Chapter 5 The return

“Douzo,”

Naomi had returned with some fresh drinks and snacks. “I hope I’m not boring you with my story,” she apologized to Chikyu. “At the end of the story you will understand why I told you this.” She took a sip of her drink before she sunk back in the couch to continue the story.

“Ok, I just told you how the youkai arose from the negative energy. Now not all the spirits chose to take a body and some just roamed around causing a lot of despair among humans. You have to understand that both the spirits as the youkai had a bad will. They had felt left alone by the spirits and they wanted to get back on the spirits for that. That’s why they started to challenge the humans and fight them for ground, food and dominance. A fight ensued between the two parties. It wasn’t a nice time to live I can tell you that much.” Naomi laughed. “After a long time of fighting most had forgotten what the battle started. This resulted in youkai attacking themselves as well as humans. At the side of the humans the same thing happened. It was everyone for itself, you couldn’t trust your own neighbour for he might be after you land or wife.

The world fell into chaos.

After some time the Kishinki came across Earth again. They decided to have a look at their most extensive creation. They where struck by horror of what they found there. The earth was polluted, the air was heavy with smoke and the smell of blood and the waters where thick and dirty. Seeing the fight among men and youkai and the result of this, they felt guilty for abandoning the planet. In order to fix things they tried to talk to both parties proposing them to stop fighting for the planet wouldn’t be able to take it much longer. In return the Kishinki would do what was necessary to restore the balance of the planet. The humans remembered how it once was and saw what their battle had done to their home. They where full of regret and accepted the offer of the Kishinki.

The youkai however hadn’t forgotten the neglect of the Kishinki and refused. Instead they tried to attack the Kishinki but to no result. The Kishinki tried to convince them one more time, promising that the youkai would be taken care of and had an equal share in nature.

It was no use, the youkai, blinded by their hate, refused the help of the Kishinki and kept on rampaging. The Kishinki where now faced with a dilemma. They couldn’t leave the earth and the animals and people to themselves after they had promised their help. But they felt guilty towards the youkai after learning their history, and where reluctant to take action against them. They told the youkai to leave the humans and animals alone for they had nothing to do with the neglect the Kishinki had given them. After saying that they decided to wait and see what would happen.

As promised the humans stopped fighting, instead dedicated themselves to the recovery of the Earth. The Kishinki saw this and had good hope for the live of the planet. But soon this hope got shattered. The youkai hadn’t given up and they didn’t allow the humans to return to their normal lives. They kept attacking the humans and destroyed every thing they build.

They humans, far outnumbered and not strong enough to fight back, had no chance against those furious demons.

That’s when the Kishinki decided to take action against the destruction of the Earth. In order to be able to fight the youkai and help the humans they took on a human body. This allowed them to go unnoticed in times they wanted to but it also gave them the ability to fight. But even though they looked alike normal humans they where considerably stronger. Their strength, stamina and durability where greater then any human possessed, but they weren’t as strong in abilities as the youkai where. Still they had one great advantage against the youkai. Each of the five human Kishinki was able to use the element it was responsible for at free will. Slowly these new masters of the elements where able to win from the youkai and peace returned to the planet.

But when the Kishinki took a human form they also chained themselves to the circle of live on Earth. Their lifespan was still a lot longer then that of a normal human but eventually, they too, would die.

Afraid that the youkai would take advantage of their dead and started fighting again, they divided the land in five different regions. Each of the regions was governed by one of the Kishinki. This way every part of the land was being looked after and the youkai had no chance of attacking an unmonitored part of the land.

The influence of the five Kishinki on their appointed regions was clear to see. In the north the earth region had a lot of mountains, forests, flower fields and cultivatable lands. Everywhere you look you would see plant, trees and flowers, causing the land to look beautiful and have a wide variety of colours. The people living in this region lived mainly off agriculture.

In the fire region, a little south west of the earth region, the air was more dry and the temperature was warmer. On the outer edge of the land there where giant mountains and volcano’s which gave off huge clouds of smoke. Here the people where bigger and rougher then in the other regions, they where very capable fighters and didn’t mind doing heavy labour. Most of them made their living as black smiths creating tools for agriculture, weapons and armours for battle and other tools used for living. They traded these things with the other regions in order to get a wider variety in food, clothing and other things they could need.

South east of the fire region, in the energy regions lived kind but very energetic people. Being very curious and expressive they made a living from science and arts. The most brilliant men and woman lived there exploring live and everything surrounding that. On the other hand you had the artist who’s creations in clothing, literature, poetry and inventing couldn’t possibly be equalled. Because of their energetic nature they where also very good in sports, especially running was one of their great talents.

Next to the energy region, east from the energy region, lay the water region. The land consisted mostly of water and the people here lived mostly of fishing. Seeing their region had both warm weather in the north and low temperatures in the south the where very good at adapting. Their greatest skill was building various types of boats. Small boats to cross river, larger ones to fish with, boats for long journeys, fast boats or boats able for war just name it and they could build it.

North of the water region and east of the earth region, lay the wind region. Open fields with not much plants or trees this was the domain where the wind could roam freely. The people here where nomads, living in tribes and travelling to every corner of their region. They made their living by trading between the different regions thus providing every region with wanted materials.”

Naomi sighed.

“Because the Kishinki now where mortal they decided to live as normal people do and started families. This ensured the existence of an element master as the children would inherit the Kishinki’s ability to control the elements. Every eldest child was trained in using their power. Besides that they also received training in fighting and had lessons about the earth and it’s inhabitants. This way the successors where able to rule wisely and fair with the ability to protect his or her region from harm.

For a couple of ages this went well and all was calm. But in the shadows of the land the youkai had seen an opportunity to gather and grow stronger. One black day they attacked the humans with combined powers. The strongest of youkai was their leader, his name was Daima. He was though, fierce and ruthless, no-one was able to stop him.

The Kishinki, although they died long ago and passed on their knowledge and power, where still in their spirit form around. When they had died they casted a spell on themselves. This way they where able to sense danger. If this happened the original Kishinki spirits would reincarnate into their family again. This gave them a body and enabled a return to earth. Because of this they had sensed danger years before Daima arose. Being born and trained, they grew old enough to fight Daima a year after the youkai had appeared. Because the new protectors of Earth where the original Kishinki the where also considerable stronger then their ancestors. The fight between the youkai and the humans lead by the Kishinki was long and fierce. Neither seemed to be able to get the upper hand, the youkai had gotten a lot stronger but the humans where prepared this time. And because most people of the regions had learned to, to some extend, manipulate the elements as well they where able to stand up against the youkai.

Eventually they reached the end of the fight. The five Kishinki stood against Daima to take him down. Both parties we\'re almost evenly matched and the Kishinki had to acknowledge that they weren’t able to kill Daima. They decided to combine their powers in an ultimate attempt to seal the youkai. To do this it meant giving up their lives and powers so the combined power of this could seal the youkai. The only thing that remained after their sacrifice was the pure essence of the elements. On that they placed the same spell as they placed on themselves before. Meaning that the essences would recognise it if their seal on Daima began to fade, so they could once again return to the humans.”

It staid quiet for a couple of minutes as Naomi finished her story.

"So what happened after that?" Chikyu was the first to break the silence. Naomi looked at her and shook her head. “I don’t know.”

"But if you don’t know what is the point of telling this story?” Chikyu asked

“All I know is that after Daima was sealed apparently peace returned. But things never returned to how they where before the youkai appeared in this world.” Naomi sighed,

"This world!?" Chikyu was shocked by this.

"Yes this world, the story I just told you is the story of the beginning of time. Everything I just

told you has really happened."

Chikyu got angry, “This is impossible. Nothing like that can be real. I mean come on people being able to use water? Get real!” She stood up and was about to walk to the door. She really couldn’t be in the same house as these weird people any more.

“Chikyu matte please.” Something in Naomi’s voice made her turn around. “Taiyõ, could you please light the candle on the chimney?” Taiyõ stood up from his chair and was about to walk to the chimney when his mothers voice made him stop. “Not that way Taiyõ, you know what I mean.” The look on Taiyõ’s face spelled storm, but he did as his mother asked anyway. Without a blink he snapped his fingers.

At the same time he snapped his fingers, the candle, at the other side of the room ignited. Chikyu looked at it in shock. “Masaka, “ she whispered.

“What I told you is real I swear. I know this because I am a direct descendent from the fire house. Most people forgot about this and sought their believes in other religions. They are wrong.” Naomi looked pained. “I believe that the seal of Daima is weakening. Taiyõ possesses the ability to use and control fire as he wishes. He has been able to do that since he was a child. And I believe you might be the wielder of the element earth. It explains why the youkai where after you, it explains your dreams and that is also why they plant you touched began to bloom even if it was nearly dead.”

Chikyu didn’t know what to say as she looked down on her hands. She thought back on the time when she hang on the collapsed rooftop. “But why haven’t I felt like this before? Why only now?” she asked the woman.

“Because you never needed it before. When you where on that roof it was the only thing you could do to prevent to fall and I think your subconscious reacted on that.” Naomi explained.

“But it still doesn’t explain the green light I saw when the youkai attacked me.” Chikyu thought out loud. “That’s right but I can tell you the reason of that as well. My family has always kept a close eye on the other direct descending from the Kishinki. I already told you that your family has lived in a shrine for centuries. That is because at one point in history one of your ancestors married with either a monk or a priestess. Back in the years right after the sealing of Daima people where still able to manipulate the elements. Because of the sacrifice the ability to control the elements was no longer inherited. But before that when there was peace some people got infected by the free, pure energy that flowed over the lands. Monks and priestess where most known for this. And they used their spiritual power to honour the Kishinki. The result of a spiritual person marrying an descendent of the Kishinki results in you having both the power of earth and spirit.”

During this explanation Chikyu had walked back to the couch and sat down again. “There is just one more thing I don’t understand,” she told Naomi. “Why do Taiyõ and I have these abilities if Daima has been sealed?”

“Because I fear that this seal is weakened.” Naomi expressed her concern. “The youkai you meet outside are the prove of this. They haven’t been here for ages but something has awoken them. And I’m afraid that is because of Daima’s great power reaching through his seal.” The look on the woman’s face was sad and concerned. “Taiyõ will teach you how to fight so you can defend yourself and he will train with you so you can train on using your powers. Now please excuse me but I got to start cooking.” Naomi stood up gathered the glasses and started walking towards the kitchen.

“M-Mate!” Taiyõ’s voice was angry. “I have to train her?”

“Yes you are the only one who can do so. Now be nice for once and bring her home, I don’t think it’s safe to let her go home alone.”

With that Naomi disappeared leaving a stunned Taiyõ and Chikyu.
