CHAPTER 5:
“It’s nice to meet you Michelle,” spoke Kiyoshi, “And I just want to say that everything will work out in the end, I’m sure.”
Michelle was unsure if she trusted Kiyoshi. He seemed a little too friendly. He never stopped smiling upon her, and it made her feel nervous. She started to panic as he reached out for her suitcase. “That must be heavy,” he said, “I can carry it to the car, if you’d like?” Michelle, however, pulled her suitcase closer to her, making Kiyoshi back his hand away. “Or not,” Kiyoshi speaks; now he looking like the nervous one, “Well is that your only suitcase, then?” Michelle nods. She stays quiet. “Okay,” Kiyoshi turns to look behind him, “Well then why don’t we head back for my place? Follow me.”
--
While following Kiyoshi out to his car, Michelle walked without speaking one word. She held her suitcase in front of her, almost struggling with the handle. It was rather heavy, but she did not want this cousin of hers to hold her belongings. It would make Michelle feel uncomfortable if that were to happen.
Once they had exited the airport, it seemed to take forever to walk to Kiyoshi’s car. However, soon Michelle spotted a tiny blue car sitting far off on its own. It looked lonesome, but Michelle discovered it to be her cousin’s.
Kiyoshi had removed a small remote from his pocket. Placing it to his lips, Kiyoshi whispered, “Car unlock,” and the little car’s doors unlocked automatically.
After opening the passenger side, Kiyoshi smiles over at Michelle. “Would you like to set your suitcase in the back?”
Michelle almost didn’t hear Kiyoshi; too distracted by the presence of the cute car’s doors unlocking. She glanced up at Kiyoshi, then back down at her suitcase. She gave a small nod, following with a, “Okay.”
Nodding his own head, Kiyoshi unlocks the back trunk. He passes by Michelle, and opens the back trunk wide. He watches as Michelle sets her suitcase inside the bare trunk. Once her fingers are out of harm’s way, Kiyoshi slams the trunk shut. Michelle almost leaps at this, but she holds her ground.
“Alright,” Kiyoshi smiles back at Michelle, “Let’s go.”
Michelle helps herself into the passenger side of the car. The car was very clean on the inside, and Michelle couldn’t help but ponder about the tiny rose air freshener dangling from the car’s rearview mirror hanging between the two car seats. It did make the car smell a tad flowery. Michelle honestly enjoyed the smell. However, Michelle also pondered as to why a man would have a rose freshener: maybe a scented pine or some citrus fruit, but a rose?
Michelle thought back on what Chief Dagwood had told her. Her Aunt Alice, Kiyoshi’s mother, had loved roses. Perhaps that was the cause. Soon Michelle did not care. As soon as Kiyoshi started up the car and hovered it off the ground, Michelle leaned back to watch the rose air freshener rock back and forth from the movement of the car. It was peaceful, and pleasant. Michelle enjoyed watching it, and Kiyoshi noticed this.
--
As he looks her over, Kiyoshi still could hardly believe that this young girl was his cousin. She didn’t even look like him; however, she did have those exact same sparkling blue eyes.
When he chatted over the phone with this Chief Dagwood, he never expected the news he had heard.
--
“Officer Endo speaking,” Kiyoshi had answered, “Who’s this?”
“Officer Endo,” Chief Dagwood spoke slowly, “I am Officer Dagwood, Chief of the American patrol officers in Connecticut. I have some news that might just interest you.”
Kiyoshi held the phone closer to his ear, confused as to why an American officer would contact him. “Yes Officer Dagwood, what is it?”
“Well to begin with,” Chief Dagwood said, “I’d like to start by saying Sir Wakehiko had been a great friend of mine, and I’m sorry to hear of his death.”
This made Kiyoshi’s ears perk. This man had known Sir Wakehiko; the Sir Wakehiko. Kiyoshi trembled just at the remembrance of his old friend. “T—thank you,” Kiyoshi answered, “We all miss him.”
“Yes,” Chief Dagwood then sighs, “But sadly that is not why I have called you, Officer Endo.” Chief Dagwood paused for a moment. Kiyoshi began to worry the man had lost connection, but soon his gruffly voice was heard again, “Officer Endo, your first name is Kiyoshi, correct?”
“Why yes,” Kiyoshi’s eyes widened, “But how did you…?”
“It’s a very long story,” Chief Dagwood said, “But I am glad I have reached out to you. I do not know if you know or not, Officer Endo, but you have a family member here who’s in need of some help.”
At the mentioning of a family member, Kiyoshi nearly drops the phone he held so tightly. He began to tremble, and placed the phone closer to his ear. “I—I’ m sorry, but you must be mistaking. I don’t have any family. I—I grew up in an orphanage and…”
“Your mother,” Chief Dagwood interrupts, “Her name was Alice, correct?”
“I,” Kiyoshi felt about ready to have a heart attack, “How in the world did you know that?”
“About 20 years ago she was murdered, along with your father,” Chief Dagwood speaks fast, “Am I not mistaken?”
“Yes, I mean,” Kiyoshi felt his face growing hot, “How—why are you…?”
“I’m terribly sorry Officer Endo,” Chief Dagwood says, though he did not sound sorry at all, “But when we here discovered she was murdered, we tried to get her sister, Dawn, to take you in. She refused to.”
Kiyoshi leans back in the seat he sat in. He had an aunt! She could’ve taken him in, but she refused to do so. This was too much! “I—“
“Officer Endo,” Chief Dagwood continued, “Earlier this day your aunt was in a terrible car accident. Her husband had died tragically, and now she’s in a coma.”
Kiyoshi began to sweat. How could this be? “Why—why did you call to tell me this?”
“Because Officer Endo,” Chief Dagwood’s voice grew soft, “Your mother has a daughter, age seventeen, without a home. I was hoping Kiyoshi that she could stay with you.”
Now this was too much to handle. Kiyoshi couldn’t even think; he didn’t know what to think. His mind was racing. He not only had an aunt, but now a cousin?
“I know this is a lot to take in,” Chief Dagwood spoke up, “But Michelle is alone now, and you’re the only one I knew to call.”
“O—of course,” Kiyoshi rubs his forehead, “This is just—almost unbelievable. She’s seventeen?”
“That’s right,” Chief Dagwood answers.
“Oh,” Kiyoshi could feel his throat drying, “I—I guess it’d be okay. I mean, it sounds exciting. I just can’t believe this…”
“It’s hard to take in, I know,” Chief Dagwood spoke sounding happy, “But I’m glad to hear you will accept her, even though your own aunt shut you down.”
Kiyoshi was shocked by how rude Chief Dagwood sounded. Kiyoshi was unsure if Chief Dagwood meant to sound this way, but it still hurt Kiyoshi. “Y—yeah, I’m fine with it. I should be able to meet my cousin.”
--
Kiyoshi still felt weird about the whole thing, but now, as he glances over at the shaking Michelle, he somehow felt as if he had made the correct choice.
--
Soon the two were floating down, and parking beside a tall apartment building painted over in black.
Michelle stared in awe at how tall the building was. This was where she’d be living for a while. There was no turning back now.
Sitting on her seat, Michelle went to let herself out, but Kiyoshi was already there holding the door open for her. He kept that smile on his face. Michelle felt herself blushing as she lifted herself off the seat and out into the fresh air. Darkness covered the city, but reading her watch Michelle saw that it was almost 5:30 in America, meaning daytime will come soon here in Japan.
“I’ll get your suitcase,” Kiyoshi spoke, “Wait one second.” Kiyoshi grabbed the purple suitcase before Michelle could protest. She suddenly didn’t feel like lugging it into the building. She only followed behind her cousin slowly as they entered through the wide doors.
Entering the peaceful apartment, Michelle quickly followed Kiyoshi to an opening elevator. They stepped in once the groggy old man stepped out. Kiyoshi pressed a white button, and the elevator doors soon closed.
As they went up, up, up, the enclosed room stayed silent. Michelle leaned against the back wall, and kept her eyes on Kiyoshi’s back. He never once turned to look at her. She wondered if he understood her feeling homesick.
Michelle ignored the thought as soon as the elevator door slowly opened. Michelle looked on at a brown and peach colored hallway. She followed Kiyoshi down the hall a little ways, and soon Kiyoshi came to a brown door.
Setting down Michelle’s suitcase, Kiyoshi removed a tiny white card from his jean pocket and moved it through the door’s slot. The door spoke, “Welcome home, Kiyoshi” before opening wide. Kiyoshi re-picked up Michelle’s suitcase and motioned her in.
Michelle entered first, and was shocked to see just how clean the apartment was. When she thought of men, she always assumed to find a messy apartment covered in food leftovers, dirty clothes, and naughty magazines. Her cousin’s apartment was spotless and not one naughty magazine in sight.
“Make yourself at home,” Kiyoshi set Michelle’s suitcase down, “I’ll be back in just a moment.”
As Kiyoshi vanished into another room, Michelle let her eyes to journey the room. Sitting in the middle was a small television set, and in front of that was a torn blue couch. Though the couch was torn, it looked rather comfortable at that time, so Michelle decided to have a seat in it. It was, in deed, comfortable. Glancing around, Michelle examined that the aroma of the room seemed more American then Japanese. She had noticed Kiyoshi didn’t remove his shoes as they walked through the front door. She heard that was a Japanese tradition, and was the polite thing to do, but Kiyoshi didn’t even bother removing his shoes, and never told her to remove hers.
She knew that even though he appeared Japanese, Kiyoshi did have American in him, as well. She noticed that his blue eyes were almost identical to her own; practically they were identical. Michelle only hoped that she would fit in with her cousin.
Turning her head, Michelle watched her cousin reappear from the other room. He was dressed differently. Once wearing a plain t-shirt with jeans, he now stood before her in uniform. The uniform was black. It consisted of a white button-up shirt underneath a black jacket which read OOP on the side and underneath that was Kiyoshi’s name in print. Next to that was a badge, indicating he was a very important officer. Below the belt he wore black uniform pants, and black shoes. He looked very classy in uniform.
“Are you a patrol officer?”
“Well yeah,” Kiyoshi answered with a giggle, “But I’m different then Chief Dagwood. I’m not a Chief.”
“Oh,” Michelle fell silent.
Kiyoshi comes up next to her, and takes a seat, “I’ll have to be going to work soon, and my partner should be arriving anytime now to pick me up. You may do whatever you like here. I don’t know if you’d feel comfortable walking the city. It can be pretty wild out there. Um, but I do have a lot of movies, and some video games here. I also have a lot of books.”
“Okay,” Michelle whispered, “Thanks.”
“Here, I’ll show you your room,” Kiyoshi stands to his feet. He waits as Michelle grabs her suitcase, then he leads her around a dark corner. Michelle noticed a tiny bathroom with a toilet and bathtub to her left. On the right was her room.
Michelle almost loved the room. It seemed very cozy. It contained a small bed, dresser, a closet, a large lamp, and even a tiny radio.
“I left room for your stuff,” Kiyoshi giggles, “I was expecting you’d bring some small furniture or something, but I guessed wrong on that one. Anyway, this room is yours; do whatever you’d like with it. I want you to feel right at home.”
Setting her suitcase on the bed, Michelle only nods at Kiyoshi. He smiles back at her, and is about to speak more when a ringing could be heard from the main living room. “Oh that must be Tanako.” Kiyoshi chuckles at Michelle’s confused expression, “My partner. Would you care to meet her, Michelle?”
