Chapter 5

5.

The air was hot and staid. Typical of a day in the middle of summer. Someone was blasting Pac from an open window high above the street. It was too hot to work. I’d been sweeping the front of the shop, sweating like a pig. Garcia took pity on me and gave me a box of popsicles, told me to give them to my boys and have the afternoon off.

We chilled in front of the store on the curve. Someone had opened a fire hydrant, water sprayed all over the street. Kids scampered in and out of the pulsing water, laughing and playing. It looked like fun. Once the music started, it became an impromptu block party. Dickey and Ray-ray sat on the curve, listening to Dickey’s brother tell them all the reasons they weren’t as cool as he was.

He was a good guy, knew it too, and like any big brother, he teased Dickey constantly, bullied him, and always tied to out do him. It was always in good fun though. True to any good big brother’s nature, he was the only one allowed to pick on Dickey.

“I tell you this works. You can get anybody if you just do what I’m telling you.”

They were all sixteen; a microstep from being seventeen, the only thing on their minds was hooking up. Dickey and Ray-Ray, like two knuckleheads, Edwin thought, were listening to Tony like this was the God’s honest truth.

“Yeah right.” Edwin sucked his teeth. “You’re telling me you can get anybody using these corny –ass lines? Your stuff is whack, son. Absolutely whack.”

Of course, Dickey and Ray-ray were looking at his like he’s grown another head. Whatever, sometimes he believed he was the only one with common sense.

Tony cocked his brow and piled on the cockiness as he took the final bite off his Popsicle, then tossed the stick in a nearby can, and clucked his tongue in Edwin’s direction. “Alright, I’ll show you. The next hot person that comes around that corner is going to stare into my eyes and full into my arms.”

“What? Your breath’s going to kill them?” Edwin teased. “You’re on.”

So, they sat on the curve, waiting for Ms. or Mr. Hotness to emerge. Kids raced up and down the street on bikes, while others splashed around in the water.

“Gaby. Tito. Come on. Mama wants you home.” The girl’s voice, though her body was unseen, gave every indication of hotness. It seemed she was coming their way.

Tony smirked at Edwin, feeling confident that once again he’d show his brother and his friends that he was the master. Two small kids scampered across the street, drenched from their time under the fire hydrant’s spray and absolutely happy, because of it. On the sidewalk, a girl and boy waited. The older set wrapped the younger set in towels and began to walk their way.

As the pair approached, Edwin began to pray intensely that Tony stuck to macking on the girl. If the older boy and girl weren’t twins, he’d be surprised, because they looked very similar, save for their respective gender differences.

The pair stopped as Tony began to work his magic. All the while, Edwin continued to stare at the other boy, who pretended to ignore him. This was the cheesy moment in every chick flick where the hero fell so deeply in love, he was tumbling ass over head because of it.

Edwin was brought out of his silent reverie as the pretty boy’s sister started to argue with Tony. Apparently, she didn’t want to be Tony’s baby. Dickey and Ray-Ray laughed their asses off as Tony argued with a girl who already seemed like the jealous girlfriend he’d never wanted.

Pretty boy caught him staring this time. He did look away this time when their eyes met. Edwin continued to stare across the street deliberately avoiding the feeling of eyes on his back. A new shadow overtook his own. Edwin turned around to find Pretty Boy standing behind him, looking so beautifully annoyed.

“So, are you going to make the first move or not?”

Edwin smiled, shaking his head. “Nah.”

This confused Pretty Boy, whose face now oscillated between angry and hurt. “Why not?” Pretty Boy pouted.

“Because I don’t have to.”
