Tiptoe Through the Tulips
When Rachel pulled up in the driveway, she noticed a small, white, beaten up punch buggy. Rachel softly opened the kitchen door. She could hear a ukulele being played that was followed by an extraordinarily high falsetto voice singing "Tiptoe through the Tulips".
Rachel knew that voice belonged to either one of her Tiny Tim records or Renee's eighteen year old Tiny Tim impersonating boyfriend Carter. Rachel loved Tiny Tim but disliked Carter despite his Tiny Tim impersonating abilities. Carter could have easily passed as Tiny Tim's son. Rachel listened quietly by the living room door. Carter ended his little serenade.
"I'm so glad Rachel's not home." Renee said.
"Speaking of Miss Rachel, I don't think she's that fond of me." Carter said.
"How do you figure?" Renee asked.
"She's threatened to break my ukulele and she gives me dirty looks. To be honest, she scares me." Carter said.
"I thought you weren't afraid of her?" Renee asked.
"I've got a good right to be scared of her. She's almost the same height as me; she owns a rifle and a machete and she knows a lot of people." Carter said. Renee was quiet for several seconds.
"Carter, I think you should leave." Renee said.
"What?! Leave?! Why?!" Carter questioned.
"Rachel might be home any minute." Renee said. Rachel could detect the doubt in Renee's voice.
Rachel quietly slipped out the kitchen door again. She rested against the hood of Carter's car. She decided to put her dislike for Carter aside. Carter came outside. He jumped and turned pale upon seeing Rachel.
"What do you want, Miss Rachel?" He asked meekly as he slowly walked down the steps.
"Just a word. Not more or nothing less. There's no need to worry; I don't have my rifle or my machete and none of my friends are around." Rachel said as she patted the bare spot on hood of the car.
"Did you hear my conversation with Renee?" Carter asked.
"Yes. But that isn't the point." Rachel told him.
"What would you like to talk about, Miss Rachel?" Carter asked as he warily joined her.
"Renee." Rachel said.
"I've not done anything to your sister, I swear!" Carter exclaimed.
"I know, I know. I'm only talking to you about Renee because I know you love her as much as I do." Rachel said.
"Is she in trouble?" Carter asked.
"If she doesn't get these silly ideas out of her head, she could get into some serious trouble. You see, she wants to start running or making 'shine with Jam, RoRo and me. I can't have her doing this. It's bad enough I do it. I don't want her getting hurt. I've tried talking to her about it earlier and she got mad. So... I figure she'll listen to the guy she loves." Rachel said.
"You want me to talk to her?" Carter asked.
"Yes... Right now, you're my only hope." Rachel told him.
"I'm glad you're trusting me with something like this." Carter said.
"So, you'll do it?" Rachel asked with a slight smirk.
"Of course. Like you said, I love Renee as much as you do." Carter said. Rachel smiled softly and extended her hand. Carter smiled and took her hand. Carter pulled Rachel into an embrace.
"Thanks for finally accepting me, Miss Rachel." Carter said as he pulled away.
"Anytime, Carter. I figure since I've never asked you to call me 'Miss' Rachel and I've finally acknowledged you as family you can call me Rae." Rachel told him.
"Thank you." Carter wiped tears from his eyes.
