Chapter 5
Mark comes in the morning, and I’m very happy to see him. Right when he drives into the driveway I run out of the house, and I give him a big hug. I tell him that I messed him and that I haven’t made very many new friends. I tell him, “I’m sorry, but I think it’s really stupic that I have to go into the war. After you hung up, I tried to call you back, but you had already left.”
“Fae, I know you think it’s stupid, but you have to go. Lets get you stuff. We need to get going.”
I say all my good byes to Dana and her familly. Then we leave for the airport.
When we get there, we meet 4 other men in some type of uniforms. “Fae, give your luggage to them, but keep the other bad with the things you need. Meet me at the checkin counter.” Mark walks away.
I hand my bags to the men, and they walk the other direction. Then, I meet Mark. “Those men are taking your stuff back home for you.” We check in, and then go to the gate.
We have to wait for 2 ½ hours. While we are waiting, I call everyone back home. “Hey Katie! Oh my God you’ll never believe where I am right now.”
“The dead sea?”
“No silly! I’m at the airport.”
“Are you coming home?”
“No I’m going to the war. I’ve been drafted by the US army.”
“Oh my god! Why?”
“I’m not sure. That’s a really good question.”
“Well good luck. I’ve got to get to class. Call me when you can. Love ya!”
“Love ya to. Send my love to everyone!”
“I will, bye!”
“Bye!” I hang up . Another hour to go. I decide to get some lunch.
When I get back from lunch, it is time to board the plane. Also, there are only male soldiers in it. They all look at me, and I became very uncomfortable.
Mark introduces me to them, and they introduce themselves to me. I sit next to a guy named Stephen Dame. He is wearing a green army uniform. He is tall, and looks very strong. He is 24 years old, and one year older than me. He is also from the US.
“Are you from Israel?” He asks me.
“No, I’m from the US. I’ve been living in Israel for about a year.”
“That’s, cool, I wish I knew Hebrew, do you know Hebrew?”
“Yes,” I answer, “if you want, I can teach you.”
“That would be great!” I had also brought my guitar with me. I learned how to play while I was in Israel, and I’m pretty good at it.
“ I see you can play guitar, are you any good?” he asks me.
“Ya, I’m pretty good. Can you play?”
“Ya, kinda. Maybe we can play together sometime.”
“Sure. That would be nice.” ‘Wow, I’ve made my first friend in the war!’ I look out the window, and see everything go by under me. My school, Dana’s house, and many other things. As the plane got higher, the houses got smaller and smaller. I fell asleep.
About an hour later we are half way there. Stephen is reading a book. There is some movie playing, but it’s not in english. “Hey Fae.”
“Yes?”
“Why were you in Isreal? You said you were from the US.”
“Well my parents died about a year ago.” I look over at Mark, he’s asleep. “That’s my brother, but he is a polieceman, and has a weird shift, so he couldn’t take care of me. I knew someone in Israel, and I stayed with her.”
“Wow I’m sorry. Is there anything I can do?”
“No, it’s ok. Don’t worry about it.” I took out the notebook Dana had given me to write my thoughts in and about everything that happens. So I write about Stephen and the plane ride.
We are almost there, and I find out that we are going to Czechoslovakia.
I sleep for the rest of the flight.
