College Orientation, Part One

The Perfect

5. College Orientation, Part One

It was a Tuesday night. Both Talan and Lucas were working at their cashiering job that evening. Talan was on the lane right behind Lucas. There were three other cashiers. Talan walked up to Lucas.

“Hey,” he said. “How’s it going?”

“Oh same ol’ same ol’,” Lucas grinned. “What about you? How you doin’?”

“Pretty good,” Talan said. “I have orientation tomorrow.”

“How long is it?” Lucas asked.

“Three days,” Talan said. “Three days and two nights. I have to stay in the dorms and stuff.”

“So I can’t come see you at all?” Lucas asked.

“No,” Talan said. “But you can text or call. I may not answer right away though.”

“Okay,” Lucas said. “But can we hang out when you get back?”

“I’m not leaving town,” Talan laughed. “I’m just gunna be fully loaded with orientation stuff. It will just seem like I’m far away. But yes we can hang out when I get home.”

“Good,” Lucas said.

“Talan,” Les the manager yelled. “It’s eight. Go home.”

“Okay,” Talan said shutting the light off from his lane. “Bye Lucas.”

“I’ll miss you babe,” Lucas whispered.

Talan winked while walking away.

***
It was noon the next day. Talan had his mother drop him off at the college. He chose not to drive so he couldn’t leave and see anyone he knows. He wanted to pretend that he was already in college for the next three days.

With his duffle bag he walked up to the building.

“Cool,” he said to himself.

He felt like he was in a completely different town. He lived in the same town his college was in and also worked at the college. But for the next three days, he was not in his home town. He was just in college.

“Hey Talan,” his friend from high school said approaching him.

“Hey Sarah,” Talan said. “I didn’t know you had orientation today.”

“Yeah,” Sarah said. “I’ve been looking forward to it all week.”

“Me too,” Talan said.

“I’ve already signed in,” Sarah said. “So I’m gunna go to my room okay?”

“Sure,” Talan said. He was happy that his friend was leaving. It’s not that he didn’t like her, but he wanted to make new friends.

Talan went and signed in. He got a bag full of information and a key to his dorm room for the next few days. He was in room 254, a room on the second floor of the dorm. He made his way down the hallway to the staircase and headed up the stairs. His room was close to the entrance to the hall. He unlocked the door and entered the room.

As he walked in he noticed that his roommate was already there. His stuff was on the bed furthest from the window. Talan put his stuff on the other bed.

“Hey,” his roommate said. “Name’s Jason.”

“I’m Talan,” Talan said extending his hand. They shook.

“Where you from?” Jason asked.

“I’m from here,” Talan replied. “You?”

“A-Town,” Jason smiled.

“Nice,” Talan said.

Jason was a little taller than Talan. He was just as skinny as Talan was too. He had short, light brown hair spiked in all directions.

***
Later on in the day Talan was put into a group of about 20. His roommate Jason was in his group along with other people he’d never seen before.

“Alright my people,” his orientation leader Alex said. “Here it is. Y’all are in my group. Obviously. Anyways, let’s get started. My name is Alex and you guys are stuck with me for the next three days. So anyways. We are gunna go ahead and learn each other’s names and make some new friends.”

The kids shuffled and found a person to partner up with.

“Hi I’m Talan,” Talan said.

“My name’s Rachel,” his partner said.

Rachel was shorter than Talan with long, black hair and brown eyes.

“So where are you staying next year?” She asked.

“In Hadley Hall,” Talan said.

“No way,” Rachel smiled. “So am I.”

“That’s so cool,” Talan laughed. “We can hang out a lot then.”

“That’d be awesome,” Rachel said moving her eyes up and down Talan.

Talan met her gaze when her eye’s returned to his. For a second they just stared at each other.

“Hey,” Alex said interrupting, “Am I interrupting anything here? Pay attention. We going to lunch now. That cool with you guys?”

“Yeah,” they said simultaneously.

“Good,” Alex said motioning for the group to follow. “Let’s go then!”

The group of kids followed their leader to another area on the campus.

It was later the first night. Talan had gotten together Rachel and was hanging out with her in his dorm room. She was laying on his bed and he was sitting on the chair for the desk next to his bed. His roommate wasn’t there.

“So are you so excited for college now?” Rachel asked.

“Hell yeah I am,” Talan said. “I made a few new friends today. You of course.”

“Oh yeah,” Rachel said. “So you hooked up or anything?”

“Yeah,” Talan said not realizing he wasn’t telling people that.

“Really?” Rachel said, “With who?”

“Well I suppose it doesn’t really matter if you know,” Talan said. “I’m dating a guy from my work.”

“So you’re gay then?” Rachel asked.

“No,” Talan said. “Bi. I’ve never dated a guy before him though.”

“What’s his name?” Rachel asked, “He’s pretty lucky to have a good looking guy like you for a boyfriend.”

“Yeah,” Talan said. “I wish I wasn’t hooked up right now though.”

“Why’s that?” Rachel asked.

“Because,” Talan continued. “Then I could have random hookups here at orientation without feeling guilty.”

“You don’t have to feel guilty,” Rachel said. “If it’s only a hookup then it really means nothing.”

She moved closer to him. Her mouth was nearly touching his.

“Yeah,” Talan said. “But I never wanted to be the guy who cheated.”

“If you cheat,” Rachel said. “It just means that you’re not in love. And if you’re not in love, then you are fine to like other people. Even if you’ve only known them for a few hours.”

“Are you gunna kiss me?” Talan said.

Rachel moved her lips to Talan’s. It was a very short kiss.

“Wow,” Talan said. “I’ve never kissed someone after only knowing them for a few hours.”

“Neither have I,” Rachel grinned. “But when it feels right.”

“Even if it’s wrong?” Talan said, “Even when I’m not available.”

“What happens at college stays at college,” Rachel smiled. “And since we are going to college together. We can keep it here.”

“Or I can tell,” Jason said walking in the room. “What are we keeping at college?”

“That we just kissed,” Talan said.

“We’re keeping it from his boyfriend,” Rachel said.

“Boyfriend?” Jason asked, “Well that’s okay. I won’t tell anyone.”

“Good,” Talan breathed a sigh of relief.

“You like keeping it a secret or something?” Jason asked sitting on his bed.

“Yeah,” Talan said. “We just don’t wanna be like made fun of or beaten up or something like that.”

“Besides,” Jason said. “If you get to keep that a secret, I don’t see why you can’t keep what you do with other people here a secret to.”

“Oh look at the time,” Rachel said sitting up. “I’d really better get back to my room so I can get some sleep.”

“I’ll walk you,” Talan said getting up.

He followed her out the door. They walked across the landing to the other hall and went in. They stopped at Rachel’s door.

“Well it was nice meeting you today,” Rachel said.

“Likewise,” Talan replied. “I’ll see you tomorrow right?”

Rachel smiled and kissed him on the cheek. She opened her door and went in.

***
Back in Talan’s dorm room was Jason. He had plugged his headphones into his ears and was listening to his mp3 player.

“Hey,” Talan said walking in.

“Hey,” Jason said pulling the headphones out of his ears. “How was your walk?”

“Across the landing?” Talan laughed, “It was fine.”

“So you’re bi huh?” Jason asked.

“Yeah,” Talan said. “This is weird because I don’t tell anyone, and now I’m telling people I just met.”

“Don’t sweat it,” Jason said. “If it makes you feel any better, I’m fully into guys and not into girls at all.”

“Really?” Talan asked as he sat down on his bed.

“For sure,” Jason said.

“I don’t believe you,” Talan smirked.

“Don’t you?” Jason asked. “And how may I prove to you that I am gay?”

“You tell me,” Talan smiled.

“Okay,” Jason said getting up. He ran his hand over the side of Talan’s face and planted his lips on his. “How was that?”

“Okay,” Talan said. “This is weird. I’ve never gotten two people I barely know to kiss me.”

“You must not party a lot,” Jason laughed. “Does that prove it to you?”

“Yeah,” Talan said.

“We could do more you know,” Jason said. “No attachment of course. Just random hooking up.”

“I really shouldn’t do too much passed kissing,” Talan said. “I think I’d feel too bad.”

“Well hey,” Jason smiled. “You can kiss Rachel during the day and me at night when no one else is here.”

Talan’s phone started vibrating. He picked it up. Lucas’ name flashed on the screen.

“It’s Lucas,” Talan said.

“That your boyfriend?” Jason asked.

Talan nodded.

“You should probably answer it then,” Jason said.

Talan pushed the end button.

“Nah,” Talan laughed. “This weekend is about being far away from my life. So I’m not accepting calls from anyone I usually talk to.”

“So as far as anyone is concerned,” Jason said. “You don’t even have a boyfriend. You are single from now till Wednesday night.”

“You know what?” Talan said, “I am single. While I am here I get to leave my old life and be a ‘college’ student for a few days. So I am totally and completely available.”

TO BE CONTINUED…

A/N: So this is a look at how Talan is when away. There will be more to come in Part Two and Three of College Orientation. Poor Lucas has no idea… But hey, people make mistakes. Realistically, Talan might cheat on Lucas and Lucas could even cheat on Talan. Now it might not be as realistic as a boy and a girl at orientation but hey… why not?
