Chris began to find himself sleeping with Matt most of the time. Some nights he would go in to say good night and wind up there at Matt’s request, while other nights he would be asleep in his own bed and wake up in Matt’s. It seemed to go in a cycle that went unnoticed to Chris, but Matt saw it right away and at first, he thought that it was because Chris was feeling unsure or maybe a bit afraid, wondering if his dad somehow gets out and comes after him. But after a while of thinking it over he realized that Chris was too smart for that. He knew too well that his dad was put away for a long while so he thought about it some more but when he couldn’t think of anything, he gave up and soon tried to find a way to make him comfortable with living there and living away from all that violence. Moreover, he wanted to just do something nice for Chris. So he thought about taking him on a trip. Nowhere far, just to the coast and back, but he thought it would be nice. So as soon as it was decided and official that Chris was living there, Matt brought it up to him.

“Why a trip?” Chris was finishing a plate of pizza as Matt suggested it.

“To just…do something nice…to have fun!” Matt took the empty pizza box and tossed it in the trash, picking plates up along the way. “It’s supposed to be sunny on the coast this weekend. We should go!”

“You sure? So soon after all that happened?” Chris asked.

“Yes I’m sure!” Matt set the dishes in the sink with a clatter and turned around. Chris looked up at him and could see the bruises left on his face from the encounter. They had gone down in the last few weeks, but still made him wince slightly inside whenever he saw them. “Do you want to go?”

Chris thought and couldn’t recall a time when his dad (or his mother, before she left) had taken him anywhere. Of course he wouldn’t take me, he was too busy getting hammered to worry about taking his bastard child anywhere. Matt had noticed his sudden silence and came up behind him and wrapped his arms around him. The touch seemed to electrify his skin. “We don’t have to go…I just thought…”

“No, I think it’s a good idea. We should go…” Matt’s breath tickled his neck and ears.

“We have a three day weekend, why not leave tomorrow morning?” He playfully bit at his ear and Chris flinched, sliding his hands up Matt’s arms in response.

Chris nodded and closed his eyes as Matt moved down to his neck with his kisses and held onto him tighter. Chris was about to say something, something on the edge of his tongue and tried to suppress it, but it came out as a whisper, barely audible even to Chris. “Matt, what are you doing to me?”

He stopped and let go of Chris. “Let’s go get packed. We’re gonna want to leave early tomorrow.” Matt pat him on the shoulder and left for his room.

Chris watched him go and touched the place Matt had been kissing on his neck, remembering all the places where he was touched, kissed, held, caressed by him. He could feel the weight of them all on his entire body. All he cold do was tip his head back and repeat to the empty kitchen, “What are you doing to me?”

Eventually he packed up too and the next morning they set off. They traveled west through the mountains and came out in a beautiful bay dotted with beaches and beach houses along the cliffs until it hit the docks of town. Out the window, Chris could see tourists hiking in the sand alongside residents, so close they all looked the same.

“Want to head down there first?” Matt had noticed him looking and took it as he wanted to go down. “We don’t have to check in the hotel right away.”

“Sure…” Matt pulled over into the beach parking and Chris reached back for his duffel bag but Matt stopped him.

“We’re just going walking. We don’t need swimsuits,” Matt smiled as he saw Chris’ cheeks redden slightly and they both got out. They took their shoes off and stepped onto the sand. Chris stood on it, thinking of how it reminded him of standing on pea gravel in elementary school. Just softer and finer. They set off slowly, talking and kicking sand at each other. The tide started coming in and Matt began rolling the cuffs of his jeans up. He tried to get Chris to as well but he refused.

“I’ll just walk on the edge of-hey!” Matt had started rolling his pants up for him. Chris sighed and finished it for him, smiling. “Fine…”

In a strange way, this was healing to Chris, like everything else that had to do with Matt. It all seemed to make him feel relieved, feel like he was home in a way that he never felt before. They walked and didn’t know how long it was that they had been walking. People soon seemed like nothing to them, The mix of tourists and residents seemed like moving shadows that dropped in numbers as the sun moved across the sky. Chris never seemed to find peace, never seemed to feel this way at any time in his life. Not even when he left the house and took his long walks, but now here on the beach, just standing still he did. They came across a grotto where Matt stole a quick kiss from him as the water sloshed around their ankles. Chris didn’t mind, only turned and kept going. He was letting a lot slide by with him. Just being near him was so relaxing and letting Matt do what he wanted was a way to thank him. Not out of an obligatory, but just a thankful feeling. On the other side of the grotto, they could see the sunset in full colors of reds and orange bouncing off the water and clouds. They admired it a minute, when Chris threw his shoes on a rock and went to the water, wading in carefully up to his knees, right below his rolled up pant cuffs. He stood, watching the colors dance off the water then turning, he saw the cliffs glowing from the colors and Matt’s white shirt a bright orange-red as he waded in after. He caught up with him and they admired it another moment. Matt looked down at him and could see that Chris was wrapped up in the sunset. Unable to contain himself, Matt splashed Chris a bit and got him to smile. Not caring about his clothes anymore, Chris splashed back and forth with him and they laughed and smiled real smiles. Never before had Chris smiled an authentic smile or laughed till his sides hurt like he was doing now. They had always been fake. Like the way he had perceived the people around him as. Matt was bringing out sides of him he never knew existed and only now, was he realizing this.

After one particularly big splash Matt grabbed Chris from behind and spun him around, swinging his feet in and out of the water, soaking them both. They stopped and faced the direction of the sun and watched it finish its display of colors. In solitude they watched it. No houses dotting the cliffs, no one hiking along behind on the sand, just them. Matt held him close while Chris leaned against him. There was no lust, no craving, just a silent moment they shared as waves crashed, gulls cried, and Matt whispered in Chris‘ ear, telling him he loved him. Near the end of their silent embrace as the cold of the water seeped into their numb feet and the last of the sun’s warmth was fading, they kissed under the stars and hiked back to the car. Nothing was mentioned about what went on past the grotto, but they talked like they had on the beach about nothing in particular.

They got a double bed at a motel eight and once they were inside, Matt told him to warm up in the shower so he wouldn’t catch cold. He did and when he came back out in a cotton robe, he saw Matt watching TV at the end of his bed. Chris sat next to him and toweled his hair a minute before setting it aside and watching the news with him. Not much interested him and he leaned his head on Matt’s shoulder, running his fingers on his arm. Matt’s body seemed to stiffen but Chris didn’t notice and only stared at the TV as his fingers danced along Matt’s arm. Soon, he found himself on his back with Matt on top of him.

Matt was breathing heavily and Chris felt his body shiver at the look in his eyes. It was the look of lust and wanting. The whole afternoon had been perfect, perfect enough that any little thing Chris did could set Matt off and he could feel himself teetering again. He leaned in, his breath gently washing across Chris’ cheeks as he whispered, “Be careful what you start Chris.”

He looked up at Matt, his eyes wide with surprise. His body was tense, but as soon as Matt kissed him, it relaxed, like his muscles were melting like butter. Holding him in return, he could feel them both getting warmer with each movement, each time a tongue entered the other’s mouth. Matt slid his hand between Chris’ legs and a quiet moan slipped from the teenager’s mouth, bringing Matt’s attention to what he was exactly doing. He stared at Chris a moment then pulled away from him. “Not yet. We can’t just yet.” He kept a straight face but his voice wavered. Matt headed for the bathroom, muttering, “I’m going to go cool off. You should go to sleep.”

Chris sat up and listened to him start the shower. Shaking a bit, he looked down and wrapped his arms around himself to stop. A sudden realization seemed to wash over him as he found himself wishing that Matt hadn’t suddenly gotten off, that Matt had continued kissing him and caressing him in the way he had been. I don’t think I would have minded this time. I wouldn’t have cared if he wanted more from me… He made his way over to his bed and laid down in the bathrobe facing away from Matt’s bed. He could fee tears start in his eyes, but he stopped them. He didn’t want to cry over this. Chris was asleep by the time Matt got out. Toweling his hair, he looked at Chris on his bed and covered him with a blanket before crawling in his own bed and turning out the light.

They stayed until Sunday, enjoying the sun and beach and the little markets and gift shops. One of them, in which, Chris found a selection of shell necklaces. Nothing much, but a little shell on black braided string, but it was the note on each tag that caught his attention. They came in a set of two, the shell on each broken in half from the same one so they fit perfectly when placed together and the tag attached to each read: Share yourself with someone, and give a piece of yourself. Hold the piece they give you in here, and they will always be near, close to your heart.

“Whatcha lookin’ at?” Matt asked in a teasing kid’s slang as eh came up next to him.

“Some necklaces,” He turned the tag over. “Personal treasure necklaces.”

“I’ve heard of these,” Matt pulled one off and looked at the shells. HE read the note and laughed. “One of my friends got one once. He never took it off and it got so worn it fell off.”

Chris smiled too and said, “The note’s corny.”

“Yeah, but its sweet.”

He nodded. “Very sweet.”

Matt watched hi fondle it a minute then asked, “Do you want it?”

Chris dropped it suddenly and waved it off, “Oh no no! You’ve already gotten me something on top of taking me here. I’m fine.”

He left the necklaces and continued on a rack of hemp bracelets. Going at it slow, he watched Matt out of the corner of his eye go to the counter to pay for something. Am I silly, for thinking a necklace like that could mean something? Out of the window of the store, he saw a coffee shop with a neon sign flashing its name.

“Hey Matt! Let’s go get a coffee!” He ran up to him and tugged him outside as he finished getting his change. They got some iced mochas and sat in a place near the window. They talked and got refills when needed. Chris was enjoying himself, and it was then that he began to wonder how Matt felt around him, how he felt when they talked. And it soon became not just what, but why. Why did he choose me? Why no one else? Why didn’t he do this to anyone else?

Chris stirred his straw a moment as Matt was finishing up a sentence. “Matt…”

“Hmmm?” He sipped his drink then set it aside.

“Why…ah, do you,” Chris stuttered. He couldn’t ask him, it was too straight forward.

“Go ahead Chris, ask me.” Matt watched him squirm in his seat, looking away in different places. He grabbed Chris’ hand and held it across the table. “It’s okay. Whatever you need to ask or say, just say it. It’s better to not keep things bottled up.”

Chris looked at the hand that held his own. A soft hand, one that has seen little hard work, comforting hands. “Why, why are you only looking at me?” He moved his hand around in Matt’s. “I’m sixteen, still in high school. And I wa-I’m, not that way. Why someone like me?”

Matt sighed. “I wondered that myself at first. I don’t know what came over me the night you came over. I normally wouldn’t do that with a student, but I found out later that it was in fact something that wasn’t physical. I found that the more I was around you, the more I came to love you.” Matt laced their fingers together and squeezed gently before taking it back to reach down below the table. “Close your eyes Chris.”

“Why?” He eyed him suspiciously and Matt laughed.

“Just do it.” He was still fumbling around a bit in a bag under the table. “I promise it won’t be a kiss or anything like that.”

He closed his eyes and heard a slight tapping of something fragile sounding. A paper ripped and something was put over his head and around his neck along with something that was placed in his hand.

“Okay, open them.” Chris did and looked first at the thing in his hand. A necklace lay in his palm. A half of a shell on the black braided rope, and when he reached up and touched the one that was placed around his neck he found that he was wearing a twin of the one laying in his palm. He looked up at Matt and Matt smiled at him. “You looked like you wanted one.”

“But this is…” He stopped mid sentence and looked at the one in his hand again.

“I’m giving you something that I won’t ever take back. Even if you get rid of the necklace, you will still have it.” Matt looked down at Chris’ hand and closed it around the second necklace before looking back up at Chris, the smile still on his face. “You have a piece of me now, and when you’re ready, you can give me a piece of you. I don’t care how long it takes, or if it never happens. As long as I’m near you, knowing you’re the one who has that piece of me, I don’t mind if you never return it.”

Chris pulled his closed fist back and looked away from Matt. He pulled his drink to himself and took some sips, using an obvious distraction that Matt caught onto right away. His eyes wandered to the window at passersby and thought a moment longer before muttering. “You’re corny as that tag, y’know that?”

Matt chuckled and shrugged. “So I’m corny, but I’m sweet?”

Chris didn’t answer this one, but drank the rest of his coffee. They left the coffee shop and as they made their way back to prepare for everything real and familiar, Chris couldn’t help but feel that they had both left something behind. Something that stood with them in the few weeks that went by and their lives in the past. How many times have they interrupted when we are just righting things from chaos? Chris thought as they crossed the city limits. Those troublesome traits of doubt and fear…

Alright, I'm sure that some of you sex lovers are bored by now with the story, but whatever...unless I'm in the mood to do a one-shot, then I dont really write straight out sex scenes XD

Anywho, hope you liked the bonding with Matt and Chris. I try and make the chapters a sizable amount, not too long since I write long paragraphs sometimes, but long enough to keep you entertained for a while. ^^
