Chapter Five
I turned slowly and looked at the tall, blue eyed Egyptian as he stood by the door. His lean body easily distracted the eye, but I knew what lay behind that calm exterior of Andreas Quinlan.
Andreas was the eldest vampyre known to exist. His sister had been the person the demon spirit had possessed. She had been the first vampyre and turned his entire family. It was common knowledge, as was the fact that he was the only one left of his family.
He was the only Egyptian I knew with blue eyes, but they were eyes I hated to see on my body. His eyes moved over my body as if he was hungry and I was the perfect meal. It was sexual, but at the same time, I was just meat to him.
“What do you want, Andreas? Need some other people to torture with your presence.” I could feel Cassi tense behind me as I spoke, knowing that she couldn’t show any form of hatred or aggression toward Andreas, as he was technically the father of her species. He was half the father of my species, but no one was my master.
“Ah, Alexia, you were always so … sassy. And you wonder why I make time to find you. You have always been such a tease.” He took a step into the room and Cassi took a step back. Andreas scared me, but I had been raised knowing that vampyres were easy to kill. Cassi, on the other hand, was taught to fear those more powerful that you are, and to show it.
With her step back, Andreas stopped and smiled, flashing fangs. “Now, Cassiopeia, darling, you know that I am here for Alexia, not you. You may leave.”
It was a command and we all knew it. I glanced at Cassi, begging her to stay, but her eyes apologized as she nodded and grabbed her bag. “Yes, Andreas. I will talk to you later, Alexia, about, um, Friday.” She grabbed my hand and gave it a squeeze before making her way to the door.
As she came even with Andreas, I knew what was about to happen. His hand went out super fast and caught her arm, causing her to squeal. This seemed to excite him, but I wasn’t going to let Cassi suffer at his hands, not when I could stop it.
I was then that I realized I had pulled my gun. I raised it even with him and smiled. “Now, Andreas, I would let her go if I were you. I may not have a warrant for your death, but the DIT would forgive me for killing the one vampyre that has made their lives so complicated.” My smile widened as I sighted his head. “And we all know I would love to pull this trigger.”
His eyes went a solid blue as his power filled the room. It was never a good idea to make a four thousand year old master vampyre mad, but there was no way that I was going to him do anything to anyone if I could stop it, especially not my best friend.
We stood that way for a whole minute, my gun trained on his face and his power swirling around me, raising my hair around my body. He was the first to break, releasing Cassi and speaking in low tones. “Leave, Cassiopeia. Now!”
Cassi glanced at me but left before Andreas could change his mind. I lowered my gun as soon as she was clear of the room, but pulled up my witch powers to match his vampyre powers. “What the hell was that all about, Andreas? What the fuck is your deal?”
His eyes returned to normal as he stared at me, but I could still feel his power around me. “You should know me well enough by now, Alexia, to know that I was merely testing the young vampyre. And my deal, as you say, is to have you as my own.”
Shit. Back to this again. Would he ever give up? I sighed and pulled my power back into myself and shook my head. “Come on, Andreas. I’ve told you more time than I can count that it’s not going to happen. Not now, not tomorrow, and not in a million years. I’m sorry for anything I may have said to make you think otherwise.” I glanced at my watch and sighed. “I have to go to check in with my boss and partners.”
I walked toward the door, but didn’t make it far when he grabbed me around the shoulders and shoved me against a wall. His knee went between my legs and his hands had mine above my head, effectively pinning me.
His lips were above mine as he spoke and I knew what was coming next. “I will have you, whether you like it or not. I have always gotten my way, and that will not change with you.”
His lips met mine and his tongue pried my lips open. He was larger than me, and therefore stronger than me, but I had one thing that he couldn’t take from me. My girlish charm, and a significant amount of witch magic.
I panicked with his tongue in my mouth but got an idea. Hoping it would work, I returned the kiss he was giving me, meeting his tongue with my own. I met fangs and nicked myself on them, letting my blood fill both our mouths.
I put some witch magic into my blood and he jumped back spitting my blood all over the floor. I laughed and wiped the blood off my chin. “What’s wrong, Andreas? Can’t handle a little witch blood?”
He looked up at me with hatred in his eyes, continuing to spit the blood out of his mouth. “You bitch! You know that vampyres can’t take witch blood. I’ll kill you for that!”
He moved to lunge at me and I pulled my gun, sending a shot just by his ear. Moving the barrel to point back at his head. “Leave, Andreas. Leave now before I lose my cool and just shoot you.”
He stared at me for a few seconds, but apparently what he saw didn’t please him any. He nodded and backed toward the door. He stopped just before walking out and looked at me. “I will have you, Alexia, whether you want it, or not.”
With that cryptic remark, he turned and disappeared out the door, leaving me alone in the empty dance hall. I lowered the gun and sat in the chair, shaking. I hated that man more than I could admit, but he had a way of getting under my skin like no man could. Was this a sign? A sign that I was meant to be with a man I despised?
I shook my head, clearing the horrible images of life with that man out of my head. I stood and walked briskly through the door and down the stairs, heading to my Wrangler parked in the back parking lot. I had to get back to Glamour Hunts and pray that Mike wouldn’t ask too many questions about my tardiness.
