Chapter 5
Was it just me, or did Cole look a little embarrassed after that little silent conversation he had with his sister?
God . . . Would it be rude to ask what they were talking about?
The next thing I knew, Chase blinked a few times, looking over at me then to Cole and back at Allison. He made one movement with his hand, then said, “really?”
Allison beamed at Chase, nodding her head. Cole turned blood red, scooting back from the table.
I just set there, my mouth hanging open. I know I looked like a fish out of water.
Since when can my brother sign!?
“Excuse me,” Cole said, giving Allison a pointed look, as if to say ‘keep your mouth shut,’ or rather, ‘keep your hands still.’
He swiftly walked out of the kitchen, and I can only assume by the sound of a door closing, into the bathroom.
“What in the heck was that about?” I asked, looking at Chase, then to Allison. Allison looked at Chase and shook her head, a pleading look in her eyes.
Chase seemed to understand whatever it was she was trying to say and nodded his head.
“I don’t know,” Chase said, spooning some oatmeal into his mouth.
I sighed. Little brats . . . It’s good they are so cute . . . But that’s the only thing they got going for them at the moment. Gah . . . I hate being left out. And . . . so clueless . . .
“Fine, can you at least tell me when you learned how to sign?” I asked, a bit childishly.
“Silly, you can’t learn to sign in one and a half days. I only know a few words Ally showed me when we were playing . . . ”
“And it happened she signed one of the words she taught you just now?”
Chase nodded, going back to eat. It was plain to see that was all he was going to say, too.
Moments later, a normal looking Cole walked back into the kitchen. He gave everyone a sheepish look, rubbing the back of his head. “Sorry, I just had to go really bad.” He set back down, silently starting to eat again.
Chase giggled, “when you have to go, you have to go.”
Allison nodded, ‘more so when you are a boy,’ she mouthed, but only I saw her doing that as both Cole and Chase were focused on their meals.
She does have a point. Could that really be it? But, then, why would Cole’s face have been so red? It truly seemed as if he was reacting to the realization that Chase understood what Allison had signed.
Mm . . . This is going to have me frustrated for some time, until I find out what’s really the matter.
---
“Bye, mom! Bye dad!” Chase and I called together, giving our mom and dad hugs and kisses. The van was packed and they were all set for leaving for the airport that would take them to Japan.
“See you, Mr. And Mrs. Turner,” Cole politely said. Allison waved, a cute smile on her face. Once again she was attached to Cole’s legs, not used to my parents as she’d gotten used to Chase and me somewhat; us four playing together for hours until it was time for my parents to leave. She’d quickly warmed up to me and Chase, which I was happy about.
But even with all this time . . . I still don’t know what truly went on in the kitchen. Allison and Cole hasn’t signed to each other once since then, almost as if they are afraid I will pick up on some of the signs.
That’s it! I’m getting one of those sign language for dummies books.
And maybe one of those children sign language teaching videos!
“Kyle,” My mom said, rolling her brown eyes. The eyes I got from her! Curse me with the boring brown eyes gene . . .
“What?” I asked, jumping out of my thoughts.
My father chuckled.
“Behave,” My mom said, making me blush.
“Don’t do anything I wouldn’t,” My dad added, making my blush rise tenfold.
They know I’m gay, yes, but even so, I know they didn’t mean to make those words sound as perverted as they did. Honestly, behave . . . don’t do anything I wouldn’t . . . Gah . . . The thoughts those words put into my head are pretty . . . Heh . . . interesting to say the least.
“I won’t,” I said, playing off my flushed state by making a show of fanning my shirt. Boy is it hot out today.
From behind me, I could swear I heard Cole chuckling.
---
Its my first night alone with Cole. And well, Allison . . .
I can’t believe it . . . he . . . he . . . he’s actually sleeping my MY bed. MY BED! Want to know why!!?? Huh, do you!?
Because that blessed cot broke. Haha . . . can you believe my luck!? We’d got it all set out and as soon as he set on it . . . it bloody broke!
Cole looked at me, a tangled mess of sheets and limps. He had the biggest surprised look on his face. The next thing he said made me giggle.
“Well damn . . . guess I’m fat.”
Ha! Ha! Him . . . him fat! No no no no! He’s anything but fat. I could go on days describing how muscled and tall and lean and just bloody hot he is. He’s every gay man’s freaking wet dream. Heh . . . I should know.
“Guess you have no choice now,” I said, thankfully looking quite unaffected by the idea of us sharing the bed.
Cole gave a shrug, “guess not.” He stood up and walked to the edge of my bed, sitting down next to me.
I swear my heart was beating a mile a minute . . . as fast as a humming bird, I tell you.
And now . . . here we are . . . on the same bed.
He’s asleep, breathing evenly. How can someone’s breathing sound so cute?
Soothed by the sounds of his rythmic breathing, I soon felt my eyes closing.
---
Huh? Blinking my eyes, I set up, rubbing them. What’s that noise?
I looked next to me, seeing that Cole was missing from the bed, frowning a bit.
Where’d he go? And just what . . .
Oh, I know now. The sound I’m hearing is singing . . . singing?
Did Chase turn on his radio?
Getting out of bed, I padded to the door, following the sound. And sure enough it led to Chase’s room.
I blinked, peeking in. I swear at that moment my heart completely melted.
Sitting on Chase’s bed was Cole, both Allison and Chase in his arms, as he sung a low lullaby to them, rocking them to sleep.
Silently I crept into the room, walking to the side of Chase’s bed.
“Cole?” I whispered.
Cole turned baby blue eyes on me and gave me a soft smile. He glanced at the two in his arms, seeing they were asleep.
“What are you doing?” I asked, quietly.
“Allison came to your room. I’d woken up, hearing her walking in. She told me Chase was awake, crying because he’d had a nightmare. You looked so peaceful, so I didn’t dare wake you.”
Cole smiled, “so I came in here. They sure fell asleep quite quick . . . ” He murmured, brushing hair out of Allison’s aqua eyes.
That . . . that’s so sweet! I didn’t know he had such a soft heart like that!
God . . . Would it be rude to ask what they were talking about?
The next thing I knew, Chase blinked a few times, looking over at me then to Cole and back at Allison. He made one movement with his hand, then said, “really?”
