Chapter 5

Beatrice was exhausted by the time they finally reached home. Her arms were sore from carrying their groceries and her calves hurt from walking. Crowley, on the other hand, was in good shape and hadn’t even broke into a sweat, even though he was wearing his heavy black coat. It was around 2:00 in the afternoon and they made themselves a meal of ham sandwiches with chips. Beatrice finished eating and then flopped down onto the mattress, preparing for a nice nap.

“Uh…I know you’re tired and everythin, but we got one more errand to do today,” Crowley said, kicking the side of the mattress.

Beatrice groaned and burrowed deeper into her sleeping bag. Just let me sleep!

“Leave me alone. You’re a big boy; you can do your errands by yourself!”

“Goddammit, woman! I don’t have to let ya stay here, ya know! So get off your ass right now and come with me!” Crowley said, raising his voice for the first time.

Hearing the usually calm man lose his cool slightly excited Beatrice but at the same time scared her. She reluctantly got up, pulling on a sweater, pretending not to notice his intense gaze.

“Alright, fiancée. Lead the way,” she muttered.

The neighbourhood was empty and silent, just as it had been when Beatrice first arrived. The only difference was that Crowley was by her side and it wasn’t hailing cats and dogs. Having the strange man by her side made her feel safe, in some twisted way.

They were walking down the cobblestone street past seemingly abandoned houses, but Beatrice knew better. As she walked by she thought she could feel eyes watching them and she shivered. She wanted to hold onto Crowley’s hand.

Oh, Justin darling! I’m scared.

Beatrice thought she heard the scuffling of feet and she looked back, her heart pounding erratically in her chest.

“What- what was that?” Beatrice whispered, moving closer to Crowley.

“We’re not alone,” Crowley replied, keeping his eyes straight ahead.

Crowley suddenly grabbed her arm and led her to an alleyway behind an old boarded up shop.

“Stay here,” he said, and walked farther down the darkened alley, leaving Beatrice alone.

She watched his back disappear into the darkness and felt something tighten inside her. What if he was really leaving her here, all by herself? Suddenly the image of her bloody, naked body being carried off popped into her mind. She began to tremble, just now noticing the cold draft that was blowing from ahead. Just when she about to disregard Crowley’s command and run for her life, he appeared again. She had never been so happy to see anyone in her whole life as she was now.

Took him long enough!

He silently motioned for her to follow him. She followed him into the darkness, wondering where the hell they were going. The dark scared her. It had ever since then.

Seven Years Ago

He removed the pillow from her face, still panting, and pulled out of her.

“Bea, look at me,” he said hoarsely, grabbing her chin.

Beatrice fixed her eyes upon him and he choked up.

“Adrianna?” he gasped, backing away from her.

Beatrice pulled her underwear up and got out of the bed.

“No, sorry. I’m still your daughter, no matter how many times you try and pretend,” she said coldly.

“I told you not to talk back to me, girl,” he snarled after he had wakened from his nostalgia, drunk and violent, he backhanded her for her lip.

She fell back across the bed, her face stinging and her lip bleeding. Just as he turned his back to leave she grabbed her bedside lamp and swung it at his head.

If she hadn’t missed, maybe her whole life would have turned out differently. But she did miss, and he gave her a beating she would never forget.
