chapter five

Alys looked into her eyes and she stared back. “Mother is that you?” In her shock she forgot that she was to avoid everyone. “Is it really you?”

“Alys?” After all these years she still remembered her daughters. Imagining what they would look like if they lived. “Why do you still haunt me?

“Haunt you?” then she remembered why she was here. ‘She thinks I am a ghost,’ Alys looked her mother in the eye. “Why did you wait so long to bring us to the furnace?”

“Because it was so hard for me to decide who to depart with. Then the Divine One found out and ordered that I must choose. I decided so that you would be together with the goddess if I let both of you go. I never had another child, I became barren.” Her mother looked her in the eye. “Where is Emily?” Alys remained silent. “Tell her I miss her.” Alys tried to remain calm.

“I will. But I need a favor. The Goddess has sent me to find the one you call the ‘Divine One’ But he is not to know I am here.” Her mother nodded to her. “Where is he?”

“Follow the main street. Fastest way there.”

“Thank you… mother.” Alys held the sand runner close to her and faced the street. “The Sands are unforgiving to the crimes it sees the ‘Divine One’ has committed. The Runner will be the deliverer of the price for the sins he passes off as laws.” She covered her face again and rode quickly through the streets toward the home of the ‘Divine One’.” She didn’t look back at her mother. She would not tell her sister that she had seen her.

When she arrived at the place where the ‘Divine One’ lived. She scaled the wall and looked into the window of the dining hall. She witnessed the LPO come in and bow in front of a man as fat as a good cow, full and thick.

“What is the meaning of you coming into my home? You better have a good reason!” his voice sounding fierce and angry.

“Oh, Divine One! Forgive us for the intrusion but it is about the two soldiers that were sent to burn the man who escaped into the forbidden barren lands. We found him and destroyed him.”

“Then what is the problem?”

“Well only one of the solders returned and he came with a message. It says,” the LPO swallowed hard. “The Sands are unforgiving to the crimes it sees the ‘Divine One’ has committed. The Runner will be the deliverer of the price for the sins he passes off as laws.” The LPO cowered back when he said nothing. His eyes filled with fear, and Alys smirked. She pulled out a small cloth she had and in her blood from the wound she suffered earlier from she wrote SR and placed it on the handle of her dagger. Once tying it to the handle she aimed and threw it across the room along his eyeshot. They turned to the dagger and she jumped down out of sight. She got onto the Runner and went as fast as she could to the edge of the city. She smirked then looked to the east. The predawn light showed her that she had stayed to long. Emily would be waiting for her.
