Memories are what make us...
A/N I really wanted to update earlier, but I was living without the net since this Sunday. Sometimes, it just seems that our government hates students.
Anyway, madlodger and rosiel thank you so very much for reviewing. You made my day :)
Madlodger : I don’t know what to do about the divider line – It looks ok on my monitor, and I just don’t know how or what to correct. As for Jack, well, he is not a snitch. However, things happen, so you can never be sure :)...
Chapter 5
Memories are what make us…
I am running in a mist. The atmosphere is hot and stuffy, suffocating and dizzy. Suddenly, an enormous garden appears before my eyes. Tulips and narcissuses are blooming everywhere, so it is probably spring …
---
I don’t want to go to dinner, so I am hiding at the yard - mommy was so angry at breakfast, when I broke her favorite flower vase. Besides, Aloeff will be coming today. I just hate when he starts pulling my hair! Oh, and it is so unfair that he is already ten and can go to school… Aloeff says I am too small and I’ll never be able to go to one…But I will go, even Mori says I so!
Suddenly, I hear Mori-chan’s voice calling. I can’t believe she is home already!
“Mori-chan I missed, you so much!” Sister is wearing a nice yellow dress and her hair smells really good.
“Your big heretic sis missed you too, little hellion. Were you lurking for me in the bushes?” She smiles.
I want to smile back, but I am still angry at her for leaving me, so I don’t. Yet, it is so hard to keep a serious face around Mori that I have to bite my lip. Well, I try not to give up, but she starts tickling me and making funny faces and repeating “Are you angry at me little Aleal?” “You are not angry are you?” so I capitulate and laugh and shout “No No!” “I am not angry!” until she stops…
---
“… Take your clothes off Aleal-sama.”
Daddy sounds irritated, but I won’t obey him! Not until he and mommy start looking at me again. Not until Mori comes back! And I want to go to school like all children. Mommy said I would go this September, so why hadn’t I?
“You can’t be successful in your purification, when you are clothed, my lordship. “
“I don’t care! I don’t want to be in this freezer, anyway!” I shout.
His eye is twitching and I am a little bit nervous.
“Young light of Leiloa, it seems your humble priest has somehow offended you. As it is so, He, now, will humbly take his leave. I hope a week will be enough time for your lordship to find forgiveness in your heart.” He says in a cold voice.
“No! I am so sorry, daddy. I’ll be good. Please don’t leave me alone!....”
But daddy isn’t listening anymore…
---
“Aleal, always remember that your sister loves you all way to the moon and back, and will never forget you.” There is dew in her hazel eyes and I know - though she said it was only for a while - she won’t be coming back.
“Please, Mori, don’t leave me.” I cry.
“You are a big man, who is already seven, you shouldn’t cry. It is woman’s business to shed tears” She replies.
“But…Mori…”
My independent, proud, always smiling older sister hugs me, starts to sob and begins a never-ending litany of sorry:
“I am sorry Ali…I am sorry, that you bear that stupid mark… I am sorry I was so stupid and voiced my opinion… I am sorry mother and father are such bloody fanatics…I am sorry you …”
---
What is He doing here? Recently, Aloeff is showing at father’s house more often than ever. Besides, he started looking at me strangely and it sends shivers down my spine.
“Why are you here?”
“Aren’t you happy to see your cousin, my lord?” Aloeff asks as if confused, but I hear taunt in his voice.
“Clearly, we are not happy. Shouldn’t you be studying for your exams, anyway?” – I learnt last week during my history lecture that China emperors referred to themselves in plural. That is so cool!
“You wound your humble cousin, Aleal-sama. Not only am I not held in your favour, dear Aleal, you forgot that I have already passed my exams. Oh, that is just too cruel...”
“Well then… go pass it again or… go visit some other unlucky person… I…We don’t know…”
“Oh, but Aleal-sama, how could I not visit my dear cousin on his 13th birthday? Besides, I heard you are going to hot-baths today, my precious lord. It would be a crime to miss this great event and not to join you.”
I should have known. After all, 13 is a considered to be a bad number isn’t it? At least, Jack told me so. But, what’s so great about hot-baths, anyway??? And if it is oh so great, can’t he go there on some other day?
“You can go to hot-baths any day you want. So why, now? ” – And to think that I was looking forward to the trip…
“Oh, I just feel this need burning inside me to visit hot-baths on this particular day, Aleal-sama. Besides, I heard that the baths you are visiting are famous for their tempting views…”
‘What???’
---
My left leg is burning and throbbing… and it hurts so much. Still, I am trying my best to remain silent. However, as the pain increases tenfold and I let out a loud cry. The burning intensifies too - it is now consuming my whole body. I can even see blue flames dancing all over me, radiating form me. But it lasts only a moment and suddenly azure light fades away – leaving only aching behind.
Through a dizzy haze, I see father and a bunch of servants appear on the doorway.
“Why were you screaming?” Dad sounds annoyed and disgruntled. He is wearing pajamas, so I probably woke him up.
“Something on my left thigh hurts…and there was a blue flame …. It was burning me… ” I whisper with a throaty voice, looking at his tall dark figure.
A confusion, disbelief and strange maniacal glitter appear in his eyes. At once daddy is on my bed, pulling my pajama bottoms down. He is staring at a pale crescent, which has appeared on my thigh. It seems that this moon-shaped mark is the cause of my suffering.
Dad looks stunned. His mouth is open and all of his attention is focused at the crescent.
“Daddy?” I whisper a little bit afraid and embarrassed.
Like a man awoken from his slumber, daddy looks at my face. Suddenly, his gaze turns down, his proud shoulders droop in respectful manner and emotionless “Everything will be alright young light of Leiloa” escapes his lips.
When, proud and intimidating once again, he turns to servants and commands:
“Prepare a cold bath and bring a silver circle from my office.”
I want to ask ‘daddy what is wrong with me?’ but voice is stuck in my throat. I am afraid to meet that idolatrous, maniacal, cold gaze again. I am terrified, however, that “the gaze” will refuse to meet me.
Silent, dad takes a glass with water from the nightstand and pours it on my thigh. Sparkling liquid calms the throbbing and washes the pain away. Still, I can feel a lump forming in my throat, because the hand that is holding the glass belongs to a stranger.
