Two days later…
Alex was surprised at Lukas’ endurance. They had been playing volleyball by themselves for nearly an hour and Lukas had just broken a sweat. Alex’s shirt was soaked through and his breathing was getting ragged.
“Don’t you ever get tired?”
Lukas laughed as he hit the ball back over the net.
“I used to play a wall before you showed up, walls never get tired.”
Alex dived and was lucky enough to send the ball back over.
“That doesn’t sound good for me.”
Lukas laughed as the coach blew his whistle. Their gym class was over.
“I can put the equipment up, you go ahead to the showers.”
Alex nodded in agreement and stripped off his shirt as he jogged to the locker room. Lukas smiled, his ploy worked for once. He put away the equipment and jogged back to the dorm to take a shower. It was a short one though, going from the gym to his dorm cut off a lot of his showering time before he had to go to his next class. He lathered and rinsed in five minutes before drying himself off. He wrapped a towel about his waist and walked out of the bathroom to find his clothes. He stopped cold in his tracks. Alex stood in the doorway to their dorm, his eyes fixed on Lukas’ scars all about his waist, stomach and back. Lukas clenched his jaw.
“Shut the damn door!”
Alex jumped and did as he was told, in shock from what he had seen. Lukas couldn’t take it; he never wanted Alex to see his scars. He leaned against the door and slid down to the floor, wrapping his arms about his legs as his throat tightened. He suppressed his crying to silent sobs but they must not have been silent enough.
“Luke…please let me come in. I’m sorry, I should have knocked first.”
Lukas slammed his fist into the door to silence Alex, it had the desired effect. He quickly stood and dressed himself before sitting on the edge of his bed cross-legged.
“Can I come in? We need to talk about this.”
Lukas didn’t answer but Alex turned the handle anyway and came in, closing the door softly behind him. His heavy gaze rested upon Lukas, filled with sadness and a small tinge of anger. He slowly sat on the edge of the bed next to Lukas, his left leg pulled up on the bed as he faced him.
“Who did that to you?”
Lukas didn’t answer and Alex became impatient.
“Did you hear me? I said who the fuck did that to you?”
Lukas finally looked Alex in the face, anger also in his eyes.
“A man. He’s dead now. He stole me when I was twelve.”
Alex’s eyes lit up with realization as he leaned in to talk to him low, as if someone might hear them.
“You were kidnapped?”
Lukas didn’t answer him, only stared at the floor, talking as if he was animatronic.
“He had me for three days, touched me, made me touch him.”
He didn’t even try to stop them, his voice quivering as tears rolled down his cheeks. Alex felt sick, why would someone do that to him?
“He cut me, all over my middle. He said he liked it when I screamed.”
Alex clenched his jaw, feeling his lunch climbing up his throat at Lukas’ words.
“Stop.”
Lukas acted as if he didn’t hear him.
“He only used me once, I made him angry. I told him I wanted to go home.”
A hard sob seized Lukas throat but he continued.
“So he cut off my boy parts, he castrated me in his basement, and finger fucked me as I bled all over myself.”
Alex was so shocked by his story he didn’t know what to do. Was he supposed to comfort him?
“He was supposed to kill me after, I was supposed to die in that mans basement. That’s how this story is supposed to end.”
Lukas looked up to Alex’s gaze, his eyes red rimmed from hot tears that were still spilling down his cheeks.
“He made me different Alex, he made me what I am today. Every day I breathe is another day I’m supposed to be dead.”
Alex couldn’t take his words anymore; he wanted to shut him up. He pulled Lukas to him and wrapped his arms about his shaking slender shoulders.
“I wasn’t supposed to ever meet you Alex, I wasn’t supposed to ever make you get beat up like you are. You were supposed to come here and live out your high school days peacefully, easily, maybe meet a girl that would be your wife.”
Alex squeezed him tighter to him.
“Shut up. You lived through the worst thing that could ever happen to you, there’s nothing they can do to you now that could be worse. You survived, you made it here, and you met me. It all happened okay.”
Lukas looked up to Alex’s gaze.
“And I’d smile through another twelve beatings like the one I had if that meant you would survive your encounter all over again.”
Lukas pulled away from Alex and yawned. Alex smiled at him as he looked at him, confused.
“You know I think a nap would do us some good.”
Lukas smiled and climbed back into his bed and got comfortable. Alex stood and kicked off his shoes before lying down next to him. Lukas sat up on his elbows alarmed.
“What are you doing?”
Alex pulled off his shirt and laid his head down on Lukas’ pillow.
“Taking a nap.”
Lukas blushed a whole new shade of red as he rolled over onto his side, his back facing Alex. Alex put his hands under his head as he stretched.
“Can I ask you something Lukas?”
Lukas made snoring sounds as Alex elbowed him in the back. He laughed and turned over to look at Alex.
“What?”
Alex stared at the ceiling to their room as he spoke.
“Do you like me?”
Lukas shrugged.
“I’ve never really had a friend before but, yeah you’re a good friend I like you.”
Alex nudged Lukas again as he rolled over to his side, hiding his face from the older boy.
“That’s not what I meant.”
Lukas sighed heavily, sounding tired.
“I told you I don’t like straight boys.”
Damn how much of a lie that was. Lukas was beginning to really like Alex, but he wasn’t about to tell him that. The boy was odd, sometimes he seemed straight and they were just playing around or having fun, while the next minute he’s being all sentimental and acting like he had feelings for him too. Lukas just shrugged it off as a pity attraction; he knew Alex wasn’t really gay like him. He shook off his heavy thoughts and relaxed. Sleep sounded so sweet.
**************************************************************
Three hours later…
“Ahem!”
Alex jumped awake and almost fell out of the bed as he turned to see Mr. Gordon standing in their dorm room looking not so happy. Alex’s start woke Lukas who looked equally afraid of the conversation to come; only he had a deep blush on his face.
“Lukas stay in this room and don’t you dare leave until I send for you. Alex in my office, now.”
Lukas flinched at Mr. Gordon’s tone as Alex looked to him questioningly. Lukas just beckoned him to go as Mr. Gordon stormed from their room all the way down to his office. He closed the door harder than he usually does and locked it before taking his seat.
“First, I’d like for you to explain to me why you both missed half your classes today.”
Alex winced at his tone but didn’t refuse him his request.
“Well sir, we were at gym and Luke told me to go ahead to the showers and he’d take care of the equipment. I got worried when he didn’t show up in the locker room even after I had finished showering. So I went looking for him.”
Mr. Gordon seemed as if he was softening up a bit as he told him their story, he continued, hoping he wouldn’t become angry with him again. The man was simply terrifying when he was angry.
“I knocked on our dorm room door and got no answer so I assumed he wasn’t in there but wanted to check anyway. When I opened the door he had just gotten out of the shower and had a towel on…I saw his scars. He screamed something at me, I can’t remember what, and I closed the door.”
Mr. Gordon was staring at him now, his gaze seeming distant but Alex knew the man was listening to him intently.
“I heard him crying, I knew I did something wrong and I wanted to tell him I was sorry. I waited until he dressed before I walked back in and he told me everything.”
Shock reached the older mans eyes, but only for a moment.
“Everything? The whole story?”
Alex nodded eagerly.
“Everything, his abduction, his three days…everything. He seemed really upset, I didn’t think he needed to go to class in the state he was in, but I didn’t want to leave him alone to his own devices either.”
“So you both stayed in your dorm and slept, that’s it, nothing more.”
Alex nodded again as Mr. Gordon sighed.
“Luke is a very fragile boy, his heart’s been broken by society so many times. Even by his family.”
Mr. Gordon’s gaze nearly swallowed Alex as he looked to him again, his deep brown eyes shooting a warning that was absorbed into the boy’s bones.
“I won’t see him hurt again.”
Alex smiled at Mr. Gordon, more of an evil smile than a reassuring one.
“I won’t hurt him sir, and neither will anyone else. I’m trying to help him, just like you.”
Mr. Gordon stood and stared out his window down onto his school.
“He very much cares for you Alex, I hope you know that.”
Alex nodded to him, even though he knew Mr. Gordon couldn’t see, and stood to take his leave.
“Should I send Lukas down here?”
Mr. Gordon smiled at him over his shoulder.
“That won’t be necessary, he’s already been sent for.”
Alex nodded and exited the office, taking a deep breath of relief that it had turned out so well. He walked back to his dorm, wondering if he would pass Lukas on the way but he didn’t.
*****************************************************************
Lukas walked the near empty halls to Mr. Gordon’s office. He hoped they weren’t in trouble, or worse, that they would have to be separated. Lukas remembered reading about an incident like that, a gay couple was caught having sex in their dorm room and were forced to live separately. But they didn’t do anything!
“Um…excuse me.”
Lukas blinked as he looked to find a girl walking next to him. She was surprisingly shorter than he was, with dark hair to her shoulders and wide brown eyes.
“You’re Lukas aren’t you?”
He looked around to make sure it wasn’t a trap before he answered her, she only giggled at his cautious actions.
“Yeah, I’m Lukas.”
She smiled so warmly at him he could have sworn she was the sun.
“I think you and Alex are just wonderful. I hate those people who pick on you and him all the time, who are they to say what’s wrong and what’s right.”
Lukas smiled, and laughed lightly at her.
“What’s your name again?”
She blinked and then blushed deeply as they walked.
“Oh I’m sorry, my name is Angie. You know, my dad is gay, but don’t tell anyone.”
She winked at him and giggled again. She was so cheery. Lukas looked at her, confused.
“If your dad is gay then how did you…?”
She laughed at him loudly.
“They adopted me, my dads did. You know what, my boyfriend is a jock and so are a lot of his friends. I bet I can convince them to leave you alone.”
Lukas smiled at her, she had spunk but he didn’t think she could do much good towards that.
“That’s very nice of you Angie.”
She smiled and rounded a corner.
“It was nice talking to you, see you around.”
She left him just as he came to Mr. Gordon’s office; he swallowed hard as he walked in.
“Take a seat Luke.”
He did as he was told, the older man’s tone didn’t leave room for play, Lukas could feel he was all seriousness.
“I want to hear your story, about what happened today and about what I walked in on at the dorm.”
Lukas swallowed hard as Mr. Gordon stared him down; his gaze was almost as heavy as Alex’s when he wanted information.
“I told Alex to hit the showers so I could slip away to take mine alone at the dorm. He walked in when I was in my towel and saw my scars.”
He looked into Mr. Gordon’s eyes with all seriousness, his throat threatening to close again as he spoke.
“I never wanted him to see them, I never wanted him to know I was different. But since he saw them I told him the whole story. I guess he didn’t think I should go to class so he stayed with me and we took a nap.”
Mr. Gordon stared him down from behind his desk.
“And that’s it, nothing else happened?”
Lukas nodded in agreement.
“Nothing else happened sir.”
Mr. Gordon sighed and leaned back in his chair, more relaxed now that he knew they weren’t lying to him.
“What do you think of Alex?”
Lukas blushed deeply; he knew what the man was implying. He smiled at him kindly.
“That’s what I thought. You may go Luke.”
Lukas stood to leave but was stopped again by Mr. Gordon’s voice at the door.
“Be careful Luke, affairs of the heart can be painful.”
Lukas nodded and left, walking back to his dorm room he wondered what Mr. Gordon and Alex had talked about.
