Chapter Sixteen

Chapter Sixteen

“Garret-”

Garret wouldn’t look at Rowan as he started the story. “Shh... My parents died when I was eight. It was a fire, just an accident. They got me out, but they got stuck. I inherited a lot of money but my social worker made sure it was safe until I turned eighteen. I met Elise in my second foster home. I was thirteen, she was eight. Her mother had ODed on drugs and her father had given up all his rights. Our foster father was a sick man. I didn’t know what he did to Elise before I got there but I… I stopped him.”

“Did you...?”

“Kill him? No, although, the bastard deserved that and far more. He’s paralyzed.”

“That’s not exactly a story of cuddles and puppies, but-”

“I’m nowhere near done. Obviously Elise and I moved to a different foster home. It’s amazing that they kept us together. Elise was terrified that these people would be the same so she stuck close to me. Some nights she’d sneak out of her room and go into mine. She was just a scared little girl; they however began to think that I was hurting her. I got sent out of that place within two years.”

He took a deep breath. “I went out on my own then. I lived on the street for a couple months when I was fifteen. For money and food I stole. Being what I am made both things pretty easy.

“One night I was pulled roughly to my feet...” Garret took a deep breath.

Flashback

“Jesus, you look disgusting,” a tall blond man said derisively. Garret growled half-heartedly. “When is the last time you had a shower? Or a decent meal?” The man sent a cautious glance over his shoulder. “Here, kid,” he extended his arm. “You need this far more than I do.”

Garret glared up at the man. “I don’t take blood from strangers.”

“My apologies,” he said with a bow. “My name is Liam. I can offer you a home and a steady diet.”

“What do you want?”

“Loyalty. That’s all. I’m the leader of my clan. I simply want you to join.”

“If I refuse?”

“You can. Of course, that will mean that you’ll be staying here in this alley.”

“I’ll go,” Garret agreed instantly, the thought of a warm bed and clean clothes to great a temptation. The thought of food was put in the back of his mind as the thought of a shower took precedence.

“Then drink.” Garret took the man’s arm and bit down on his wrist.

Present day

“I believe that at that moment I knew that this could be a mistake but I just wanted something I didn’t have to steal,” Garret confessed. “And I had been on the streets for so long that I didn’t care. I moved into Liam’s mansion.”

“Why didn’t you just stay with someone?” Rowan asked knowing Garret had the power to make them believe that he wasn’t even there.

“I think at the time I was just so sick of people I just didn’t want to be anywhere around them.”

Flashback

“This is Garret,” Liam announced. Garret faced the room of men and three women calmly. A simple shower and change of clothes had done miracles and increased his confidence tenfold.

“Hey,” Garret said falling easily into his old laid-back attitude.

“Garret, this is Angela,” Liam said. “She’s around your age. She’s going to help you fit in. And this is Ayden. He’ll show you the ropes. Welcome to the fold.”

Weeks went by and everything was normal. Angela was a trifle more... exotic than the girls Garret was used to but he quickly learned that all the clan’s girls were like her. He even learned to like it. Ayden for his part did teach his about life in as a Lost One. Power was valued above everything else. Liam was the leader because he was ruthless, and willing to take care of the young vampires everyone else wrote off. He took Garret under his wing seeing his affinity for mind control. It was only when the issue of killing came up that Garret balked.

“Why would we kill them?” Garret asked confused. “We can get what we need with just a few pints.”

“You’ve had sex before, right?” Liam asked as they walked down an alley, heading back to the mansion.

“Um... yeah...”

“It’s kind of like that, and the combination is supposed to be incredible.”

“I’m not into necrophilia.”

“No, you wouldn’t kill her until after. Actually I was simply talking about finding from any sexual partner. It’s the ultimate high. You should try it. Just don’t let the other person feed from you.”

“Why?”

“It’s a sign of weakness, it creates a bond. Unless the woman is your match, the woman you want to spend eternity with, I wouldn’t recommend it.”

“But you-”

“Yes, I know, however what I did was only to help you. It didn’t do anything because of the intent behind it. For me and you it was just feeding a child. If you were to give blood to Ayden if he were injured it wouldn’t do anything because of your intentions.”

“I’m confused.”

“Serene and I have such a bond, it was created through a mutual feeding.”

“But you said it’s a sign of weakness.”

Liam smiled. “I never claimed to have no weaknesses, Garret. Well it’s not too important. However, I do caution you, if you do kill, don’t do so often. Two kills by feeding too close together and you will get addicted. Besides, as you said, we don’t need to kill, most of the clan refuses to do it, and that’s fine. You need to watch who you feed from as well. As vampires we’re always being watched, you never put the rush of the hunt ahead of the welfare of the clan.”

“Hands up,” a low voice said behind Liam. The vampire merely snorted turning around. A scruffy looking man faced the duo holding a gun he leveled at them.

“Who exactly do you think you are to challenge me?” Liam asked looking at the man’s gun with pure derision.

“Just give me your money and we won’t have any trouble.”

“This, Garret, is what separates us from the...” he looked at the man disgusted, “animals like this. I cannot be harmed by that plaything they call a weapon. They, on the other hand are so delightfully weak. This man, I wouldn’t even have to touch to kill. Hell, I could have him do the job himself.”

The man dropped his gun. “W-what are you?” he stammered looking at his gun as though it had burst into flames.

“I, child, am a figment of your imagination,” he said calmly. The man walked away in a daze. “He’s going to die in five years.”

“Huh?” Garret asked picking up the gun and crushing it just by habit, he didn’t want a little kid to get a hold of it. When he looked back at Liam, the older man was looking at him with approval.

“Maybe less. He has AIDS. He doesn’t know it yet.”

“How do you know that?”

“A disease gives off a certain scent. After a while you’ll be able to distinguish between the smells.”

Present day

“We can?” Rowan asked in surprise.

“I’m not that good yet but in theory, yes,” he answered. “When you were in the hospital how did you feel?”

“Sick. There were so many smells and the people, they were off somehow.”

“See? Now, if you don’t stop interrupting I’m going to tie you up and gag you.”

“Kinky.”
