chapter 4
This was an awkward moment for Maria. She was sitting in front of this beautiful girl, with nothing to say. She took a breath. "So, what's it like?" Sara had had her head down, playing with the towel. She looked up.
"What's what like?"
"Being...a lesbian?" Sara threw the towel back to Maria and chuckled.
"It's okay, besides the fact the only girls around here are straight."
"Do my grandparents know?" Maria was relieved when Sara nodded.
"Everyone knows. Most people around here, like your grandparents and my parents, don't think it's right, but they're nice about it."
"I always took my grandparents to be the type who'd feel like running you off."
"If they are, they hide it well." Maria chewed on her bottom lip.
"Did you always know?"
"Oh, no, not at all. It hit me around puberty."
"How did your parents take it?"
"My dad was nicer about it than my mom, but they got over it. If you don't brush your hair, it's going to dry that way." Maria stretched out her legs, and laughed.
"My mom always says that. I wait for it to dry, then I spray it with detangler. I hate brushing my hair." Maria was very happy to hear Sara say,
"I'll brush it out for you. But no detangler, that's for cry-babies."
In Maria's bedroom for the summer, Sara sat on the bed, Maria sat at the end, with her legs over the side. "Now, I tug. And you aren't allowed to scream."
"No promises." Maria felt some gentle tugging on her head. She almost gasped by the pleasant surprise of Sara's face in her hair.
"Mmm, that shampoo smells good. What kind is it?"
"That cheap shit from Wal-Mart." More tugging. Then she felt Sara's face on the back of her head again.
"I'm sorry, that just smells good!" Maria quietly laughed, then turned around, and smelled Sara's hair.
"Smells like...barn dust." Maria wasn't at all surprised, but very delighted when Sara leaned in close and rested her forehead on her shoulder, and wrapped her arms around her.
"You have no idea how happy I am that someone else my own age is around here." Maria wrapped her arms around Sara, and quickly, before she could change her mind, gave her a small peck on the lips. Sara leaned away, staring Maria in the eyes.
"I was hoping I wouldn't have to be the first to do that." She smiled a huge smile, and kissed Maria hard on the lips, slipping her tongue into Maria's mouth. Maria was a bit surprised at that, but not in a bad way. She let Sara slip her tongue over hers a few times before she rubbed back. Sara wanted to place her hand into Maria's jeans, but decided not to be too forward this first time, so she left her hand on Maria's shoulder. She pulled back to say,
"I was just smelling your hair as an excuse," and winked.
