Chapter Five
Out of the Dust
Chapter Five
Sandy clutched Lacey’s hand in a death grip, the pain was so intense. It was like nothing she had ever felt before. This couldn’t be good there was no way it should hurt this much.
‘Lacey I’m going to die. I cant take it. it hurts so much. I cant do this.’
‘Yes you can honey. you have to be strong and get this little one out. I can’t say I know what you feel like I don’t but you can do it. I know you can. you have to.’
‘I can‘t.’
Lacey took Sandy’s hand and tried to reassure her but as the time was passing she felt dread seeping into her soul. It was right. She knew child birth was a painful affair without drugs but Sandy looked about ready to pass out.
I’m going to have a look see if I can see a head ok. I’m still close by .’
Lacey could seen the crown appearing it was nearly here.
‘Push on your next contraction ok? I know your tired but I can see a head it’s nearly over.’
Sandy took a deep breath as she felt the waves of contractions pulsing through her and pushed as hard as she could. she wanted it over with now. Nine months had been leading to this moment and that was long enough. Sandy pushed with all her might. She wanted to scream but even at this time of night it wasn’t safe to make that much noise so it came out as a series of grunts.
‘That’s it nearly there now. come on honey just a little more.’
Lacey could get a grip if the shoulders now and she decided she should lend a hand. On the next contraction she pulled gently on the baby to easy it out. Finally after all this time Sandy’s daughter pop out with a sharp cry. Lacey cover her in a blanket and passed her to Sandy whose arms were wide open.
‘A little girl just as beautiful as her mother!’
‘I can’t believe it. she’s here.’
Lacey returned to Sandy’s side and peered down at the bundle of joy in her arms. She was perfect in every way she had all her fingers and toes and a thick head of black hair. Although a little red from her birth she was perfect. Sandy began to cry.
‘I cant believe how little she is! This is my daughter.’
‘What are you going to call her?’
‘Rose, my mother always wanted to call me that but my dad said since I was conceived on a beach I should be called Sandy. a little piece of information I could have done without I can tell you.’
Sandy gave a small laugh and then continued to stare at Rose.
‘I love it. Rose, it suits her. A rare flower in this damaged world. I think I should take little Rose here to get cleaned up and give you a quick breather do you want me to get Laura to come and sit with you will I give Rose a wash?’
‘No I’ll be fine.’
Lacey carried Rose to the next room and washed her gently. Rose had already become board of this new world and had fallen asleep. Lacey couldn’t believe that something this beautiful could actually come from this world. Once washed and changed into a fresh blanket Lacey carried her back through to her mother. Sandy was now laying flat on the floor.
‘Here you go a nice clean baby ready to go back to her mother!’
Lacey knelt next to Sandy and made to hand Rose over to her, yet Sandy didn’t move. Her eyes were closed.
‘Sandy wake up honey. Rose will want feeding soon! Sandy……………………..Sandy?’
She wasn’t waking up. Lacey tried to balance Rose in her arms and shake Sandy at the same time.
Laura get in her quick!’
Laura came to the doorway instantly.
‘What’s wrong?’
‘Take the baby!’
Laura ran forward and clutched Rose to her chest.
‘What’s wrong?’
‘Sandy won’t wake up she was fine a second ago and now she won’t open her eyes!’
It was then that Lacey noticed to blood beginning to soak into the blanket covering Sandy’s legs. She lent over and whipped the blanket off her legs there was a huge pool of blood coming from Sandy. Lacey tried to find a pulse but she felt nothing against her fingers.
‘NNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!’
Lacey screamed and clutched her friend in her arms.
‘Is she dead?’
Laura asked. Lacey couldn’t respond she just cried over her friend. How could this have happened she had only left her for a few minutes. It couldn’t be happening. Lacey’s heart broke at that second. she had lost the only person who helped her get though in this world. she just clutched her friend to her rocking backwards and forwards.
‘What’s happened?’
Both Lacey and Laura shot round to look at the figure in the doorway. The man walked forward and looked at Rose and then down at the bloody mess that was Sandy.
‘My god I’m too late!’
