high school
The next morning, after Josh went to school I got in the car with my parents and we drove to the high school. I was very confused but I went in. We went to the office, again and there I saw Dr. Ryan with Dr. Phillips, the high school principal. They invited us to go into Dr. Phillips large personal office. Inside, everyone sat down and the adults discussed what was going to happen to me. I was going to attend some normal classes a senior was required to take, even though I didn't have to. In these classes I would have to do everything that a normal student would have to. The principal said that this was to insure that I knew everything and met all the requirements for the county. I would also have two periods of gym in the second semester so that I would get a full year of gym for the county requirements.
I was dismissed after a full hour of discussion and I went off to my first class, modern culture. This was an optional course, but I had to take it so that I would have a full schedule. I walked to my new locker first and put my lock on. Then I stuffed all the extra things in it that I didn't need. I went to room 215 and went in after knocking once. I gave the note the principal gave me for my teachers, to Mr. Teppy, and proceeded to the closest empty seat in the room. I found myself sitting on the right next to Brittany Gibbons and Josh. What a surprise. And by the way they looked at each other, I could tell they weren't on the friendliest of term. When Josh saw me he looked surprised and baffled. Before he could say anything, Britt butt in and said," Hey Alex. Finally! I thought you were like a dweeb from a different school that was like totally eww. It's such a relief that you are here. You should see all the losers that are trying out for the squad. It's like hello, if you're not like totally popular, why even try out. It's not like you'll make the squad. I just don't get losers. It‘s lik~"
At this point Josh butted in, "Alex, I know your smart and all but what are you doing here? And why are you talking to her?"
Then Britt replied to that with “Josh, I know that you want to be a football player and all, but that doesn't give you the right to like speak to any of us. And anyways, how do you know Alex? She's like new here. And totally not like you."
I interfered at this time. "Uhm... Well, Josh, uhm... I uh..., well, uh... I'll tell you later. Ok. And Britt, the loser is my brother."
Britt seemed to be hurt by this, but continued by adding, "Whatever. Alex just come to the football field after school for tryouts. I still think that you'll be great. I mean it's not like you could chose your family so, I guess it's alright for you to know that loser."
Though I wanted to know more, the bell rang and everyone left that class, and I proceeded to the last class of the day, study hall. It was another class in which Josh was also in my class.
This was getting really awkward. It’s not everyday that your big brother is in your classes. Josh pointed to the empty seat next to him and I sat in it.
“Hey Josh!”
“Hey, yourself... so what are you doing here, in my classes?” was his reply in the most serious voice I had ever heard him use.
I explained my situation to him. After what seemed to be forever, the class was over and I headed out to the football field with Josh. Josh started to freak out. The tryout results were coming out that day and he wanted to be on the team so badly. As I tried to calm him down, I also panicked. I had to try out for cheerleading! I knew I was going to blow them away, but still, this could be the defining moment of my high school popularity.
When I got to the field, Britt walked up to me, pushing Josh to the side, she said, “Hey! I thought you weren’t going to like come, and that would be like totally bad. I mean like totally. So... are you trying out?”
I nodded and she went on.
“I mean you have like no competition. I mean if you can do half the cheers then you’re in. I mean these people trying out are like geeks. Eww. Who wants to be seen with geeks? Like yeah right...”
“Ok”
I did a couple of flips and somersaults. I did a lame cheer that went on the lines of “Go team. Go. Ravens Go! We’re the best! Go!” Lame. When I did that, they told me I was in. Wow. That was easier that I thought it would have been. And like that, I was popular.
