Chapter 5

She stopped at the doorway into the kitchen seeing her mother in there preparing her fathers meal before work. She sighed remembering that the majority of her friends had both parents working. She was starting to wonder how she was so lucky that only one of her parents needed to work to support them. She smiled and grabbed her breakfast then prepared her lunch. Just before she went to go get on her shoes and coat she went over to her mom and hugged her. Her mother blinked in surprise and looked down at the girl.
“Selera is everything allright?” She asked remembering the last time Selera had hugged her before school was back when she was in grade 3.
“Yeah just thought I should hug you.” Selera said softly then turned and went to the front door. She quickly put on her runners and coat. After placing her pack on her back she ran out the door closing it behind her and raced towards school. The school was only 5 blocks from her house so easy to get to. She saw the usual groups of kids outside hanging out and talking to eachother. She even nodded to a few as she rushed inside.
Once inside the school she took a few deep breaths. She felt safe now that she wasn’t out in the open. After all none of the demons would come after her here right. She shook her head and quickly walked towards her locker. A soft smile now on her lips. She opened her locker grabbed a few items and headed towards her first class. It wasn’t far from her locker so she slipped in grabbed a seat and relaxed shutting her eyes a moment. She didn’t even notice the teacher brush past her.
“Ah, you must be miss… Lyra, correct?” A very familiar voice penetrated Selera’s thoughts. She sat up straight her eyes snapping open as she looked at the man at the teachers desk. It wasn’t her usual teacher at all. The voice that had seemed familiar though didn’t fit anyone she recognized. She blinked a couple times then nodded.
“Yes I’m Selera Lyra, is Mr. Brenton away today?” She asked softly as the figured smiled for a second seeming familiar again.
“Yes he is very sick. I am Mr. Dimir.” He said and looked up as a few more students slipped into the class. His eyes locked on Selera’s for a moment then he looked away taking some chalk and putting his name of the chalk board just as the first bell for classes went. Selera concentrated on her lessons not even noticing Mr. Dimir watching her once in awhile. Always with guarded secretive looks that none of the class caught. Throughout the class Selera could not shake the feeling that she knew this man somehow and was relieved when the bell went to end it.
The rest of her day was very easy and calm. Nothing went on and as the last bell went some of her friends came up to her grinning.
“Hey Selera want to go for a soda? We haven’t gone out together in ages.” One said and Selera sighed softly. She would love to go out with them, but was she willing to take the risk with all that was happening around her. She frowned then shrugged a moment.
“Sure a quick soda wouldn’t hurt. What have you been up to?” She asked and smiled a bit with a soft laugh.
“Okay come on.” Her one friend said grabbing Selera’s arm and running out of the school looking at her friend. They began to talk about inane stuff Selera shying away from what has been happening to her the last few days. Her friend went on and on about a date with the boy she’d been going out with for 3 weeks now and her family being pains. Selera sighed and shook her head a moment before looking at her friend.
“Sometimes I wish I had a normal family, but really I don’t. My father cares about me but lets me do many things that others won’t.” Selera said and her friend shrugged.
“Maybe it’s because you choose not to do things most teens do.” Her friend pointed out with a slight smile.
“True. I never was much for sneaking out.. or staying out late. I never really felt safe doing those things.. Even now it’s like something will come after me.” Selera admitted softly with a sigh. She knew now more than ever that her fears were actually grounded in some truth.
“Yea it’s almost like you think demons were real.” Her friend teased as they entered the shop and each ordered a drink then sat next to eachother. Selera sipped at her drink staying quiet at her friends jibe about demons. “Hey why you being quiet? You know I was joking right?”
“Yeah I’m just lost in thought. I think I’m gonna head home now. I’ll see ya tomorrow K?” Selera said causing her friend to stare at her in shock and worry but nod.
“Okay see ya then.” She said watching Selera leave the shop. Selera hurried her steps towards home. She was now ½ an hour later than normal. She sighed and became distracted. She took her usual short cut through a few alleys and did not notice the form appear behind her.
This creature had fire red eyes and spiked red hair that almost looked like spines. His body otherwise was very well toned. He seemed to be wearing a black suit with a white shirt. He watched Selera as she moved slowly three tails broke out from the back of the pants he was wearing and he sniffed the air in her direction.
“Ahh such a soft sweet scent.” The person said suddenly one tail moving to wrap about Selera’s ankle. She spun to look at the voice causing the tail to just miss it’s target. Selera stared as the figure behind her steadily became more demonic long horns growing out of his head. She glanced about then leapt just as the second tail went to wrap about her causing it to miss.
“I don’t think so.” She growled in rage reaching inside for the power she had not used since that first day. It quickly awoke and covered her in the same outfit she had had before. She looked at the demon with a smirk as the demon blinked a couple times.
“So this is how you avoid us child of light.” The demon said suddenly as a flaming sword appears in one of his hands. He smirks then shakes his head as though distracted. “That damn scent.. Your scent has been twisted.” Selera blinked in confusion but gathered a ball of energy together at her hands.
“I don’t know what you are talking about. But I won’t let you live.” She growled and released the white energy at the Demon. It barely avoided the ball then slashed at her with the flaming sword causing her to stumble back and swear softly to herself. This one wasn’t interested in her sexually like the first. This one wanted to kill her for some reason. She felt the flaming sword cut lightly into her arm and screamed in pain. The demon smirked a bit and seemed to shudder in joy.
“Oh now that was lovely. Lets do it again.” It growled as Selera leapt as far away as she could. She gathered her power again this time holding it wait. She watched as it’s sword again started to come down on her. Then suddenly she moved her hands forward allowing the ball of energy to hit the sword and use it as a conduit into the demons body. It screamed and exploded. Selera collapsed gasping then slowly stood on shakey legs. She glanced around then caused her normal outfit to appear on her before walking towards home. Her hand was on the spot where the sword had hit her. She could feel the wound and she shook her head a bit.
She quickly reached home and opened the door. Her father would be home in about a ½ hour from work. She took her shoes off at the door then glanced around a bit.
“Mom I’m home.” She called and her mother smiled in the kitchen.
“Welcome home sweetheart.” She called as Selera started to head for her room. She blinked suddenly when she saw her father sitting on the couch.
“Dad what are you doing home?” She asked surprised and quickly moved her hand from the would and making sure he couldn’t see it.
“I need to talk to you so I asked to get off early today. They said okay.” He told her then motioned to the couch. Selera shifted but slowly walked over and sat on the couch next to her father.
“What is it?” Selera asked as her father suddenly hugged her making her blink.
“Selera. When you feel it is time. Please tell me what is going on in your life.” He said causing her to blink and look at him oddly. She nodded slowly and smiled.
“Sure thing Dad.” She said and stood running up to her room. She put her pack down then shut her eyes trying to even her breathing. She was glad Merka wasn’t there as she attempted again to meditate.
