Chapter 4
"Whoa…"
John and Jessica looked around the room. The ceiling looked to be almost forty feet high, painted sky blue. The walls were of marble and looked like they had been shined constantly. The floor was of redwood, perfectly aligned in a pattern.
"What is this place John?"
"What, you're asking me?"
They walked between to tall shelves filled with books and scrolls. They were covered in dust, the only sign that this room did not just instantly create itself, but had indeed existed for possibly years.
"But how!? How is this even possible?"
Jessica smiled. "Magic…"
Another loud smash and the door behind them opened, revealing the demon from before. Both of them jumped and ran down the aisle, hoping to lose it. They reached a spilt and both went their separate ways. The demon, however, bounded after Jessica.
"Oh no! Hang on!"
John immediately turned and ran after the demon, who was gaining up to Jessica. She tried to form another barrier, but a lack of concentration made it easily broken. The demon let out a loud inhuman roar. John tried to attack it directly, but a swift turn from the demon and a claw swiping out knocked him back into a shelf, knocking down scrolls and books. One of the books opened up at his feet.
Jessica raised her hands and a white light appeared. It bound the demon by wrapping itself around it, preventing it from moving.
"John! You have to cast a spell!"
"I don't know any!"
"Use the book!"
John looked down to the book he saw before him. He skimmed through the page it had opened to, hoping to find some way to stop the demon. He looked through, until he noticed something. A strange word he felt could not pronounce, and next to it in red ink was written, fire.
"Fire…" He touched the book, and momentary felt something inside him grow. Something that felt like it was waiting to be released.
"John! Hurry up and do something! I can't hold him forever!"
John immediately snapped out of it and held the book with one hand. Then, as if he knew exactly what he had to do, raised his other hand and faced the demon.
"Fire!"
His shout seemed to vibrate off the walls, like an echo. Suddenly his hand felt very hot, as though someone was pressing a heated metal rod against it, although it didn’t burn. Then a burst of flame erupted from his hand, and shaped into a ball. The demon, weakened by the light, was struck full force. It let out another cry before disappearing into nothingness.
"John… you did it! You cast magic!"
John however, didn't seem to hear her. He looked at his hand, which was still feeling warm, although not so much as before, looking at it as though it didn't belong to him. The book dropped from his other hand as he faced Jessica.
He fell back and fainted.
"Oh no… that must have taken a lot out of him…"
She sighed at his body. She knew it was hard… but tonight showed he had some potential to be a great caster. It would be a long and difficult road, but she was determined to make it work.
Picking him up, Jessica carried him back to his bed, where he slept the rest of the night.

"Sir… the demon has been vanquished."
Once again, this demon was in the darkness of the room. And once again, he faced his superior. The room seemed much darker then usual though.
"That human… I see his magic… must have awakened."
"Perhaps the angel had-."
"Silence! Angels can't kill… not even demons. They aren't allowed. This is fortunate for us."
A light silence befell the room again. The demon faced the person there.
"Then… you wish to continue the plan, Lord Beras?"
The one called Beras faced out the window again.
"What do you think?"
"We should kill him now… just say the word."
But Beras wasn't listening. He was mumbling to himself. "Damn him, like his father…"
"Sir?"
Beras turned around. "No… we won't kill him just yet. Let us… observe a little while longer. Remember, he may still not be a Destined."
"As you command."
The demon left Beras alone. Turning he looked back out into the sky. "If only you had agreed… then your son would never have been placed into this mess. But… perhaps I can… persuade him."
Raising his palm up, a small ball of fire emerged into his hand. Piercing blue eyes, eyes that showed a cold heartless stare, gazed at the flame, as if searching for an answer hidden there.
It was not until dawn broke that he let the magic go and left the room collecting his thoughts
