Looking for a Friend
Chapter 4
Looking for a friend
As the rays of the sun creep slowly towards the entrance of the cave, casting its rays through the falling water. I awaken to the gentle sounds of the forest, awakening to a new day.
Stretching after a full night of blissful rest, I leave the safety of my temporary sanctuary to search for something to quell the rumbling in my stomach.
Not wanting to travel very far from the cave, I stayed close to look for food. Searching for some time I came upon quiet a few bushes of wild blueberries.
Or at least I thought they were blueberries? I have never been outside of the house and never got to see anything like these before.
Slowly taking one of the small blueberries I then put the thing in my mouth, the sweetest taste hits my tongue. Smiling at the delightful flavor, I then began to quell my hunger with these sweet berries.
By the time I had finished my meal it was about midday. The sun was high and very hot, deciding against traveling at this time of day. I headed back to the cave to rest during the hot part of the day.
I would continue my journey when the day had cooled more. Slipping into a peaceful slumber, I slept the hot day away.
When I had awaken from my sleep; the sun was low in the sky and the air was perfumed with the sweet scents of early evening.
Gathering my things I then set out to find a town that was near to me. When I get there, I will ask the towns people about my grandfather.
Knowing he was like me, I knew he would take me in and take care of me. Whenever my grandfather would come to visit the family, he would always bring food to me.
He was so kind and gentle to me; I loved my grandfather very much and was determined to find him again.
I decided to head towards the mountains in the distance, knowing that I would probably come upon a small town.
Walking for a time I finally came to a town, everyone I would ask just ignores me. Sighing in defeat I sit down on a crate and start to weep.
A young man walks slowly up to me, “are you ok?” he asks. Sniffling I look up at him, “no, I have been asking people about my grandfather but no one will talk to me”.
The young man thinks for a minute then runs out into the road and shouts to the villagers” if any of you know about this person’s grandfather please tell me now!”
One of the men walk over to me, he tells me that my grandfather lives about 10 miles north of the village. I thank him and the young man for their help; then set out to find my grandfather.
By the time I had left the village; the sun was almost gone from the sky and the eternal orb of the night was just peaking its head over the horizon.
Deciding to find a place to rest for the night, I would continue my trek in the morning.
I knew that it would be too dangerous for me to travel during the night; so I headed to a near by tree to sleep in for the night.
Climbing the tree I settle on one of the more protected branches, knowing I would be safe here until morning came.
I sat there on that branch staring at the glowing orb that hung over the trees, sighing I wondered why I have to suffer each month at the hands of this accursed moon.
I lay myself down on a nice outcrop in the tree and fall into a deep dreamful sleep.
(Dream state)
I am running fast and happy through the woods, the cool night’s air wiping at my face. I pounce and chase anything that moves, the silver wolf letting out great howls of pure untamed joy. Then something dark and scary starts to move towards me.
I run scared as fast as my wolf legs would allow, panting hard I do not stop. No matter how fast I run the shadow gets ever closer until!
Springing awake from the dream I am sweating and panting hard, what could it mean? Is the shadow in my dreams my father? I freeze when I here familiar voices talking below the tree I am in.
“Father are you sure he came this way?” (My brother?) “Yes, I’m sure he came this way; the villagers said he was heading in this direction”
I am terrified; shaking in the tree, they cannot find me now; not when I am so close to finally being free and finding a new home.
I listen quietly to them until they finally give up and start to head home, I do not move until I am sure they are no longer near me.
Getting my things I jump out of the tree, they turn and see me. But have no chance to catch me when I ran away fast. Running quickly away from my pursuers I do not stop, my heart pounds in my chest as my feet pound on the road.
Stopping for a small break, I am shocked to find that my father and brother had given up on trying to catch me. Laughing at this, I turn and whistle as I continue my journey.
By the time I finally reached my grandfather’s cabin the sun was already in the sky. Panting hard as I approached the house, I can no longer support my weight and collapse on the porch.
I awoke as something cold was placed on my head, moaning in pain as I tried to sit up; but something or rather someone gently pushed me back down on the bed.
“ Shhhh… do not try to get up you are still very weak” a soft kind voice said. {That voice! I know that voice, granddad!} Opening my eyes I saw the smiling face of my grandfather.
