chapter 5
Raina pushed the thoughts from her mind, again crying from painful memories. She was starving but had already had the debate with herself whether or not she should chew off her own tongue. She remember seeing a movie where a guy had done that, but she figured with her luck, right after, she would be released and unable to talk for the rest of her life. She wasn't even sure if she would talk again if she ever got out. As it was, she barely said more than a word or two at a time. Raina vowed to herself, that if she ever got out alive, she'd kill Mark, and gladly serve any time they could have given her for murder. From what she had seen in movies and on TV, prison didn't seem as bad as this. She could hear King scratching at the door as he had done every so often. His scratching became more insistent as if he had done it enough she would be able to open the door to let him in. She had hated the dog for what happened on the first night but had since found him to be more caring and sympathetic than Mark.
"AWOOF" came the gruff bark from King, startling Raina. She couldn't remember hearing him barking for days. He began pawing at the door again, so hard that she could hear it shaking in its frame. King barked again, causing her body to jump against the bonds. King kept right on scratching at the door and she couldn't help but wonder why. They say animals sense things before they happen, maybe I'll die soon, Raina thought. God, I hope I die soon, she added.
The dog kept on barking and scratching at the door. 'Someone's here!' she thought suddenly, and she began to moan loudly around the gag and tried lifting her feet to kick the table, anything to get noticed. Raina could hear King, barking even more. Suddenly the door swung open and Raina was momentarily blinded by the bright sunlight that came pouring into the dark room. She heard a loud gasp but passed out after feeling King's tongue licking the tears of joy form her face.

Raina's eyes fluttered open and she looked around a room she didn't recognize. 'It wasn't all a dream, thank God, or am I dead?' she thought. She pushed herself into a sitting position on the large bed and looked around the room. Slate gray walls with a hardwood floor with light blue area rugs surrounded the huge four-poster bed which was covered with a dark blue comforter with light blue sheets that were the same color as the area rugs. Off to the corner there was a bookshelf built into the wall that reached from the floor to the ceiling and there was a large dresser near the door. Raina realized that she was still naked but had to have been bathed as she no longer smelled of feces or sweat. She wrapped a sheet around her and began to get out of bed but her legs failed her and she fell the floor with a loud thud. Raina was trying to stand yet again to at least pull herself back onto the bed when the door opened.
A man walked into the room, looking to be in his late 20's, over six feet tall and pretty well built. As if that wasn't frightening enough, he said nothing as he silently walked to her, his icy blue eyes never leaving hers. Raina began pushing herself backwards as he got closer, more and more franticly until she hit a wall. She took the fetal position as he reached a hand out to her, trying desperately to get further away she shrank to the floor, shaking in fear with tears flowing. The man leaned down, scooping her up in his arms and placing her back on the bed. He sat down beside her and started stroking her hair before jumping off the bed suddenly. He walked hurriedly towards the door, turning around in the doorway and holding up one finger before disappearing.

Raina still had a puzzled look on her face when he returned 15 minutes later with some soup and a glass water. He placed it beside her on a table next to the bed and left the room again, returning with a T-shirt and some flannel pajama pants. He placed the clothing on the bed and stood next to her, again stroking her red hair. He moved his hand to cup her cheek and looked into her eyes before letting go and walking towards the door again.
"WAIT!" Raina called out after him. "At least tell me where the bathroom is." He opened the door all the way and stepped to the side before pointing to a door directly across the hall. He smiled at her, and then shut the door on his way out of the room. Raina was again left alone and completely confused.
