A Reunion and A Goodbye
Mary left Professor Siegel’s office feeling a little bit better. Maybe, just maybe I can bring Lily and Edward together again, if only just for a night; thought Mary. “Hey Lily.” Mary called out as she put her bag down and took off her jacket. “Mary, I’m sorry about blowing up at you last night. It’s not your fault I can’t see Edward, I just get so frustrated sometimes.”
“I understand Lily. Actually I might have some good news for you. When you did you die?”
“1870.”
“No, what was the date?”
“March 15, 1870\"
“Great, that’s tomorrow!”
“What’s so great about me dying in March?”
“Well I just mean that it hasn’t passed yet.”
“What hasn’t passed?”
“The anniversary of your death. I talked to Professor Siegel today, she knows all kinds of different stuff about ghosts and whatnot. I asked her about why couldn’t you leave the room.”
“And?”
“She’s not sure, but she said that you might be able to do something on the anniversary. She said there is something powerful about anniversaries, and that you might be able to gather enough energy to open the door, or whatever to see Edward.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, at least she thinks, you’ll be able to.”
“Well it’s worth a try.”
“What time did you die?”
“Um...I’m guessing sometime in the evening,” Lily ventured.
“Okay...hmm...and what time did Edward die?”
“I’m guessing since I only hear him at two in the morning, that he died somewhere around that time.”
“So we’ll try to open the door and have you see him tonight, and if that doesn’t work then we’ll shoot for after your time of death,” Mary planned. A few hours later found Mary typing away at her keyboard doing homework and Lily pacing back and forth, more than a little nervous. “It’s almost time,” Lily said walking back and forth by the door. “Calm down, remember that if you can’t walk through the open doorway to get to Edward, then we can always try after when you would have died.” Mary calmly told Lily. “Yeah...you’re right. Mary, would you mind opening the door? I’d rather just try walking out the door, then getting my hopes up and not being able to even open the stupid door.”
“I can open the door Lily.”
“Thanks.”
“No problem. Anyways it’s almost time...I’m going to open the door and just kinda go to bed. You think you can close the door afterwards regardless of what happens?”
“Yeah I think I can manage that.”
“Thanks Lily.”
“Thank you Mary. Thank you for trying to help me with this.”
“You’re welcome Lily. I hope everything goes alright.”
“Me too.”
Mary opened her dorm room door, and then climbed into bed and fell asleep. Lily walked over to Mary’s bed and pulled her covers up, then picked up the clothes that Mary had changed out of earlier and put them into Mary’s hamper. Glancing at the clock she noticed that Edward should begin his nightly climb. Running a hand over her hair, she walked over to the doorway and cocked her head to try and heard Edward’s footsteps on the staircase. Lily heard Edward as he made it to the first floor, then the second and started onto the third floor, she took a deep breath and tried to walk outside the door. Instead of a brick wall, the doorway felt like it had been made out of a sponge or some kind of gelatin. She pushed a little and finally felt whatever the doorway was made out of give, and she was then standing in the hallway. “Lily?” Lily turned towards the voice and stared in disbelief as she saw Edward on the stairs. “Edward?” Lily said.
“Lily, I thought you were dead. The train derailed...there weren’t any survivors.”
“I know Edward, I had missed the train that day.”
“Oh. Lily can we go home? I’m tired of climbing these stairs.”
“Yes Edward, we can go.” With that Lily turned and said “Goodnight Mary...and thank you,” as she closed the door and she and Edward dissipated as they walked down the stairs together.
