Chapter 5
Where the Fish Swim - Chapter 5
I continue to stare at my hand in disbelief for several minutes. Kari makes no attempt to interrupt me, seeing as how she is staring in the now holy trees in amazement.
Had I really just thrown a rock through several trees? Am I imagining things?
I clutch and un-clutch my hand several times before picking up another stone and attempting to repeat the act I had just done. Aiming at a tree not fifteen feet away from me, I pull back my arm and throw with all my might. The stone leaves my hand and falls short of the tree by feet.
Kari looks at me with a questioning glance as I pick up another rock and attempt to break the tree again, but getting the same result.
“What the hell?” I question out loud,
“Wha…What did you do before?” Kari questions.
“How the hell should I know? I just threw the rock”
“Well…do it again”
“What the hell do you think I have been trying to do?!?”
Kari looks down at the ground. I can see tears falling from her eyes.
“Kari-chan…,” I start as I walk over and put a hand on her quivering shoulder.
At the feel of my touch she tries to pull away, but I grab her other shoulder. Seeing that there is no route of escape she lunges into my chest and releases her tears. I hold the sobbing figure of my friend close.
I know she isn’t crying about me yelling at her. These are the tears that she has been holding back all this time. These are tears shed for our village that is lost. These are tears for our parents…Our parents…Those words eco around inside my head. Every time it hits a wall in my head, it stings.
Just this morning my loving mother had smiled upon us as she bid Kari and I off. My tough and yet loving mother.
As the thought of my mother being torn apart by that “thing” plays in my head I feel the sting of tears at the back of my eyelids. I can’t cry now…Kari needs me to be strong…
As if feels like I am going to lose to my thoughts and join Kari, a low growl emanates from behind the bush right next to us. The adrenaline in my blood starts my heart pumping fast as I pull Kari away from the bush. Her crying has now stopped, but her eyes stand wide in fear as she clings to my side.
As the bush lets out another growl it starts to shake.
I can feel the hairs on the back of my neck rise as the prickle of fear washes over my skin.
“Who…Who is there?!?” I yell while trying to feign confidence.
As soon as those words leave my mouth the bush shakes violently and a nose begins to emerge. A cold, wet, black nose pokes out of the bush followed by a gray muzzle and brown eyes. It is a grey wolf, but then why is it bothering us? I have rarely ever seen them near our village because they are timid and don’t like to be near humans. This wolf seems different though. It continues to approach us as if it intends to kill us.
As I hold Kari closely as she whimpers while we back away I notice that this wolf looks different than normal ones. Usually the fur of a wolf is clean and groomed. This wolf’s hair is matted and unkempt.
The wolf continues to slowly approach as it curls back it’s lip, showing it’s teeth in a snarl.
With every small slow step we take back the wolf steps forewords fearlessly.
I begin to search for an object I may be able to fend off this wolf with out of the corner of my eye. As I step back I feel my foot back into something. It is a pointed piece of wood from the tree I had just put a hole through. As I reach down slowly the wolf suddenly grows impatient and with a great snarl, lunges at us.
Kari falls back and pulls me with her. As we fall I reach frantically for the piece of Wood. As the wolf is so close that it shades the sun from us, I finally feel my hands grasp the piece of wood and hold it out in front on myself. As soon as my arms extend I feel resistance against the wood.
I slowly open my eyes as I feel a warm liquid run onto my hand. The piece of wood had impaled the wolf through it’s throat. Where the wood entered it’s throat copious amounts of blood are bubbling out with a gurgling sound. The wolf lays still on the end of the piece of wood. As the blood flow begins to decrease, it’s body suddenly shudders and becomes heavy and still.
I push the wolf off to the side and stare at my blood covered arms. My heart is beating rapidly. The adrenaline pounding through my veins was so great that it takes a small while to realize that Kari is trying to push my off of herself. As I notice this I blush and promptly getting up bow in apology.
Kari stares straight at me in anger…No…Not in anger…In fear. Why does she fear me? Is it the blood covering my arms? No, she is looking at my face…No…She is looking past me.
As a dropping feeling enters the pit of my stomach I slowly begin to turn around. Out of the corner of my eye I see another wolf lunge at me. With no time to react the wolf knocks me onto the ground and I lose my weapon.
My mind goes into panic and shock as the wolf bites into my flesh and begins to shake it’s head around, ripping my flesh off.
With no weapon, this it the end…*Bang!*
As the great bang rings out through the trees, the mouth of the wolf relaxes as it falls to the ground dead.
“What the hell you doin out here without a guard you idiots?!?”
I look up and see a dark skinned man rushing towards me and everything begins to swivel from the pain in my arm. Just as he is about to reach me, the swiveling vision fades to black as I pass out.
I hope you liked chapter five. I know I enjoyed writing it!
