Raquella, Lucilla and now... Kessie Marie
Chapter Five: Raquella, Lucilla and now...Kessie.
The months flew by and Raquella became closer and closer to her due date. Raquella was doing well in the last few months. She had an ultrasound, and that had shown that they were pregnant with a little healthy girl. Both women decided on the name of ‘Kessie Marie.’
Canadian laws stated that the one carrying the child, unless it was a surrogate. So the couple decided that Raquella would be put as the mother on the birth certificate and Lucilla would be put down as the father for their child, seeing as how Raq was the pregnant one.
Raquella had quit her job as a waitress after she was almost eight months along, and stayed home for that month, preparing for the baby and cleaning and such.
It had become a tradition that every night Raq and Lucy would take a hot shower together. Lucilla would be gentle and pay extra attention to Raquella’s swollen abdomen, making sure to talk to the child in it, singing to it and washing it softly. She loved to feel the baby’s every slight kicking and moving. Lucilla was as excited about the new child as Raquella was.
It had been a few more weeks, and Raquella was beyond plump. The couple had just ended their normal evening shower and Lucilla had walked to their room and Raquella had started to brush her teeth. Lucy had just pulled the blankets down on their bed when she heard a scream.
“LUCILLA!”
Lucilla had never ran that fast in her entire life, she came to a sudden stop in the doorway of the bathroom. There, to her horror and surprise, Raquella stood in a small puddle of water.
“Lucilla” Raquella whispered, “My water just broke...”
Lucilla hurried to gather the two bags of things that they would take to the hospital and hurried to the car where Raquella was sitting.
Moments later, Lucilla was hurrying towards the hospital. Raquella was starting to have contractions. “Lucilla...don’t go too fast.” Raquella said, between contractions.
Sure enough, it wasn’t two minutes before the flashing lights appeared in the rear view mirror. She pulled over, anxious as another contraction hit Raquella.
The cop slowly walked up towards the car, Raquella began to sweat. Lucilla waited until the cop walked up to her window.
“Excuse me, Ma’am? May I see your licence, registration, and proof of insurance?”
“Officer, she is in labor, and I have to get her to the hospital...”
That was all she needed to tell the officer. He gave them an escort to the hospital.
***
The night seemed endless to both women, as Raquella’s labor moved at a snail’s pace. It was five in the morning now and all she had dilated to was a six, not ready to push yet. Several times the nurses and doctors asked her if she would like something for the pain, but each and every time she had, graciously as she could, refused.
Because of her impending delivery, Raquella could not get even a wink of sleep, every time she started to doze off she would tense in another contraction and wake up all over again. Lucilla stayed awake by her side, much to the dismay of Raquella, who wished that her wife and friend would at least get some rest.
Lucilla held her wife’s hand and laid her head in the crook of her laboring wife’s neck, it was early the next morning, “You are so strong, Raq...”
Raquella’s eyes were half closed as her body tensed up with another strong contraction. She let out a gasp and not another sound until the contraction and their pains passed, then, with slight tears in her eyes she spoke, “You are too...”
The nurses finally moved her from the Triage room and to the delivery room, where Raquella and Lucilla were dressed in birthing clothes and prepared for a Wiccan delivery ceremony. Lucilla lay on the soft, but firm chair and held onto Raquella as she lay back into her arms. Lucilla stroked her hair softly and chanted a spell into her ear.
“Goddess of strength, gracious woman of power, woman of the womb,
Grant my mate the power to bring our child, your child of the eternal womb, into this world with little pains. Grateful Isis, wonderful woman of the universe,
This child is wishing to join us in the world of this realm, out of the realm that is within you, within her...”
Raquella cringed in pain as a strong contraction caused her to throw her head back and bite her lip. Lucilla reached over to a small table that was set next to them for the birthing process. She dipped a small rag into a potion and wrung the cloth out, then placed it onto Raquella’s head. That seemed to relax and calm the woman, the pains disappeared for a while. Raquella was quiet and Lucilla continued to whisper the spell.
“Isis, oh, Goddess, my mate is in pain, this child is soon to come into this
world, the pains are growing closer and closer, but with the arrival of our
Child of Isis, arrives the pains and dangers for the mother, the womb, the
carrier. Please protect her, please protect the womb, the symbol of you, and
the woman that You are carried in. Isis... Isis...”
Lucilla again grabbed something off of the table, this time, it was a long match, which she used to light a pink candle, for the child to be born, a white candle, and a special mix of incense. Raquella mumbled in a trance like state as Lucilla anointed her forehead with a pentacle in the holy water and oil mix.
The doctor knocked on the door and opened it up. He smiled at the women, “Mrs. Wynter... how is she taking this pain?”
Lucilla smiled, “She is doing better now that we can preform the birthright ceremony without worrying about the other patients interrupting.”
The doctor seemed worried, “I wasn’t interrupting, was I?”
Lucilla shook her head and held her wife’s hand, wrapping the other’s fingers around the taunt and swollen abdomen.
The doctor nodded and walked over to them. Raquella was laying so the doctor could check her. Lucilla kissed her wife’s neck as the doctor told them, “It is almost time, Raquella... Lucilla, she is dilated at a nine, zero effaced.”
Lucilla smiled and nodded, “She will be asleep, tranced.”
Lucilla slept for a few minutes off and on for almost an hour. The doctor came in again in almost an hour. As soon as the doctor opened the door, Raquella seemed to come out of the trance.
Lucilla woke up as soon as Raquella made a small whimper of pain. Lucilla held her wife’s abdomen and talked to her. “Raquella...it’s almost time to push.”
The doctor checked Raquella and his eyes grew wide, “There is the head.”
“Lucy?” Raquella whispered, tears in her eyes, “Did you hear that?”
Lucilla kissed her check, and Raquella leaned back against her, “Yes, Raq... we are going to have a daughter soon.”
The doctor called for two nurses and an incubator. Soon, the room was abuzz with the sounds of the medical staff preparing for the birth.
“Push...” The blonde haired nurse said as she held one of Raquella’s legs. “1.....2.......3........4...... 5...........6..........7............8...........9.........and ....10\"
Raquella let out a gasp and a groan, and Lucilla whispered the same thing, over and over again, “Goddess protect us...”
It was at five seventeen in the afternoon when Kessie Marie was born, weighing in at six pounds, seven and a half ounces. She had a head of blonde hair and brilliant blue, sparkling eyes.
After the cord was cut and Kessie was cleaned, Lucilla moved over to preform the welcoming ceremony on the new arrival, then the cleansing ceremony on both mother and child.
First, Lucilla took a small lock of the child’s hair and wrapped a pink ribbon around it, then she lit a small pink volte candle and set the hair down beside it. Lucilla lit a cone of a special incense mixture of dragon’s blood, Jasmine, rose and lavender.
She took a small drop of pure honey and let the incense burn, then took the ashes of the incense and mixed the two together, then Lucilla took the small dish to Raquella, who let a single tear, the tear of happiness, into the mixture.
Lucilla then mixed it up into a fine golden paste, then with great delicacy and care she took a small yew wand and dipped it into the potion. With the care of a mother, she drew a pentacle on Kessie’s chest with the honey mixture, then took more of the ash and dusted it over the honey mixture.
Then she took Kessie over to Raq, who got to say the blessing. All the nurses stood in the room and looked on in awe as Raquella spoke the spell.
“Born unto us this day, the fruit of my womb, the fruit of Isis, the fruit of my body, this child of Wicca, this child of life. With this ritual, we are blessed, to have a child born today, a lovely little girl. We took a lock of hair as a blessing on her future, we burned incense as a blessing to her body, and we rubbed her with honey as a blessing to those she touches. With these blessings we ask Isis’ watchful eye be over her and may she always be safe...”
Raquella and Lucilla said together, “So Mote it Be.”
Now that the child’s birthing ritual was completed, Lucilla continued onto the next and final ritual, the cleansing of both mother and child. Birthing is a messy business and it was a typical thing to be cleansed.
Lucilla let the candles burn, as this was part of continuing ceremony. Raquella held onto Kessie and Lucilla anointed Raquella with Dragon’s Blood Resin, which was very important for Raquella, oil on her forehead and marked her on her shoulder with Raquella’s own dagger, not deep, just enough to cause a single droplet of blood to fall onto her shoulder. Lucilla then took her oil covered finger and whipped up the blood and smudged some on her forehead and onto Kessie’s as well. Then she kissed Raquella, letting some of the blood on her own forehead to transfer to Raq.
“Goddess has granted us unsurpassed joys today, let us remain in this happiness for our entire lives.” Lucilla whispered.
Then, with no other word, the baby was returned to the incubator, the mothers cleaned off the blood and the oils and honey on all of them. Lucilla was the first to finally speak. “Sleep.” She said to Raquella.
Raquella nodded, “As long as you do too.’
Then Lucilla turned to see the two nurses staring at them. “You may take Kessie to the nursery if you’d like, we are done with the rituals.” Lucilla said as she blew out the candles and packed the supplies into a bag.
The nurses took the baby for a while as Raquella slept and Lucilla pulled out the cot and slept next to her. It was the start of a happy family.
