Chapter 5

Chapter 5

“Ok class.” Mr. C said to his first period students. “The bell has rung, so lets everyone get into their seats so we can begin today’s lesson.” Bobby found his seat in the back and sat down. Willis sat next to him and chuckled a bit.

“What’s with you?” Bobby asked as he opened his binder.

“Olive Oil has got a surprise waiting on him.”

Bobby scowled. “What do you mean?”

Willis put his finger to his lips to shush him. “Just wait.”

Oliver walked to his seat and found a folded piece of paper with his name on it. He opened it and it read: Hey queer, how about sucking my dick after class? Oliver slowly balled the paper up and dumped it in the trash. People can be so stupid. Oliver thought.

“That was what you had planned?” Bobby asked Willis.

“No. That wasn’t me. That was Kevin Mauberry.” Willis chuckled. “He asked Oliver to blow him after class.”

Bobby rolled his eyes. “Then what are you going to do, Willis?”

“You’ll see. Just wait until after class. You can join me if you want.”

Bobby just sighed. These guys are starting to become obsessed with hurting poor Oliver.

“All right, class. Before I get started, I’m going to give back the vocabulary tests.” Bobby held his breath. He finished his test so fast that Monday, he wondered if any of them were right. Mr. C started passing the papers out. “Miss Harris, 94. Miss Jones, 85. Mr. Zumackis, 88. Mr. Pierce, 100.........” He kept going on and on until he got to Bobby. “Mr. Ardenay, 100. Congratulations.” Bobby let out a sigh of relief. He couldn’t help himself; he smiled from ear to ear. He looked up towards the front of the class and saw Oliver looking back smiling just as much as he was. When Mr. C moved on, Bobby mouthed a “Thank you” to Oliver. Oliver simply nodded.

He’s such a good guy. Bobby looked sadly at the boy once he turned back in his seat. Little does he know what Willis has planned for him after class. I’ve gotta go. I can’t let him hurt Oliver. I...........care too much.

When the bell rang, the students started leaving the classroom. Oliver started walking down the hall to his journalism class, when a hand covered his mouth and he was grabbed from behind and carried to the nearest boy’s bathroom.

When Bobby left the class, he started searching the halls. “Where is he?” He mumbled.

Oliver was tossed to the floor. He looked up slowly and saw Martin in front of him, AB to left of him, Willis to the back after he locked the door, and Phillip on his right, looking like he didn’t want to be there. AB took his Timberland boot clad foot and kicked Oliver over to his back. Oliver grabbed his ribs and looked at them, scared of what they had planned to do. “You know, Oliver.” Martin started. “Me being one of the best football players Danbrook has ever seen, gives me a shoe in with the ladies. I mean, they fall all over me. I get my dick sucked every afternoon.”

“Good for you.” Oliver said nonchalantly. That earned him a kick in his ribs. Oliver groaned at the pain.

“No one asked for your input, queer. Anyway, as I was saying. Because of the big loss we had against Wilmington, the girls have kind of kept their distance. You remember that game, don’t you?” He grabbed Oliver’s ears and twisted them.

“Yes!”

He let go. “Well, like I said, every afternoon some girl would come and service me. But since this game passed, me and the guys have been left in the dust. I myself, woke up with a major boner today...” Martin unzipped his pants and pulled out his stiff erection from the opening of his boxers. Pre-cum was oozing out the tip. Oliver’s breathing started to eradicate and he could feel another asthma attack coming again.

***

“Damn!” Bobby said as he checked the halls again. The tardy bell had rung a few seconds ago and he still couldn’t find Oliver. He knew something was wrong. Oliver would never be late for a class. As he passed by the boy’s bathroom he heard wheezing and people murmuring something. He slowly walked to the door and tried to push it open. When he found it locked, he banged on it. “Willis, let me in.” He heard the lock and when the door just cracked open, he pushed his way through, knocking Phillip back against the wall. Oliver was against a stall door on his knees, with AB and Willis holding each arm. Martin was standing infront of Oliver; his erection staring the boy in the face.

Bobby saw a look of fright on the boy’s face and he got pissed. “Martin, what the fuck are you doing?!!”

“Shut up, Bob. Can’t you see I’m busy here?”

Bobby could hear Oliver’s wheezing getting louder. If he didn’t get his inhaler soon, he didn’t know what would happen. “Leave him alone. Can’t you see you’re giving him an asthma attack?!”

“If he’d open his mouth, it would be over with soon enough.”

“It’s over now!” Bobby shoved Martin so hard, he slammed into the wall.

“Just who do you think you are?!” Martin asked as he zipped his pants and walked towards Bobby. Martin swung at him and Bobby ducked. Bobby grabbed him by the waist and slammed him into the wall and they started to fight. AB and Willis dropped Oliver to the floor and joined in on fighting Bobby. Phillip circled around them and grabbed Oliver in his arms and carried him to the nurse.

The lady asked what happened and even though he knew he’d be in trouble too, he told her he and the gang were starting a fight with Oliver and Bobby stopped it. Though he DIDN’T tell about Martin’s prick in the boy’s face. She called for Deputy Carl Rogers -school cop- and he and the assistant principal, Mr. Tucker, raced to the bathroom. Both men grabbed two boys and pulled everybody apart. “Bobby, Martin, AB, Willis, did you guys know you were fighting each other?” Deputy Rogers asked laughing. “I believe you boys are going blind.”

“Or dumb one.” Mr. Tucker added.

They took them to Principle Harmon’s office. She tried to listen to what caused the fight, but the boys kept saying one thing then another, then they’d all start fussing at once, that she couldn’t get the full story. She didn’t really care. She gave all five of them-including Phillip- 10 days suspension. Oliver went home early that day.

“How could you be so stupid, son?!” Skip asked Bobby when he got home from work that afternoon. Bobby was sitting on his bed with his head in his hands. “Huh?! Answer me!”

“How do you expect to get your education suspended?” Pauline asked.

“Forget that! What about football?! It was an absolute guarantee that you were going to get a football scholarship! Fighting?! All this because you were fighting! And your best friends at that! What were you fighting about?!”

They'd never understand if Bobby told him what he was really fighting for, so he decided to lie. “About the game last Friday.”

“About the game?! All you had to do was finish this last year of high school, son! After that was over, I wouldn’t give a damn if you faught your grandmother! Stupid! Just stupid!” Skip walked out, followed by his wife.

When she shut the door, Bobby laid back on his bed and stared at the ceiling. He grabbed his phone and dialed Priscilla’s number and asked for Oliver’s phone number. When he got it, he hung up with her and called Oliver. “Hello?” A female voice said.

“Hello, is Oliver there?”

“Who is this?” The woman scowled.

“Bobby Ardenay.”

Her voice softened. “Oh. I’m sorry Bobby. I’ve heard a lot about you. I didn’t mean to snap, but there are times when people will call my Oliver to tease him.”

“I understand, Ms. Pierce.”

“Hold on a sec. I’ll get him for you.”

After being put on hold for a few minutes, Bobby heard the familiar soft, melodious voice. “Hello?” Oliver’s voice could melt the coldest heart in Bobby’s eyes.

“Hey, Oliver.”

“Bobby? How are you?”

“Fine. A bit sore but not as beat up as I thought. I've seen worse beatings on the football field.” Oliver giggled. “How about you? Are you feeling better?”

“Much thank you. If it wasn’t for Phillip, I don’t know what would’ve happened. How long did Mrs. Harmon give you?”

“Ten days. We also miss two games. My parents are pretty pissed at me right now.”

Oliver was silent. “I’m sorry, Bobby. It’s my fault all this happened to you.”

“Don’t blame yourself for a thing, Oliver. None of it was your fault. What I did, I did of my own free will.............I couldn’t help it though. When I walked in that bathroom and saw what I saw--you shaking in fear and wheezing, and Martin the guys dead set on doing what they came to do...........I exploded. If it was just me and Martin, I believe I would’ve killed him.”

“Don’t say that.”

“It’s true. If not killed him, I would’ve hurt him really bad, Oliver. I care about.............. You’re my friend. It’s hard to walk in on your friend being used like a toy.” Oliver caught Bobby’s little correction and smiled. Even though the football player never came out and said it.....he liked him.

“Thank you for saying that. Even if it was a bit harsh against Martin, I appreciate it all the same. You really are a good friend to me, Bobby. So, ten days, huh? What will you do for ten whole days?”

“I don’t know, but basing it on how mad my parents were today, I’ll bet you -whatever it is- it won’t be any fun.” They both laughed.

“Well, if it’s any consolation, I’m here for you if you need me.”

“It is. I’ll talk to you later, Oliver.”

“Ok. Bye, Bobby.” Oliver hung up the phone and collapsed on his bed with a satisfied smile on his face. “He likes me.”

***

“Why are you so chipper, this morning?” Priscilla asked Oliver when he walked into class and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Oliver sat next to Priscilla.

“I think I’m falling in love.” He whispered.

Priscilla’s interest peaked. “With who?” She whispered back.

A smile slowly crossed his lips. “With Bobby.”

“What?”

“With......”

“I heard you the first time, you loon. I just couldn't believe my ears.” She joked.

“Oh.”

“So what brought this about?”

“I don’t know. It’s hard to explain really. You would’ve had to have been there to get the effect.”

“Tell me anyway.”

“Well, I’m assuming you heard about what happened yesterday?”

“Yeah.”

“It was amazing how he just fought his best friends for me. I haven’t even known him remotely as long as he does his friends, and he stood up to them for me. He called me that afternoon and asked me if I was ok. When I told him I was fine, he went into this whole spill about how he would’ve killed Martin if given the chance. You know when you’re talking really fast, things that you really mean slip out when you don’t want them to?” Priscilla nodded. “Bobby said he cared for me.”

“Really?”

“Well, not all the way. He stopped himself when he said: I care about........

“Maybe he was going to say he cared about dogs.” She smiled.

“Shut up. I’m serious.” Oliver laughed. “What do you think? You think he likes me too?”

“I don’t know, Oli. That’s something you’ll have to find out on your own.”

Class started and Mrs. Austin decided to make some changes. Apparently she wasn’t very pleased with Priscilla’s column on Danbrook Titans vs. Wilmington Vikings, so she gave the sports section to Oliver and student life to Priscilla.

“Did you say he’s gay?” Deputy Rogers asked. He, Martin, AB, and Willis were in the woods near the Danbrook creek talking to the policeman outside his car. He was supposed to be patrolling the area.

“Yes sir.” Willis answered. “He's sweet as a Georgia peach.”

“So you boys were just teaching him a lesson?”

“Yes sir.” Martin said. “That boy has got to understand, this is a small town. Him bringing that kind of behavior to Danbrook is unacceptable.”

AB jumped in. “Sir, we were only trying to let him know that this town doesn’t take well to his kind. We didn’t hurt the boy, but we get suspended for it. Now what college scout will want to get us into college?”

Deputy Rogers shook his head. “I think it’s disgusting myself. A man loving other men. It ain’t right. I tell you what, I can’t promise you I’ll get you back into school. That’s over my head. But I can give you this; if you see this Oliver boy in the streets, you can do whatever you want to him, the other officers and I will look the other way. Mind you, it has to be at night. At night no one can guarantee it was you guys that did anything. All right?” The boys nodded. “Good. Now I have to go finish my rounds. You fellas behave yourselves.” He looked at Martin. “See you in church this Sunday?”

“Yes sir.” Deputy Rogers drove off. “Yes sir.” Martin repeated.

After school was over, Oliver grabbed his books and drove to Bobby’s house. Ten days out of school was a long time. Bobby was really starting to do well in Mr. C’s class and he hated to think that he would fall behind. He walked to the front door and knocked. He heard movement, then the door opened. Bobby was standing there barefooted and wearing gray slacks and a red short sleeve button down shirt. “Hey, Oliver.”

“Hi.”

“What brings you here?”

Oliver went blank for a moment. He couldn’t get passed Bobby’s shirt and how the few buttons that were fastened still managed to show his smooth, tan, and muscular chest. “Um, I brought you the work we had to do in Mr. C’s class. You were doing so well before, I don’t want you to fall behind.”

“Thanks. That was really nice of you.”

“No problem. Just don’t tell the teacher. They want you to suffer when you come back to school. So just try to look dumb when you come back.”

Bobby laughed. “I will.” Oliver gave him his book. “Wait I can’t use your--”

“Yes you can. I’ve already done the homework during lunch today. I wrote the assignment down for you and stuck it in the book.”

Bobby smiled. No one has ever thought about me like this before. “Thank you, Oliver.”

“Sure.”

When Oliver turned to leave, Bobby called out, “Wait! Do you wanna come in or something?”

Oliver was VERY tempted to say yes, but obligations at home were calling him. “I can’t. My mom is expecting me. Raincheck?”

“All right.” Bobby watched Oliver get into his car and leave. So help me, I’m actually sad he declined.
