Chapter Four: Time
Chapter Four:
Time"¦
Nathan opened his eyes and brushed the sleep out of them. His head was much better.
The light languidly fell across the floor in long stripes, interrupted in places by the trees outside.
Nathan began to get up and noticed that Damien had fallen asleep with his arms wrapped around him. Nathan tenderly placed the arms previously wrapped around him on Damien's chest.
He turned to look at the clock and a single word escaped his mouth. "Putain."
Damien shifted and finally woke up"¦ He sat up and was bathed in the outside light, which blurred the edges of his form. Damien raised his arms and yawned.
"Hello, again." Damien managed, still sleepy. "I guess we fell asleep"¦ I didn't even think I was tired."
"I'm late for a class." Nathan said pointedly.
"Just skip it. Wouldn't this be the first class you've missed? You can miss a couple, you know that right?" Damien was trying to be comforting, but was not succeeding.
"Maybe *you* can miss a few classes, but I can't." He seemed agitated.
"Calm down. Come here." Damien was being commanding, Nathan's eyes lit up; he liked when Damien was commanding.
Nathan strode over to Damien and the taller man held Nathan close, the top of his head reaching Damien's chest.
"You can miss a class"¦ Just leave it at that."
Damien looked down and caught Nathan in a stare.
"Okay." Nathan spoke feebly; Dn's n's eyes didn't only work on women"¦
~~~~~
It was Saturday and Shelly walked the final steps up to a very imposing building, which took up an entire city block.
"It's perfect," Shelly breathed. "It isn't too far from Nathan, and it is a subsidiary of the company I worked at in Chicago"¦"
Shelly swiveled the revolving door to allow herself in.
The lobby was somewhat unused and sterile. There were two large side-tables in the corner and a large security/receptiosk tsk to the left. Shelly made careful steps to the desk and got the attention of the security guard on watch.
"Sir, I am hfor for an interview." Shelly's voices was blunt, her normal joking tone forced down under schooling. At her job, she was a different person.
"Name please," the guard returned in-kind.
"Shelly Mires."
"Yes, I see you here" The older man announced, finally. "Here you are." The man handed a badge and a keycard to her. "Go through this door," he pointed to the only door, "then take the third right; there will be the waiting room."
Shelly took the badge, placed it on her shirt and entered the waiting room. In sitting down, she surveyed the place. It was only half-full, as sterile as the lobby.
"Now, to wait."
~~~~~~~
"Miss Mires, your résumé is impeccable, and you are more than qualified." The person hiring was a younger man, probably in his early thirties, unlike the rest of the place, he was friendly and warm.
Shelly could feel the "˜but' building in the air. Then she was astonished when it was never voiced.
"When can you start?"
Shelly recovered quickly, "As soon as possible."
"Good. You are familiar with all the paper work I assume? All of it is the same as where you worked before"¦"
"Yes, I am quite familiar." She assured him.
Shelly got up, thanked the man, and left the building. She drove the twenty minutes to the dorms and found Nathan's car parked in front.
"˜Does he ever leave this place?' She couldn't really complain; this time she needed him there.
She went to the door and knocked. Nothing. She was pensive for a moment. The moment passed and she went over to Damien's door and repeated her actions. Sounds of quick movement reached the othere ofe of the door.
Damien opened the door only slightly, after waiting a second to catch his breath.
"Is Nathan in there? He wasn't in his room, so, I figured he might be in here."
"Why would you think that?" Damien seemed disconcerted. "Oh"¦ never mind. Yes, he is in here." He turned around, still keeping the door only slightly ajar, and told Nathan that his sister was there looking for him.
Nathan pushed Damien out of the way and entered his sister's line of sight.
"Hey!"
"I have good news to tell you "” Heh, I haven't seen your ears red in a while"¦"
He swung the door open fully, "Good news. What good news?"
"I," she announced, beaming with pride, "got a job."
Nathan look bemused. " You already have a job."
Shelly playfully smacked his arm. "No, I have a job here." She smiled brightly. "I can be close to you again."
Nathan looked so split in emotions. Happiness and trepidation crossed his face, having an all-out war.
"Aren't you happy?" Disappointment painted her every expression.
Nathan dithered, before heartily congratulating her with a hug. "Of course I am happy."
Even Damien slipped his way between the door and Nathan, and joined in the hug.
"˜Yay!' Elation jostled all other thoughts from Shelly's mind.
"Now, I just have to find a place to live"¦" She finally settled down from Damien's, evenocenocent, touch.
"Well, let's go look," Nathan seemed at odds with himself again.
The rest of the day was spent looking for an apartment or a small house, anything which was relatively affordable, and close.
The last place all three of them tottered into, was perfect. It was a relatively small Tudor revival house. Shelly immediately fell in love with it. Although she was sure that she couldn't afford it, she took a tour anyway. She came to the most disappointing point; she asked the price.
Shelly was completely astounded, it was actually affordable. It turned out that the person who was renting it out was an older women who still thought that you could get gas for fifty cents"¦
Because of this she suffered a little bit of guilt, but she got over that.
She loved her new house, but, some time soon she would have to go back to Chicago, get her stuff, and tell her boss that she had transferred herself. This she dreaded.
