Chapter Five

I sat for hours thinking about everything. Terri, Chicago, and Chewelah. But the one that dominated my thoughts, was Lynette Carter. She was to friendly for her own good. She said it was her nature and that she was a people person. I could tell that the moment I met her. She greeted everyon as they came into the bar. Although most of them were probably the usuals there. But I hadn\'t been, and she\'d greeted me with her beautiful smile, and genuine happiness. She was able to make you feel welcomed on your every visit, not just your first.

My thoughts were interupted by a knock on my room door.

\"Hey Tom! How\'s it going?\"

I look to see that Jon has entered my room. Bert rolls his eyes. He\'s imediately irritated by Jon\'s presence.

\"Well hello Jon. I\'m doing pretty... okay, I guess you could say.\" I reply, wondering why Bert doesnt like Jon.
\"Just okay? I suppose thats better then feeling like crap!\" he says.

I chuckle softly, but say nothing in return. I lean back against the wall, legs stretched out in front of me, my feet dangling off the edge of the bed.

\"What\'s on your mind?\" Jon asks.

\"Not what, Who.\" I ans

\"All right then. Who\'s on your mind?\" Jon asks, rephrasing his previous question.

I smile. \"Lynnette Carter.\" I answer.

Just saying her name causes a rush of feelings, and excitement for both Bert and I, and a look of curriousity to come across Jon\'s face.

\"Who would Lynnette Carter happen to be?\" he asks, much like I knew he would.

\"Lynnete is a BEAUTIFUL, young, vibrant, and sweet woman. She\'s like no other woman you\'ve ever met before. Nor will you ever meet another woman like her.\" I answer.

Jon smiles. \"Was she important to you?\" he asks me.

\"Oh yeah. She was my waitress at the bar.\" I answer.

\"Lynnette was your waitress at the bar!\" he exclaims, more than asks.

\"Yes. But she was also my friend. She was sweet, and kind to me when no one else would be. Except for her friends Laurynn, and Mirannda. Mirannda could be quite smart mouthed, and moody at times. But most times she was sweet. Laurynn was always polite. Talked alot, sometimes too much. But Lynne, she was the best.\" I said.

\'You keep talkin\' Tom, and he\'ll know everything! We can\'t have that! Either you shut up, or shut him up when you\'re done blabbing your mouth!\' Bert exclaimed.

I look to him, but say nothing. I now understand why he doesn\'t like Jon. But he has nothing to worry about. Jon would never replace him. No one could replace Bert.

\"What happened to Lynne? You talk about her as is she\one.one.\" Jon says, pulling me away from my thoughts.

I smile. \"She\'s in Chewelah. Living a happy life with her stupid boyfriend. If you were to meet Lynne, you would understand my envy towards her boyfriend.\" I say.

Jon nods. \"Well, it\'s not likely that I\'ll be leaving California anythim soon. So, how about you describe her to me.\" He suggests.

\"Okay. Close your eyes, and clear your mind.\" I say to him.

His eyes close, and Bert smiles. \'You gonna shut up?\up?\' he asks.

I shake my head at him. Looking back to Jon, I begin to tell him what Lynne looks like.

\"Picture a brunette, about 5\'2, curves in ALL the right places. Her hair rests just past her shoulders, and framesher face nicely. She\'s got perfect lips. They look soft, and most likely tast as swee as she is. Her eyes, they are so kind and sweet, and friendly. They are in between dark brown, and soft brown. When she gets upset, they turn dark. But most the time they are soft and friendly. She\'s always smiling. Which only adds to her beautiful features. Her smile lights up her eyes, and the room she\'s in, or walks in. It doesnt matter what the mood of the room is, he smile make it all light. Now, mix all that with a little bit of attitude and spunk, and you have the second most beautiful woman in the world.\" I say to him.

Jon\'s smiling as his eyes open. \"She sound\'s like every mans dream woman. Too bad the women here in California weren\'t like that.\" he says.

He falls silent a moment before he speaks again.

\"You said she was the second most beautiful woman in the world. Whose the first?\" he asked.

\"My dead wife.\" I answer.

He thinks about that for a moment. He has a question about my last statement, it all over his face. But he\'s hesitant to ask. I wouldn\'t answer anyway if he asked.

\"So, what for dinner tonight?\" I ask, kingking the silence.

I notice Bert has disappeared for the time being. He\'ll be back, he always comes back.

\"I don\'t really know. But I do know that Dr. Weis has cleared you to eat with the other patients now.\" he says.

\"Do I have to?\" I ask.

\"Nope. It\'s up to you to decide.\" he replies.

\"Then I don\'t want to. I would rather eat alone.\" I simply state.

Jon nods. \"That\'s fine. We can have them bring it up to your room.\" he says.

I nod. \"And then we can talk about my girls.\" I say with a sick smirk.

He nods. I can tell he\'s not so sure he wants to know about them. But he doesn\'t say anything. And I know he\'ll listen anyway.
