Chapter 5
Nurse Anne returned and handed Jamie a glass of water and one aspirin tablet. Jamie thanked her and swallowed the pill and the water quickly. Anne left again, saying that she had to do some paperwork, but that she would be back later to check up on her. Jamie nodded, and then looked at Bryan. He met her gaze with such intensity that she had to look away. Then she heard him stand up and she looked at him again. "Where are you going?" she asked as he began to walk toward the door.
"Home." Came his short reply. "It's two a.m. and I need to get back."
"If it's that late then you shouldn't be walking around in the dark. It could be dangerous." She said, trying to find another reason to make him stay. She could come up with nothing, so she told him the truth. "Please stay, I... I don't want you to leave me."
Bryan's hand paused on the door handle. That was something he had never heard before. He turned around and looked at her, her eyes glistened, welling up with tears. He sighed and went back to his chair, sitting down again. She smiled at him, and that unfamiliar feeling welled up in his stomach again. "Sleep." He said, and he was only slightly surprised when she laid down and closed her eyes. He heard her breathing become even as he watched her, her face relaxed, a soft smile playing across her lips.
Bryan didn't know how long he had watched her before Anne came back into the room. She held a cup of apple juice and a plain bagel with cream cheese out to him. As he took the food from her she spoke. "I thought you might like this." He nodded to her and set the food down in his lap. Anne checked on Jamie and then left the room again.
After she left he picked up the cup of juice and took a sip. He really had been thirsty. He went to take a bite of the bagel when he felt a small paper stuck to the bottom of it. It had stuck to the cream cheese and he was about to throw it away when he saw his name written on the piece of folded paper. He put the bagel back down and unfolded the paper, reading the short message.
Bryan,

He stared at the note for a minute before he noticed something strange about the note. "How the hell did she know my name?" he said quietly, "I know I didn't tell her." He pondered that for a moment before shrugging and putting the note in his pocket. He bit into the bagel and after finishing it he drank the juice Anne had given him. After he had finished he sat back in his chair and began to study Jamie again. She didn't look like she was in any pain, she looked just like his older sister Mary had when... He abruptly ended that chain of thought and mentally shook himself. No need to think about that now, it happened seven years ago. Just let it go. He told himself.
He took one last look at Jamie and then closed his eyes and slipped into what he hoped would be a dreamless sleep. But, it was not to be. The memories came streaming back to him in a never ending line.

Jamie woke up at the sound of quiet whimpering. She turned and saw Bryan sitting in the chair, his face drawn into a look of pain. She sat up and swung her legs over the side of the bed. Anne had removed the cords or the heart monitor from her chest and she was now able to get up. She stood and her legs shook beneath her for a moment before she righted herself. She moved over to him, the hospital gown swishing against her legs as she moved.
Bryan whimpered again as she stopped in front of him. She reached out a shaky hand and placed it on the side of his face. He relaxed evo slo slightly, but not completely. She leaned closer to him and placed her mouth by his ear. "Shhh ... it's okay, it's just a dream. It's just a dream, you're fine. I'm here, I'm here for you." She whispered to him as she stoked his cheek His whimpering stopped and he relaxed completely. She pulled back so she could look at him. Her gaze rested on his lips a little longer than she felt comfortable with, but... she just couldn't help herself.
She leaned in and brushed her lips over his softly. A soft, almost silent, sigh escaped his lips as she pulled away, blushing furiously. She made sure he was still sleeping as she went back to the bed and laid down on her side. She watched him until she went to sleep, just as he had done. She didn't notice Anne standing in the doorway, smiling as she watched both of them sleep.
