Chapter 5

Leandra Marshall:
Lost and Found

I
escaped, barely but I did.The demons
that held me, for the purpose of expanding their stock, didn’t know what hit
them. Expecting some prim and proper
young lady they got something very different instead, me.style="mso-spacerun: yes">
I’m a wanderer, could even be considered a
hunter but I haven’t quite reached that stage in my life.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I refuse to degrade myself in that manner.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Hunters are vial humans; they’re just as bad
as the people they hunt. I am a seeker
of knowledge, that is why I wander.
Nothing holds me in one place for very long save the promise of new
wisdom. I stayed too long here, that’s
why I got caught. I think that it’s my
time to leave, go on to a new place, a new exploration.

“Well
human, looks like it’s time to take you to the auction.” Someone said from
behind me.

I raised
my hands, knowing that I had a lock pick and a weapon just in case, “May I help
you vampire?” I said softly, knowing that they were the only ones who took
people to auctions.

I turned
to see him, a gun was held in his hand, “Sorry, but I’m not a vampire.” He
said, “Come with me, my mistress wants the money that you’ll bring in.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Put these on.” He said, tossing me a pair of
handcuffs.

I snapped
them on and held my hands out to him, “Ok, take me away if you must.”

He looked
confused but pushed me along in front of him, “I don’t trust you.” He said,
slamming the butt of his pistol into the back of my head.

The
street rushed up to meet me and I was greeted with darkness.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> When I awakened I was chained to a wall,
just as I suspected I would be. Pulling
out the pick from my hair I began to work the lock. A soft click told me that I succeeded. Now it was time for me to get out of here.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Before I could draw my blade a large man
walked in. My eyes grew wide and I
quickly hid in the shadows, hoping that he couldn’t see me.

“Where is
she? The one that Alex brought in,
where is she?” He asked, panic rich in his voice. There was no one else with him.
As he began to search chedched my way to the door, sliding along the
wall, keeping myself in the shadows. As
I reached the door he turned, “I know you’re there. Come out.” He said softly, looking in the direction that I was
standing.< sty style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I froze, “There’s no way out
of here.” He continued, “No way for you to escape. This place is swarming with my kind. Come out now and I will not harm you.”

Putting
the pick in the palm of my hand I stepped out of the shadows.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He smiled as I walked toward him.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Slapping a pair of handcuffs onto me he
pulled me out of the room. I didn’t
protest, didn’t say a word as I was thrown upon the stage.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Carefully I began to pick the lock, slowly,
discreetly. The auctioneer called out
my attributes followed by a hefty starting price. The first hand raised was that of a black haired one.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> There was a youth with him; he had black
hair as well. As the second price was
called the lock snapped open. Quickly
drawing my weapon I grabbed the man who brought me in.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Holding the blade to his throat I backed
away slowly. The first one to bid on me
removed his coat and walked forward carefully.
I took another step back as the sea of vampires parted at his coming.

“I’m
getting out of here.” I said softly, “No one is going to stop me.” I growled.

“Leandra.”
He said softly as he reached the small set of steps leading up to the stage.

“Stay
away from me.” I hissed, digging the blade into my prisoner’s throat.

“I
suggest you cease this foolishness.” He said with a small smile.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> His hand extended toward me, “I am
Adair. What is it that you desire?” He
asked softly, “I can give you anything.”

“I want
to get out of here.” I said angrily, “I want to go on my journey.”

“What do
you seek?”

“Knowledge.”
I replied softly as I continued to back away from him.

He smiled
at that, “I possess great knowledge. I
can give it to you, the knowledge that I possess, but only if you release that
young one.”

I
scowled, “What do you get out of this?” I asked softly.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I knew that they always wanted something in
return.

He half
smiled, “The life of that young one.” He said, pointing to the one I held
against me, “Just calm yourself and release him. We shall leave this place and I shall teach you what I know.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I shall impart to you the knowledge that I
have gained over the centuries.” He reached toward me, “Give me the dagger and
release him. After that you may come
with us, not as my property but as my student.”

There was
something up with this man but I couldn’t quite place my finger on it.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I did as he asked; I gave him my weapon and
released the man. Shoving him away I
walked toward Adair. Taking his hand he
pulled me against him and sank his teeth deep into my flesh.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I cried out as he began to drink.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> The young man with him walked up the steps,
onto the stage. Closing my eyes I sank
into the swoon. He pulled away as I
sank into darkness. left me and only darkness greeted me.

“Wake up
Leandra.” Adair’s soft voice said from above me. I op my my eyes and looked up into his smiling face, “I couldn’t
have you seeing the way home.” He said, helping me sit up, “Leandra, this is
Eric.” He said, motioning to the boy who had been with him.

He was
quite handsome but most definitely a vampire, “What do you want from me?”

Adair
shrugged, “Originally I had planed for you to be Eric’s companion but now I’m
not exactly sure what I should do with you.
There are two choices, two options in this matter.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I can finish what I started back at the
auction and make you into the companion, just as I had planed, or I can do what
I never do, I can make you a blood slave.
I do not like having them; I believe that it takes all the fun out of
unlife.”

Eric
smiled at me and brushed a strand of my fire red hair out of my face, “It’s a
pleasure to meet you.” He said softly.

“Likewise.”
I whispered.

“I like
her Adair. I know that you would have
to cast the spell on her though. She
wouldn’t do things very willingly.” Eric said softly as he gently caressed my
face.

“Get your
hands off me, undead scum.” I growled, twisting away from him.

“Turn
her.” Eric said softly, “She’s got spunk.” He smiled.

“That was
the plan, now hold your tongue.” Adair saiookiooking over at him, “Let us
begin.” He said, grasping the back of my neck, “Relax.” He whispered, his voice
commanding me to do so.

My body
reacted on its own. I felt the gentle
press of his teeth then the sharp pain as they pierced my flesh.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I let out a soft cry of pain and closed my
eyes, wishing for death. It didn’t come
but the blood did, his blood, the blood of the ancient vampire that had
promised me knowledge. His blood tasted
of it, of all that he possessed. I was
drawn from the darkness and into his warm embrace. Opening my eyes I pushed away, escaping him, or at least trying
to. He let me go, as if he knew that I
didn’t want to be near him. Both of
them gave me space, allowing me time to adjust.

“I shall
perform the spell tomorrow night. That
shall give her time to think upon her situation. It matters not what she decides as the spell shall be performed
no matter what. I suggest that you get
some rest Leandra.” He stopped and looked at Eric, “Come, let’s return to the
auction, there’s still time left before it closes, I wish to see the others on
display there.”

“I have a
question I wish to ask her before we go.” I said, Adair nodded, “How is it that
you were captured?”

“I
escaped from a demon only to find myself in a situation that wasn’t a very good
one. A servant to a vampire is what
captured me.” I said softly, “Now, if you would be so kind, please, leave me
alone. I don’t appreciate what you’ve
done and I personally don’t like this very much.”

“Alright.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I’m sure that your view will change
tomorrow. Pleasant night Leandra.” He
said before the two of them left.

“You
bastard.” I whispered, “You son of a bitch.
Of course you couldn’t just let me go.
I already knew about your society, but no, you had to keep me here, not
only that but make me one of you.” I hissed soon after the door shut, “I hate
you, I hate all of you.” I said, slamming my fists against the nearest solid
object, which just happened to be the floor, “I won’t stand for it.” I
whispered.

Slowly
getting to my feet I began to explore.
Hoping to find some information, something to keep me occupied.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> A large library is what I found.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Smiling to myself I began to look through
the books, trying to find something in English. It seemed that everything was in one of the ancient
languages. I knew Latin but this was
unknown to me. I had never seen this
style of writing before. Intri I
I
began to flip through one of the many books.
The pictures held within told the story for me and although I couldn’t
read it the pictures helped fill me in on the meaning behind it.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> The creation of all things, not in the
biblical sense of seven days but in a completely different sense.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Powerful beings, demonic creatures, once
ruled, humanity was but a slave race, held captive by these beings.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> It was then that something happened, I
couldn’t tell by the pictures exactly what occurred but the creatures were
banished. Somehow, from them, vampires
and demons were formed. They were to
rule when the time was right, no longer would the humans thrive.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> That was all I could gather from the ancient
book. Sighing I returned it to its
place.

“Am I a
part of the master race now?” I asked softly as I continued my search.

Shrugging
I pulled another book off the shelf.
This oas bas better; it was in Latin, finally something that I could
actually read. Sitting on the floor I
opened the book and began to read. It
was something that I had already read, something that I had read many times,
the Iliad. At least it was something
interesting and would keep me busy for a little while.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Settling down with the book I waited for them
to get back, what other choice did I have?
It was a couple hours before they got back; with them was a young
woman. She was absolutely filthy, dirt
caked her possibly beautiful skin, clots of blood stuck in her hair.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> It was disgusting, the way that she looked
but they brought her before me. Setting
the book aside I looked up at them.

“May I
help you? I was a little busy reading
if you didn’t notice.” I said coldly.

Adair
chuckled softly, “I’ve brought you something to eat.” He said, throwing the
girl down in front of me.

I scowled
as she struggled to her knees, “This is a human girl. What makes you think that I’m going to eat her?style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Are you nuts?” I asked, slowly getting to my
feet.

“Sorry
Leandra but I’m not, nuts.” He said with a quiet laugh, “Eric, would you excuse
us please. Kill the girl, feed from her
if you like, I don’t care what you do with her, just get her out of my sight, I
have to deal with Leandra.” He said, not taking his eyes off me.

Eric
smiled and grabbed her arm, “Come along then.
Time for you and I to have a little fun.”

As he
pulled her away Adair shook his head, “It would be interesting to see what he’s
going to do with her but, unfortunately, I have to deal with you.” He said in
contempt.

“You must
hate me.” I whispered, “But you know what?
I don’t really care.”

/spa/span>“Good.”
He sneered, grabbing my arm, “Don’t worry, I’m not going to strip you of your
humanity yet, that shall happen tomorrow night. For right now I’m just going to chain you up, the wall beckons.”
He said, pulling me downstairs. A
scream echoed through the house, causing him to chuckle softly, “Sounds like
Eric is enjoying himself.”

I
scowled, “What happened to him? Why is
he that way?” I asked as he pulled me downstairs.

“Lack of
humanity. That is the way that things
work with us. With no humanity comes
ruthlessness. When I first was consumed
I was much like him but I have learned trb mrb my aggressive thoughts and enjoy
the simpler things in this world. Don’t
get me wrong, torture is still a wonderful thing that I enjoy very much but I
don’t perform it every opportunity I get.
I know many interesting ways to destroy a person’s spirit, to whittle
down there defenses until they are groveling at my feet, begging for mercy.” He
shrugged, “But for you I won’t bother with that, it’s much more fun to make you
sit and wait for your inevitable fate at my hands.” He said, chaining me to the
wall, “Enjoy your day, I’d get some sleep if I were you.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Your body will tell you when the sun has
risen; it may even drag you down without your consent.” He smiled and ran a
hand down my face, “Sweet dreams my dear.” With that he was gone.

Bowing my
head I waited for sunrise, waited for sleep, “Good night cruel fate.” I
whispered as I closed my eyes and fell into oblivion.
