Strange New Knowledge and a New Power

Rorie staggered over to a low rock wall and dropped heavily down on it. She was in a state of shock. “This must be why you never get to ask any of the students about the exam” she muttered to herself. Rorie had always thought that the sisters altered their halos memories after taking the exam.

At that moment Rorie felt a river of heat flow up her spine. It seemed to linger for a moment at the base of her skull and then roll lazily into her head. She tried to think but she couldn’t focus on anything. She slid off of the rock wall and hit the ground hard in a dream-like state. In her mind there seemed to be a light growing. No, not growing, pulsing. Inside the light she could see Ray’s face and she knew that Ray needed her. She saw a large river rushing in the background and a huge twisted tree curving up over Ray’s head.

Just like it had started Ray could feel the heat flow steadily out of her mind and back down her spine. She sat up and instantly tried to stand up. She knew what her vision had meant. Ray was in the maze too, and she needed her. She rose unsteadily to her feat and climbed up on the rock wall. She looked out into the maze and found what she was searching for. The river. She followed it downstream with her eyes and spotted a huge gnarled tree that seemed to be twisting up into the heavens. That was where she needed to go. She brushed off the seat of her uniform and started down the hill toward the tree knowing it would take hours, maybe even days to reach it. She just hoped Ray would still be there when she met her destination.

Ray:

Ray woke up on the ground. She knew where she was before she even opened her eyes. The roar of the river and the smell of fresh water gave her all the information she needed. She had been dreaming of this place for weeks. She knew why she was here and she knew that her best friends were here too. She just didn’t know where. Sitting up slowly she blinked her eyes. “Ok, so how am I supposed to know if it’s real this time?” she sighed. Her question was answered for her. She leaned back against a huge tree and closed her eyes again hoping the sounds of rushing water would help ease her tension.

Ray grimaced at a horrible smell. It seemed to be growing stronger by the moment and smelled something like rotten eggs and fish at the same time. She kept her eyes closed tight hoping it was just her imagination or some strange plant creating the awful scent. At the sound of a sloshing mud her eyes shot open. Looking around frantically she found what she was searching for. A huge beast was dragging itself slowly out of the river and up the bank towards her. Its huge yellow eyes were full of hunger and rage. And it was climbing out on huge claw-bearing slimy feet. The beast seemed to shimmer in the sunlight and it looked as if it was growing stronger with every strenuous step it took. It was moving faster and faster now towards Ray. She slowly slid up to standing with her back pressed against the huge tree. Not really believing what she was seeing. Suddenly a memory flashed through her mind. She was very small sitting on the bank of a river playing at making the water rise and fall and shoot up in small fountains. She could hear the other children playing nearby. Her sisters playing nearby. Her mother was standing in the distance singing in her beautiful voice. She was singing a children’s song that she had sung to them so many times before.

Rest well my babes
The Entity Rests
His beasts are sleeping
Tucked into their nests
The monsters of water
The monsters of air
Of fire and earth all rest in his lair
Rest well my angels
Sleep now my loves
The Striplings are at bay
Down deep in the muck

At that instant Ray knew that the beast coming towards her was a Stripling. It was one of The Entity’s monsters. They Guarded the barrier that kept the Realm of the Dead at bay. The only way one could be in the Middle Real was if the barrier had somehow been broken or torn.

“My magic can not fight you beast!” She screamed. She turned around and summoned her power. The wall of water lifted her higher and higher until she was at the top of the huge tree. She grabbed onto a limb and lifted herself on top of it. She could only hope that Striplings could not climb. “Where are you Rorie, where are you my sister?”
