In The Library
A/N: For those of you who do not know, a manga-ka is a writer of comics, or graphic novels. Manga is a Japanese comic, and the word ka at the end signifies the writer/creator of those manga.
Chapter 46 – In the Library
Sora sat flipping through the pages of a military magazine wondering if his threat not to go to the school would truly affect his parents’ view of him. He had no intention of not going, it had been his dream forever, to be someone, something, more than the son of an ex-actor and a manga-ka. There had to be more for him out there, there had to be a way to make a difference.
“Become a fireman,” came a soft voice from beside him.
Sora nearly fell out of his chair as he looked up from his seat in the library to see Rhapsody staring him directly in the eyes. With him sitting and her standing she barely had to look down into his eyes. He towered over the small girl and many times felt like a giant next to her and he was not even that tall.
“What?” he asked when he had his chair back in order and was straightening himself out as she sat down across from him at the table in the public library.
“Why do you not become a fireman?” she asked. “I always thought they were admirable, and they risk their lives for us, instead of going to war. Just as risky, but you still are with your loved ones.”
Sora watched Rhapsody place the books she was reading on the table. He smirked at the cover of one; a fireman was holding a woman in a smoldering embrace that made them both look like they would be consumed by the fires of passion instead of the one he was supposed to be putting out. Or maybe it was her flame that he was meant to put out. “Getting away from my loved ones is part of the reason I want to be some place else,” Sora admitted. “Besides, I could never look like the man on the cover of that book.”
Realizing which books was on top Rhapsody flushed a deep shade of red and hid the books under the table, though he had already seen them. “I never pictured you as the romance novel type,” Sora admitted to her. “I always thought you were the type of girl who read stuff about novas, just for the fun of it.”
Rhapsody smiled a secret smile. “I may be smart, but unlike your brother Link, I’m hardly a nerd.” She was so matter-of-fact that Sora nearly felt his jaw drop.
“Then what are you?” Sora asked daringly.
He saw something cross Rhapsody’s face that he hardly recognized and for a moment he hoped desperately she would answer that question with something terribly racy, but instead she said, “I would not go home any time soon if I were you.”
“What?” he was so taken aback by the change of subject he had to shift in his chair and lean forward just to make sure that he heard her right.
“Shai and Yuki stopped by the house just an hour ago, I left halfway through,” Rhapsody told him. “Darrke apparently felt to contrive himself from trouble he would tell on you, Harmony, and Shu about Ashe’s near-death experience.”
Sora’s jaw did fall open and he stared at her open mouthed for a full minute before trying to regain his composure, but he still felt dizzy and weak and had to take a moment just to breathe. After all that he still could only manage, “Shit.”
“Yeah…” Rhapsody offered no support, and he should expect none from her. This was her brother that they had lied about. Whether they were blood related or not Ashe and Rhapsody had been through enough together to still care about one another. He had to wonder what she thought now that she knew the truth.
“Why did you tell me?” Sora finally asked.
Rhapsody shrugged. “That was not my original intention,” she admitted, “but then I saw you sitting here and I could not keep it to myself. Maybe I just need to gossip. I might have told Tiera if she were sitting here, or just Waza.”
Something about her down-cast eyes set something off, gently, quietly, in the back of his mind. “Tiera told you I was here, didn’t she?”
Rhapsody sighed. “Yeah.”
“Why?”
Rhapsody shrugged again while Sora hoped for an honest answer, an answer he had been longing for all too long. She still did not give him the answer he wanted. “I called Shu as well, but I could not catch him at home and he seems to have left his cell phone off.”
“Why didn’t you call my cell phone?” Sora asked.
“You turned it off,” she pointed out.
Sora was the one who felt like flushing now. Why was he acting like a child around her? He was considering the marines yet he could not talk to a fourteen-year-old girl he had grown up with. A girl who had more of a backbone than he did. She had dealt with her brother raping her, and then had been molested, then raped, by a man she thought of as her uncle, a man she looked up to. And still she was looking out for others.
“You were the one who tried to help when you found out about Ashe,” she finally blurted out, looking towards the stacks of books instead of at his face. “You and Shu both knew, but you tried… and though I could not admit to it, something about it made me think it was my own fault, you had tried. So, here is my attempt to help you, though I can not bring you from trouble. Yuki is going to kill you either way, but we can postpone it.”
“Want to go to a movie?” Sora blurted out.
Rhapsody turned to look at him, sat up, piled her books in her hands and flatly said, “Sure,” then gave him a smile that made him decide he was doing the right thing. Before he went home and was killed, and forced to never speak to the Inperiarus again because of his awful behavior, he figured he was due one moment of happiness.
