Notes on November
Author's Note: These are in-progress, incomplete character descriptions and notes that form the basis for the stories November and August. Although some of the facts remain the same between November and August, the years do make a difference, and August may reference or contain some things that did not yet exist or occur in November. Likewise, some things which exist in November have (thankfully) been extincted or outlawed by August. Some information about certain characters or places has been excluded so as not to spoil either story.
Other than that, enjoy.

November
Year 56.
Roanoke, VA.
Approximate Timeline:
War Year 34: The draft is proposed
War Year 35: The draft is instated.
War Year 42: The war slows in most places.
Year 45: The Plague is released on military bases. It soon spreads. Jesse's mom is tested. She is sterile, and a hysterectomy is performed on her. Jesse is 12.
Year 52: Men begin to change.
Year 56: Jesse's change begins. He is in the midst of training.
Year 57: Havar changes.
About The World:
Post-catastrophe, the world has greatly consolidated, eradicating the boundaries of most small countries and merging regionally into mega-nations.
The U.S.A., Mexico, and Canada, for example, are merged almost entirely into one massive super-nation known as “The Union.”
Most of the states of Western Europe have followed suit (If you remember, Honesty was sent home with an A.W.N.S – Alliance of Western Nation States - diplomat).
The United Arab Emirates has expanded to include most of the peninsula, as far north as Turkey and east as Afghanistan - these have maintained the name "the Emirates." Greece & Cyprus belong to the Emirates.
Russia, China, and India have all taken over large swatches of adjacent territory, with Russia taking everything from Finland in basically a straight line (along the borders of Poland, Slovakia, Hungary) down to the Serbian coast. Bosnia & Herzegovina and Croatia are disputed territories.
Niger & Nigeria have taken over everything west of them as far as the Atlantic coast, and as far north as Western Sahara, the Cape Verde Islands included. This region, now the strongest in Africa, is known collectively as The Niger Delta.
The N.A.U. – Northern African Union is composed of most of the Northern African countries, as far south as Ethiopia and Somalia, but excluding those territories already owned by The Delta. Central Africa remains in dispute.
About Life in the Union:
Draft is instituted age 45 and below. Children are put into Academies, where they will be trained for trade work, military leadership, military enlistment, or (rarely) further science/humanities work or study.
The age of consent has been nationally lowered to 15, in response to increased allegations of statutory rape levied against Union officers.
In rural and some suburban areas, most of the houses have been abandoned and left to rot. The land's been cleared in some places, but in general, nature has been left to take its course, as maintenance requires manpower and time that the government cannot spare. However, some small towns have survived and are beginning to come back to life as some of the wealthier families build large homes in the mountains, etc.
About Being A Carrier:
Carriers generally give birth to male children; some babies are born carriers, but this is extremely rare. Most of the female embryos miscarry - all who survive are sterile. Boy carriers start the program at a sort-of-young age; there's no standard, as it's at the discretion of the parents; more specifically, the discretion of the father.
Carriers are required to register upon changing; once registered, they will be assigned to a local CEC and expected to report for programming.
About the CEC:
Classes Jesse Takes:
M: History, Arts, Cosmetology
T: Childrearing, Carrier Counseling
W: General Psychology, Literature
R: Cooking, Finance
F: Private Counseling.
Social Arts is added later (on Thursdays) as an umbrella class for etiquette and peer advisory.
Other than that, enjoy.
