kicked to the gutter - yet again

Time to watch the flames that is my writing career. Ha! Actually, get out your marshamallows. I’m exaggerating. But any rejection or lack of love, is still a kick in the chops. So I have been kicked to the curve once again. Apparently I am a dark, sad individual. There is money to be made if I could just write happy, sappy slashy romance. Damn…wish I could. I have strayed to the dark side of the force and I like it there….they serve cookies. Yummy.

So to those who want to attempt to get into print, here is another chronicle through email of my attempt to woo Dreamspinner Press into publishing my work. The number one key to remember – “give’em what and how they want it and let them have just that way” You are a penitent and you gotta be on your knees. (This makes it easier for them to kick in your teeth) Read submission guidelines and follow them, or you won’t even get through the door!!

This is what I originally sent to Dreamspinner Press.

• Working Title (series name if applicable)
That's what brothers do…

• Genre and manuscript length
Romance, estimated minimum of 48,000 words

(This summary was frickin’ difficult, considering it is only a couple of small paragraphs, it still took me a couple of hours and a couple of re-writes)

• General story description in two paragraphs.
Loan sharks in love. Wilber Brawden got an offer he couldn't refuse from a boy out to save his sisters from a fate worse than death. Brant became known as 'Cinderella' the top whore of the working world as he worked to clear his family's debt off the Organization's books. Once the debt was clear, the family found itself in financial straits yet again. This time, Wilber offered Brant a private loan in return for becoming his own private label.
Brant however had turned into a really well trained and in high demand whore in his time of working off the debt. Wilber begins to show him that there is more to life than just looking at the ceiling and that he has worth outside of a bedroom. Unfortunately, others within the Organization don't see Brant that way.

So it says on the submission page/guidelines that you be acknowledged as having sent them something. This is a good thing because then you know that your email got through. I waited for a month before contacting Yaoi House and then I found out that my submission had gone straight to junk and never got read. Gack. So it is up to YOU to follow up. If the publisher says they will contact you wait the stated period then take it upon yourself to follow up.

Dear Derekica,
Thank you for you submission. I have two questions upfront. One - is the manuscript complete? We only consider stories that are finished. I ask since you only have an estimated word count listed. Two - the file attached is marked with multiple edits and editor's comments. Did you send a draft copy by mistake?

Sincerely,
Elizabeth North

If you get my newsletter/snippet/story notification, (flagrant flogging here)I mentioned that they must have liked it to even ask for a clean copy. I mean, I should have been just chucked because I couldn’t follow instructions. At this time I rubbed my little yaoi hands together and did the chair dance of anticipation. (squeal and spin while kicking legs)

Dear Ms. North

Thank you for your response to my submission. I must apologize for the condition of the file I sent. I am having a heck of a time removing the tracking comments from the file. I thought this was corrected when I sent the file to Dreamspinner. I have attached clean chapters of one and two to this e-mail. I have switched to Word 2007 and things are just not where they should be...or where I think they should be.

The story, "That's What Brothers Do" is complete in ten chapters and is undergoing editing by an Internet friend. The total word count is 43, 594.

If you have any more questions, please contact me.

Then roof fell in.

Rikki,
The excerpt you sent was incredibly powerful, the writing clear and wrenching. I'm afraid the plot line is a little dark for our press. Thank you for the opportunity to review it. We would love to consider future manuscripts from you.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth

I was kind of expecting it. The advertisements that Dreamspinner Press has on AFF.net seems more like soft core harlequin with a manly bent. So…while my dreams didn’t come true with Dreamspinner Press, I still have self publishing open. I am a dark little monkey of yaoi portions.

While this last bit has absolutely nothing to do with the above, I actually called a radio show physic ( yeah. Yeah I know) and he did say that I would get published. He said he couldn’t live off the royalities, but my comments of him sounding high maintenance was not appreciated. Can’t stand a physic who has no sense of humor. :p Actually, I have been advised to get private backers and start my own publishing company. That has been rolling around in my skull, but not seriously enough to start looking into it. Options are open. The sky’s the limit. I will continue to send out my offerings. At least I know that my work is appreciated and I have fans here out in cyber land. So for the moment, I might be burn baby burn, but I’m learning and growing and I’m moving on up.

So, hope this helps someone, or at least get a good laugh out it.

Cheers.

Kiix
