Chapter 43 – Short and Sweet

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Shinwa looked up from his bowl of ramen, the poor man’s food and yet something celebrated and warm in the cold kitchen. He placed down his chopsticks steadily, his gaze never leaving Yuki, who sat across the table looking like she was about to burst. It had taken her hours to start speaking to him. She had not said a word since they walked in the apartment, she had ignored him with every question he asked, she had sat down to eat only because she never missed a meal, and now she looked as if she could not contain the hurt any longer.

“I was hoping to find another solution,” he told her calmly.

“And there wasn’t one?”

“No,” he answered honestly.

Yuki twirled her chopsticks in the noodles and water, not quite sure what she wanted to say or do. “Why did we go visit your family today? You seemed to have known it would not turn out well, why did you let me pressure you into seeing them?”

“I was hoping it would make it easier for you to understand why I have to take this job,” he explained calmly, wishing very much just to swallow the bowl of ramen and to forget the rest of the world existed. “I hoped, by seeing the situation I was in, you would understand my dilemma. They are my family, and I can not just abandon them, especially Lilis. She has no other choice but to depend on them. I wanted to separate from them, but family is not who you decide, it is by blood and nothing else.”

“I am surprised that your parents could send you to London.” She was baiting him, he knew it, he took the bait anyway.

“It was Kagome’s idea to send me to London to stay with Kyouteki, who was studying there,” Shinwa admitted. “She wanted me out of the house because I was too nosey and I was trying to not watch my parents’ marriage break up, but it happened anyway. They sent me away to stay with Kyouteki, and the rest you will hear about in any magazine.”

Yuki fell silent. There was not much else left to ask. She twirled the noodles on her chopsticks and took a large bite, chewing ferociously. Maybe if she thought about the food she would enjoy nothing else, but the questions burned at the pit of her stomach, as they often did.

“Do you love me?” she asked bluntly.

“Of course I do,” he admitted.

Yuki’s eyes filled with tears and Shinwa stood up to go to her. “Are we breaking up?” she asked as he reached her, wrapping his arms around her as she sobbed.

“No,” he told her. “Yuki, no matter how far I am, I will still be yours, and only yours. And I will be fighting my way back to you, I promise.”

Yuki nodded into his sleeve, leaving a wet tear-stain down his arm. Shinwa hugged her tight and carried her to the bedroom, laying her down on the bed. She looked up at him with those large grey eyes and asked, “When do you leave?”

Shinwa answered honestly, “The day after graduation,” and then covered her mouth with his. Yuki wrapped her arms around him and accepted the gift of him, for one more night, because no matter what, after this, things were not going to be the same.
