style='mso-tab-count:1'> When Rachel woke up she was feeling
weak and tired. Her leg was hurting a bit but the pain was numb and hardly
there at all. The throbbing on her head wasn’t so numb but it was being
overthrown by the burning sensation she was having in her stomach area. She
opened her eyes slowly as if she was afraid she would find herself on fire.
Instead of bright red flames she only found an arm. Moving only her eyes she
sought out to find who the arm belonged to. Not surprisingly she saw Gabriel
sleeping next to her. His arm was the only part of him touching her, which made
the situation creepy. Why did she have that burning sensation? She grabbed his
arm gently and placed it away from her. Instantly the burning sensation was
gone and she felt much better. Next to her he stirred and opened his eyes.
“Felling ok?” he
asked in a sleepy tone.
lang=EN-US>“Ye-yeah. Fine.”
She said uncomfortably.
“Good.” He said
and sat up.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He took a look at her leg and nodded.
“It’s going to
be all right. It’s going to leave a scar though.”
“I don’t care. class=GramE>As long as I don’t bleed to death.”
“You won’t.” he
said smiling.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> She didn’t find it very amusing especially
when he grabbed her leg to look at it from another angle and the burning
sensation returned.
“Something
wrong?” he asked letting go of her leg.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> She shook her head vigorously. What the
hell is this? She thought scared. Why do I get this sensation every time
he touches me?
“Want another
painkiller?” she heard him ask.
“Yes.” She
answered a bit too loudly. “Yes, please.”
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He got up to get some more water and she took
another pill.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> After a long moment of silence Rachel cleared
her throat.
“So, you lost
your parents when you were 10?”
“You were paying
attention?” he asked amused.
lang=EN-US>“Of course. I preferred listening to
you rather than take notice of the needle perforating my skin.”
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He smiled briefly.
lang=EN-US>“Yeah. They died in a car crash.”
“So you think it
was your fault?” she asked.
“No. It was the
guy driving the car that killed my dog. If he had stopped when my dog crossed
the street my parents wouldn’t have needed to pick me up.” He explained in a
tone that suggested he had giving this answer many times before.
“Ouch! Great
point you’re making there.”
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Gabriel simply sighed.
“What about you?
What’s your life story?” he asked a few moments later.
“Well I never
had a dog and I didn’t inherit a fortune but I also lost my parents.” She
stopped for a brief moment as if collecting her thoughts. “I was 8 years old
and my parents took me on their annual walk to the lake. Before heading to the
lake we went for a stroll in the city’s park. It was crowded and noisy. Nobody
heard anything different until a woman started screaming loudly and a baby
started crying. Everyone looked around to find out what had happened. There was
an old man sprawled on the floor with the tiniest hole in his forehead. People
started gathering around him and suddenly there was another scream and a second
person fell on the floor with the same hole. When the third body fell people
really started to panic and it was every man for himself.
Everyone except my mom and me because the third body had been my father’s.
While I was looking down at his body I felt this breeze in my face and I backed
away a second before my mom joined my father on the floor. I looked up and I
saw this man dressed in gray on top of a building. He had a big gun in his hand
and for a second I had the impression he was pointing it at me. So I ran as
fast as I could and hid behind a garbage can in an alley. When the police found
me it was already night and I was so scared I had to be carried out of there.”
She stopped again to clean her eyes.
“I’m sorry to
hear that. Did the police capture the guy?” Gabriel asked delicately.
“Yes, a couple
of days later.”
“Did you find
out why he killed your parents?”
“He didn’t kill
my parents for any reason. He was a psychic who bought a gun and decided to do
target practice with people in a crowded park. He killed randomly and for no
good reason. He killed 4 people and was sentenced to death.”
“Then what
happened?”
“I didn’t have
any immediate family so they sent me to a foster home. The Waters adopted me.
They couldn’t have children so they took me in gladly. I was happy to have
someone to call mom and dad even if they weren’t my real parents. I had a big
family because my foster dad had a brother and he had three kids. My father was
a carpenter and his brother was a police officer. My older cousin was in the
military and it was because of him that I learned how to use guns. When I
turned 18 I left and decided to dedicate myself to photography. Then I met my
current boyfriend, Danny, who left me to become a police officer. He’s
currently a detective.”
“You’re dating a
detective?” Gabriel asked dumfounded.
lang=EN-US>“Yeah. But he’s always too busy to
suspect anything weird about me. He hardly notices anything. For example I bet
he’ll never notice the scar in my leg.”
“Still, aren’t
you afraid he’ll find out?”
“Not really. class=SpellE>Wanna hear my story or not?” she asked annoyed.
“Sorry.”
“Anyway, last
year my foster father died of untreated cancer. A couple of months ago my
uncle, whom I love dearly, was diagnosed with the same type of cancer and the
money I’m paid isn’t enough to pay for a specialist so that’s why I resorted to
kidnapping.” She explained leaving out some facts.
“I see. You
kidnapped me so you can pay for your uncle’s treatment.”
“That’s pretty
much it, yeah.”
“Now why would
anyone want to kidnap me?”
“I don’t know.
I’ve told you that before.”
lang=EN-US>“All right.”
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> They looked at each other for a while before
Gabriel spoke again.
“I understand
why you’re doing this and I think being a photographer is a job like any other.
I’m being a complete jerk about all this but you have to understand my side.”
“I was never
kidnapped myself but I guess it must be hard for you. But you have to admit
you’re having it good.”
“I admit. You’re
being a great kidnaper.”
“Thank you.”
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> They laughed but stopped quickly. They found
themselves staring at each other again. Neither could deny there was an
attraction between them. Rachel felt the burning sensation again when his hand
touched her leg once more but this time it was less unpleasant. In fact it was
proving to be quite arousing. However it stopped when he got up and left the
room without a word. Rachel thought he would return soon with a tray with food
or something but it never happened. After a while she got up herself and went
to find him. He was sitting on the couch with his face hidden behind his hands.
“Gabriel?” she
called.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He dropped his hands and looked up at her. She
saw him get up slowly and gulped. He looked extremely desirable but she was
caught by surprise when he approached her. The moment his lips touched hers a
fire broke out inside her and the whole world disappeared around her. She didn’t
feel anything when he pushed her against the wall. She wouldn’t feel a thing
even if a thousand knives cut her. All she felt was his soft lips against hers,
his hot tongue fighting hers, his hands all over her back and his pelvis
against her. She needed to have him but this time with full consciousness. They
practically dragged each other back to the bedroom where they made love as if
the world was ending soon. Without any remorse.
