Down Fall of House Littoral
Recovery
Chapter 4- Recovery
Three weeks after Shaylee had been found in the woods she was finally up walking around, with a lot of help from Evander. Her resulting injuries had been plentiful. They had ranged from bruises and torn ligaments, to several broken ribs and dislocated joints in many areas. The minor bruises had faded away, but the worse bruises were still fading. The worst bruising, located on her abdomen and sides, were now just sickly yellow looking spots.
Evander spent most his days at the church studying as a Deacon. At night he tended to Shaylee and shared stories of their childhood.
"Tell me why Sir." Shaylee asks while eating dinner with Evander.
"Why what?" Retorts Evander.
"Why did you keep me around? I'm useless to you. Don't get me wrong, I owe you my life, but why do you really keep me?" Shaylee stops eating and glances up at Evander.
Evander stays silent for several moments, then pushing his plate away he looks Shaylee in the eyes. "At first, I saved you because of guilt, guilt of an action my people did to you. When I got you back here I was sure you weren't going to make it through. I spent every day praying to my God to guide you through and not let you die," a small tear rolls down Evander’s face. "So, when you woke, much to my family’s discouragement, I knew my God was telling me you had been fated to be my responsibility." He grins, quickly wiping the single tear away. "I believe my God wants me to help you heal and then teach you how to do great things with your life."
"You are too kind sir." Shaylee blushes but keeps eye contact. "I hope that one day I can pay back my life debt to you."
