Chapter Four
*Chapter Four*
I sighed as I stepped out of the library and stretched. I started walking down the hallway, but paused once I reached the old, unused bathrooms. I thought I heard a soft sobbing in the girls’ bathroom. I glanced at the moving camera and ducked into the bathroom when it was looking the opposite way.
I gasped and made a small oh noise when I saw Lisette starring into the cracked mirror, her black and grey striped shirt pulled up to reveal her pale stomach that was covered in ugly bruises. I could clearly see her delicate ribs. Was she starving herself?
My fists clenched and I ground my teeth. I took a step towards her. She spotted me in the mirror, yanked her shirt down, and whirled around.
“W-what are you doing in here?” she demanded in a whisper, her emerald eyes wide and her face deathly pale. A tear ran down her cheek.
“What the fuck happened to you?” I asked angrily. “Why are you so thin? Why do you have so many bruises?”
“I…” she averted her eyes. “I-it’s nothing.”
“Don’t lie to me!” I said with a low growl. She flinched and bit her lip. “Someone has been hurting you or you have been hurting yourself. What the hell is going on with you, Lisette? What’s wrong?”
She whimpered and wrapped her arms around herself tightly. Lisette began shaking like an autumn leaf in the wind. Tears ran down her cheeks and she fell to the floor on her knees. I bit my lip and walked over to her. I sat on my knees and wrapped my arms around her. I pulled her against me and she laid her head on my chest. I rubbed her back, murmuring to her. She cried steadily until she finally stopped, shaking silently.
“Lisette?” I asked softly. “Tell me what happened.”
She shuddered and then nodded. Lisette sat back on her butt and wiped her eyes. “J-jack has a really bad temper. He hits me sometimes. My father punishes me by hitting me too. He-he kicked me in the stomach last night. And I’m so thin because that’s my mother’s form of punishment. I have to stay a certain weight or under it or else I get in trouble.”
My jaw dropped and Lisette trembled at my expression. I shook my head. “How long has this been going on?”
“With Jack since we went on our second date. And with my parents…ever since middle school,” she said in a quiet voice. She pulled her legs up to her chest.
“Oh my...” I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. “Is this what you meant yesterday when you said you had already learned your lessons about defiance?” Lisette nodded. “Does anyone else know?”
“No,” she said and laughed bitterly. “Everyone thinks I’m just an innocent little rich girl who has a perfect, happy life and a perfect boyfriend who loves me dearly. They don’t know a damn thing about me.”
I winced slightly. I had thought that for a while. But then I saw how Jack treated her and I knew something was going on. “Why haven’t you told anyone?”
“No one would believe me,” she said tiredly and rested her head on her knees. “My father is a respected, well liked lawyer and my mother is a reputed, charming interior designer. Jack comes from one of the most prominent, respected families in the state.”
“Couldn’t you just move somewhere else? Away from them? You are eighteen,” I said, trying to find some way to save that innocent, beautiful angel.
“I don’t have access to my finances. And I don’t have anywhere to go,” Lisette said in a quiet, lost, broken voice that brought an overwhelming feeling of pity over me.
“You couldn’t stay with a friend? You have so many. Maybe one could help you?” I asked gently.
“Friends? Please. Those upper crust abominations would rather me be rich, beaten, and starved than poor and happy. They’re not my friends. I have very few actual friends and I wouldn’t want to burden them,” she told me.
“Burden them...?” My jaw dropped again.
The bell rang harshly and Lisette stood up.
“Please don’t tell anyone,” she said quietly and ducked out of the bathroom.
I jumped up and hurried out of the bathroom, but she had been lost in a sea of students.
“Lisette,” I whispered and then let myself be pushed along the hallway.
