1st person perspective

My arms and legs felt strangely heavy, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to know why. I opened my eyes slowly and peered around the room I was now in. There were beds lining the walls with little tables next to each bed that had vases with different types of flowers on them. I’m sure if I wasn’t mistaken, I was in a hospital. The question was, why? I wasn’t left for much longer with my thoughts as two figures bustled in, one with long lilac hair that was tied into a ponytail and the other with short blue hair that seemed to be in constant disarray, both of them wearing what seemed to be doctors coats, confirming my hospital theory. Following them was a young man being held up by what would be his two friends with orange hair, each of them bearing a kind of indifferent expression on their faces.

“How long is it going to take for him this time?” one of the males asked as they rested him on the bed opposite mine. The doctor with long lilac hair spoke with a silky deep voice

“Most likely it won’t take too long. He seems to be getting better at dodging.” I looked on in awe as a ball of water suddenly appeared around the lilac haired doctor’s hand and he moved the boy‘s shirt to reveal a rather bad burn across his chest.. The short haired doctor turned to face me and a smile lit up her features as she saw me awake.

“Look who’s up Regis.” she moved over to me while Regis cast a brief glance in my direction making a non-committal grunt before turning back to his burnt patient. The two boys turned to me out of curiosity and I noted that their features were too similar for them to simply be related. “How are you feeling?” the girl asked placing a hand on my forehead. I pulled my eyes away from the twins and looked at her properly for the first time. Her eyes were a very pale grey, almost white, and there seemed to be a constant breeze around her… which would account for her hair being in its disarray. I closed my eyes for a moment and tried to put my thoughts in order before I answered her question.

“I’m fine I guess… just wondering how I got here.” I opened my eyes and her hand moved along the side of my face and saw her smile

“Ayden and Kaori brought you here after you passed out.” she replied moving her hand and opening a drawer in the table to my right “My name is Camille by the way.” she continued as she rummaged inside for something. I began to feel a bit uneasy but she pulled out a small rectangular book and rested it on the table top for me to see the cover. I kept my eyes on her for a while as she went back to the others and was amazed at the progress made on the burns.

“Would he need to rest or anything, cause I’m sure he’s just gonna want to go back and try to beat her yanno?” the second twin asked. Regis and Camille thought for a bit before answering in near synchronization.

“Let him get some rest. We don’t want him back in here before tomorrow.” I pushed myself up on my elbows and glanced over at the book on the table. It was red with gold trimmings and an intricate design of flowers in gold and silver along the front. I reached over and picked it up tentatively, shocked at how warm it felt. I heard a heavy groan and looked up as the burn patient sat up and rubbed his chest.

“Michelle is such a pain.” he groaned “I’m gonna beat her one day.”

“You say that every time you wake up her you know Jake.” Camille said producing a needle out of nowhere. I squirmed at the sight of the liquid filled syringe topped with the sharp metal point that sinks into flesh and tried to pull myself away from her. “This should keep you from feeling any excessive pain.” she said as he gave a sigh and raised his other hand to brush back his brown hair as he got stabbed. When she withdrew the needle she flashed him a charming smile while Regis cleaned the wound and she destroyed the syringe and needle. I pulled back even further trying to comprehend exactly why I was were I was. The book in my hand got, if possible, warmer and I looked down at it curiously before opening the cover. The first page was black and had silver writing in a language I didn’t understand, but felt like I should. ‘Just what am I?’ I wondered, jumping as the door closed loudly, leaving me alone with the two doctors. I looked warily at Camille hoping she wouldn’t decide I needed an injection as well. Regis came up to me and checked my vitals quickly before getting an official looking file and writing a few things on it with a pen he pulled out of his inner pocket. He didn’t seem like one to inspire conversation so I turned my attention back to the book.

“Do you know why you’re here?” Camille asked suddenly from the foot of my bed. I looked at her and shook my head as Regis left the room for something. She got thoughtful for a moment before jumping over the little railing at the foot and landing sitting Indian style at my feet. “So you don’t remember what happened to you.” she said cautiously.

“I remember being in school, then home…” I said after a moment of thought. “But it gets really fuzzy after that…” she nodded and sighed looking at the open book in my hands

“‘To the child of fire, may you find wisdom in these pages’” she said causing me to look down then back up.

“What?”

“That’s what it says.” she shrugged while I looked back at the words trying to figure out how she saw that from the words on the page.

“Where is here?” I asked finally

“Here,” she motioned in a vague direction outside “Is Sierra. The land of the angels.” I turned away

“And what about my friends? My life?” I looked back at her “I didn’t have a say in this.” Regis came back at this time and raised an eyebrow at Camille’s position but said nothing about it.

“It looks like we can send you on your way soon.” he said resting the chart down on the table. “Luckily for you I think, there have been several people willing to take you in until you get to your feet.” he glanced at Camille

“I take it that doesn’t happen very often?” I straightened my sitting position and took a breath.

“Not really. But you’re interesting to say the least.” Camille said shrugging “We don’t get many fire angels so people are curious.” I raised my eyebrows and rolled my eyes

‘Great. I’m in a place I’d rather not be, and people already have expectations of me.’ Camille got off the bed and walked over to my side and extended a hand to me.

“We need you to get some practice on your legs before you go outside.” I looked at her incredulously

“Just how long have I been in bed?”

“Three days, seven hours and twenty-three minutes.” Regis said immediately. I refused to look at him. Instead I took Camille’s hand and allowed her to guide me off the bed. As soon as my bare feet touched the ground I nearly went into shock at how cold it was.

“Shit that’s cold.” my feet were back in the warmth of the bed sheets before she even had time to crack a smile at my outburst.

“Sorry about that.” she chuckled as she went to the cupboard at the far side of the room and opened it to reveal an assortment of clothes and shoes. It was only then I looked down at what I was wearing.

“What the-?” this was not what I was wearing… what was it? Four days ago?

“You didn’t expect us to leave you dressed in those clothes for the entire time you were sleeping did you?” she asked coming back to me with a pair of red and blue socks and boots that matched the flame designed outfit I was wearing. I ran my hand across the button-down shirt that seemed to be tailored to fit me. She moved me so that my feet were hanging off the edge of the bed, but not touching the floor, and slipped the socks on my feet. I looked down at her and had to admire the careful way she dealt with me, but with a hint of resentment

“Are you one of the ones who want to take me in?” she looked at me with a hint of mischief behind her grey eyes

“Is it that obvious?” her half smile made me chuckle.

“I didn’t think you were actually trying to hide it.” she slipped the boots on and stood up giving me her hand again.

“Well, I kinda was and kinda wasn’t. but you’ll get to see the rest of your fans when we get to the hall.” I took her hand and tentatively put my weight on the floor, not afraid to feel the cold again, but afraid I might topple over from the lack of muscle use. She caught me as I wavered in my balance and set me right again. “You’ll get used to it.” she stated as she helped me walk around the hospital room. After a while I looked around for the lilac haired Regis and found he was missing.

“Hey… where did-”

“He has other people to see about. Most of them being half angels and newbies.” she replied before I could finish my question “You have something against needles?” she asked suddenly causing me to tense and try to move away from her automatically. “I take that as a yes. And don’t worry I won’t give you a shot.” she laughed holding onto my arms a bit more firmly.

“Why did you ask then?” I demanded pulling away from her, satisfied when I didn’t have to hold onto anything. She chuckled

“Well you seemed so adamant when I was giving Jake his, I was just a little curious.”

“Oh…” I looked away and tried to find something that could hold my attention for more than a few seconds when she took my hand and I found it. ‘Was her hand always this soft?’ I flexed my fingers around hers and ignored the smile that was beginning to play on her features.

“But I thought you would have more questions than the meager few that you asked so far.”

“Fine, I’ll bite… Why am I here?” I asked looking at her smugly. She rocked back on her heels and folded her hands across her chest.

“To train.” she replied simply, looking just as smug. I pursed my lips and looked away feeling had

“Can you elaborate please?” she gave me a smile and held out her hand again. Without thinking, I took it and she pulled me to sit on one of the beds.

“You are an angel.” she began. It wasn’t a question so I just went with it. “All angels, when we learn about our powers have two choices, after they’ve gained a control over their powers. One is to stay here and help with the war and protection of the barrier, and Two, is to go on earth and live their lives protecting humans from the demons.” I nodded not looking at her. “There are of course some exceptions…”

“There always are.” I muttered. She went on as though I said nothing.

“Some angels aren’t suited for life on Sierra, so they are simply sent back to earth, where as there are some angels who are supposed to stay to help the barrier grow and strengthen.”

“What happened to the fire angels?” I asked, suddenly remembering the voice in my house. I couldn’t remember much else, which was driving me insane on the inside, but it struck me that he mentioned fire angels… or was it fires. I looked back to her and saw the discomfort there.

“What happened to the fire angels would be better explained by someone other than me… sorry.” she said finally. I looked at the boots for a long moment and sighed.

“Why me?” I whispered looking to the door. She slipped her hand in mine again and allowed her thumb to stroke a line along the back of my hand, leaving a cool trail where she touched.

“Let’s go. I’ll introduce you to some other angels.” she said getting up and not letting go of my hand. I looked at her and gave a small smile and followed her lead, going out the door and into an unfamiliar place…

~~~~~
My senses were assaulted by a depth of colors and sounds that I was not used to. Everything had this aura of beauty to it that was simply unreal. Camille chuckled next to me “You’ll get used to it.”
“I don’t think I want to.” I replied. Her smile dimmed briefly and she got a strange expression on her face when I said that, but when I asked what was wrong she simply shook her head. What actually shocked me the most, was how much it resembled earth with such major differences. One of them being the fact that the roads were mainly used by pedestrians with the fact that they didn’t have vehicles barreling down the streets and polluting the air. Another thing that stuck me was the plants… they were everywhere. Strategically placed in such a way I began to think that a landscaper arranged it all so that it looked more like a picture than anything else. It took about ten minutes to reach the hall from the hospital and I was feeling slightly sad that the walk was so short. As Camille pushed the door open I caught a sly grin on her face.
“What?”
“The first time I truly appreciated the beauty of this place, I found that all the walks I took were just too short too.” she replied and motioned for me to come inside. I slipped in, taking one last look outside before she closed the door. Then I saw the intricacies of the architecture and gasped. “I did take you as one to appreciate art.”
“I can’t draw for crap.” I said, my eyes roaming the walls from the door while I began turning on the spot. The molding on the wall was flawless and I began to wonder how it was even possible to get the kinds of designs I was seeing and still have the walls intact. I was still staring in wonder when a soft hand made its way into mine yet again and with a gentle tug, had me moving through the corridors to another well decorated door. She paused for a moment before pushing this door too and allowing me to get inside. I pulled myself out of the awe for this room; only taking the time to note that there were several couches and tables scattered around the room in what could be called slightly haphazard, but seemed to be more of an ordered chaos, as well as an ornate fireplace on my right and windows that showed more of the nature/buildings, which grabbed my attention briefly, before I noticed the people within the room. It took me less than a minute to express my displeasure visually as I recognized three of the faces in the room. Kaori cringed slightly and looked away muttering something I didn’t quite catch to Michaël while Ayden stood at the other end of the room to them looking out the window. My eyes roamed the room after a moment of glaring, giving only cursory glances to the other angels in the room pausing only to notice the more random hair and eye colors. My heart stopped momentarily when my eyes froze on one particular girl. Her sky-blue eyes were focused on the flickering flames that were casting shadows across the contours of her face and in her hair that made her sitting on one of the few armchairs surreally picturesque. Time seemed to slow as she turned her head, ever so slightly, and regarded me and Camille still by the door. All at once, time picked back up and I heard a voice welcome us and usher us to take a seat. My eyes were still fixated on the girl in the armchair though.
“I’m sure you have at least a few questions though.” the voice said as I managed somehow to get a seat.
“Apart from how I could possibly be an angel… what happened to the fires.” I said turning to the man who had spoken. He blanched at my bluntness and made a small laugh and shook his head before looking to Ayden.
“Maybe we could start with introductions.” I began to wonder just what happened to the fire angels to get the constant evasive responses I kept getting. My imagination was not painting a pretty picture in that respect. “I’m Richard, the girl in the armchair before me is Melissa.” my eyes riveted to her again as she raised her hand slightly in greeting, a warm smile now playing on her features making me hold my breath as he continued. “The orange haired twins you may have seen in the hospital if you woke up while they were there are Micah and Joshua, I still can’t tell which is which when they aren’t talking.” he motioned somewhere to my left and I turned and saw the twins from earlier with cocky grins on their faces. “Michelle is behind you.” I twisted slightly to see the green haired beauty giving me a kind smile “And you should know Camille, Michaël, Ayden and Kaori.” I let out a quiet growl at the sound of the last three names which earned a restrained laugh from Camille.
“Cool, names have been said, I’m sure you all know who I am… are you going to answer my questions?”
“You have a very focused mind, don’t you.” Melissa observed, her smile seemed to get a little brighter as she fixed her hair behind her ear only to have it come loose again. I felt heat rise to my face as I turned away.
“You can be an angel by any number of ways.” Michaël said softly. “You could have been gifted at birth by an angel. One of your parents could have been an angel, both of them could have been… the elements could have come to you, or you could simply have the spirit of an angel within you.” I blinked a few times and tried to figure out which category I might fit into.
“If it was the spirit thing, I would have the memories of the past life wouldn’t I?” I asked causing them to give me weird looks. “What did I say?” Camille put a hand on my arm and giggled
“It’s just that the few others who asked that question and got that answer never came up with that idea… it’s unusual for someone who grew up solely on earth to actually perceive something like that.”
“Uh, huh… okay then…” I rolled my eyes, but felt a little better when I asked for the third time “So, what happened to the fire angels?” I was again greeted with hesitation and I took a steadying breath as my irritation at their unwillingness to divulge the information. “I am going to come up with a shit-load of gruesome things that happened if you guys don’t tell me soon.” Ayden suddenly turned to me and said
“We are not very proud of what happened to the true fire angels, thus we rather not speak about it.”
“And that means you have an entire generation that is ignorant of what happened to an entire sect of angels…” I countered “Something that you seem to be comfortable with. Hide the truth and maybe it won’t happen again… maybe that’s the reason the barrier’s getting weaker.” without warning I was on the floor and my face was now stinging sharply as the resounding slap echoed in my ears. I put my hand to my aching right cheek in shock before I whirled on him again. “That’s right, slap me. Because you know what I’m saying is true and you don’t’ want to admit it!” my voice raised, I was on my feet and my hands were clenched into fists. My body thrummed with power and the sting from the slap I received was but a memory.
“Easy there tiger.” Michelle’s voice came from behind me and I felt her hand on my shoulder and almost instantly calmed down.
“I thought you were the tiger though Mish.” Melissa said putting a hand on Ayden’s shoulder. I didn’t realize how much the room had changed in the few short moments between me being slapped and fuming mad. Everyone was on their feet and prepared to either fight or run it seemed. I shook my head for a bit and looked at Ayden who was regarding me in shock while his hand was now at his side.
“My apologies… my temper ran away with me for a moment.” I sighed and sat back down.
“So what? You killed the fire angels or something?” I turned my attention to the walls as I spoke, no longer showing any real interest into what happened to the fire angels… although what had happened just now… and back at home… if I was a fire angel (and I was beginning to think that I was more and more) then… the cause of the fire seventeen years ago could have been…
Silence stretched in the room for an uncomfortable period of time causing me to look up and at the faces around me. They all looked uncomfortable which made me think I hit the nail on the head. My jaw slipped open and I looked away and whispered too softly, I thought, for any of them to hear me “Why?” one of them came and sat next to me and let out a light sigh.
“The elders at the time thought that the fire angels, especially the children, were far to dangerous to simply try to live in peace with the others. If a child lost their temper, they usually let loose a natural disaster… and in the case of fire angels, the results were usually devastating. Granted that didn’t mean that they needed to slaughter innocents, but that’s the way things happened.” while Melissa was talking I found flashes of truth passing before my eyes. I saw a woman with hair that moved like fire cradling a child and running through the streets and along an almost hidden path. The woman walking into an ornate temple, groves all along the floor and unlit torches along the circular wall. A firry portal opening and a few word spoken in an ancient tongue changing the hair of the child from the flaming red and blue to a simple brown and the eyes lost the red glow to be exchanged for and earthly green, before the child was sent through the portal. From there the vision split. The woman closed the portal and smiled sadly, while the little girl was in the middle of a burning room…
I felt a hand on my shoulder, pulling me away from what I was seeing before I saw what happened to the woman as what seemed like a battalion burst into the room. I jumped and looked at Melissa in shock. I was breathing heavily and feeling strangely cold. Looking back I saw Ayden moving away from me.
“What happened to you just now?” she asked tilting her head to see into my eyes as I looked down. I bit my lip and suppressed a sad smile
“I think… I just saw my mom…” I whispered still not feeling sure of myself.
“What do you mean you saw your mom?” Kaori had found herself at my feet out of curiosity and I pulled away and tried to figure out how to explain it.
“‘Saw’?” Ayden’s and Michaël looked at each other with raised eyebrows.
“It… kinda felt… like when I usually zoned out on earth… I just got a clearer picture this time…” I looked at Melissa then Kaori and shrugged.
“So you see things?” Melissa clarified. I nodded
“It happens randomly, do I don’t know when it’s gonna happen.” I replied, “But… if she was really my mom… she did it to save me…” I looked down and tried to bring her face back to my mind hoping above all hope that she really was my mom…
