Chapter Four

“Wait! Listen…I think I hear his heartbeat” Mickey gasped, and they all fell silent, Miriam leaning over Calom’s still body and listening intently. “Yes! It’s faint and struggling but it’s there” she confirmed, grinning up at them all in her relief. Jeremy gathered his brother close and stood up. “Russell, Midge, Mickey…clean up please, we’ll get Cal back to the hotel. Miriam, you go through the front and go up to the fire exit door, we’ll use the fire escape ladders round the back” he instructed quietly, and turned to run off through the woods, carrying his brother like a child.

Miriam and Elliot glanced at each other before following, and soon they were back in Calom’s hotel room, where Miriam cleaned his wounds and tucked him into bed. “He should already be healing, the silver had just been preventing that until I took it out” she commented as she looked down at Calom’s serene face.

“Thank you” Jeremy whispered gratefully, wrapping his arms around her and resting his chin on her shoulder. Elliot stepped forwards from where he’d been leaning against the wall, “I can take care of him, you guys should get some rest” he suggested, eyeing Miriam’s belly that bulged underneath her red shirt. They nodded and looked one last time over at Calom before leaving. Elliot locked the door after them and then picked up his blood-soaked jacket, lifting it to his face and breathing in the scent of Calom, and an echo of his earlier pain shot through him for a brief moment.

He tossed the jacket aside and sat down on the edge of the bed beside the younger male, taking hold of his hand and watching his sleeping face for a while until his eyes began to droop. “Goodnight Cal” he whispered, leaning over in order to place a kiss upon Calom’s forehead, but stopped before his lips could connect with the soft skin. With a huff he pulled away and walked over to his own bed, undressing and flopping down onto it with a scowl.

Two days passed, and on the morning of the third day, Calom opened his eyes. He sat up slowly, feeling his chest give a slight twinge, and then managed to stand up and stumble over out onto the balcony to gulp some fresh air, clad in just his boxers.

He turned and went back inside, leaning against the wall when he felt suddenly light-headed. “Cal? What are you doing out of bed?” Elliot asked as he came out of the little en suite bathroom, hair damp but he was fully clothed. “I needed to stretch my legs and get some air, is that a problem?” he snapped, sending a glare over his shoulder at the taller male. Elliot smiled, never had been so happy to hear that bitter tone again. He walked over and pulled Calom into his arms, burying his hand in his hair to hold the small teen’s head to his chest. At first, Calom was frozen with shock, and then he realised how nice and warm it felt being held so lovingly, so gently. Reality soon caught up with him though, and he shoved Elliot away with a dark scowl, “What the hell are you doing? Don’t touch me”.

“I’m just glad you’re alright” Elliot said quietly, watching as Calom sank back down onto his bed and pulled the covers over himself. “Yeah, well, thanks for your concern and all but I don’t need you to squeeze me to death” Calom replied and turned onto his side, back to Elliot, who just shook his head and hurried out to inform their Alpha. Jeremy was soon rushing into the room, kneeling next his brother’s bed and smiling happily at him. The smile faded however, when he just received an icy stare in return.

“Look, I’m sorry Calom, I needed to assert my authority in front of the others. Please, forgive me. It was something that had to be done, and you know I hated to hurt you” Jeremy murmured, standing up and backing up a few steps. Calom didn’t reply, he just rolled over so he wouldn’t have to face him. Miriam tugged at her mate’s arm, and gestured for them to leave, “We’ll come back later, let’s take the pack out hunting ” she said softly, and guided Jeremy back to their own room. Elliot watched them leave and then listened to their movements until they’d left the hotel. He then tried to talk to Cal, who remained silent for the rest of the evening.

Calom waited patiently for Elliot to fall asleep, and then he took his chance at packing away his clothes and essentials, getting dressed and slipping on his converse boots. He then sneaked over to the door, turning the lock and glancing over his shoulder only to find Elliot standing there, watching him.

“Where you going?” he was asked, and it was all he could do not to roll his eyes. He backed away from the door and dumped his bag on the floor, knowing Elliot would stop him if he tried to open the door. “I was leaving. I’m sick of this place, I want to be alone” he answered, giving his roommate a bitter smile. All he wanted was to be free of his brother’s rule, to be able to do as he wished, and not have to see Elliot ever again, and maybe then the weird dreams and feelings would fade away.

“You know I can’t let you leave, Jeremy would kill me” Elliot said, a coldness to him that surprised even Calom. “Even if it means staying up all night, I’m going to make you sure you don’t go anywhere”.

“Ah yeah, that’s right, I forgot what a kiss-ass you are. Always running to Jeremy, always doing everything he says, always following him around like a little lapdog” Calom sneered, sinking back down onto the edge of his bed and folding his arms across his chest. Elliot didn’t respond, instead he cocked his head to the side and his nostrils flared.  “What is it?” Calom asked, his senses dulled for the time being. Before Elliot could say anything, the door was banged open, and silenced weapons were aimed inside, silver bullets spraying everywhere, some catching Elliot, spinning him around on the spot. Calom dived on him, bullets zipping passed his head as he pushed Elliot onto the balcony to crouch behind the wall. He dug out the few bullets embedded in Elliot’s shoulder and leg, chucking them onto the floor with a hiss of pain as they burned his fingers.

When the onslaught of bullets died away, Calom waited a minute before he got up and peered round at the open doorway, finding it empty. He dragged Elliot back inside and left him on the floor as he gathered up his and Elliot’s wallets and passports, and found his bag full of holes. With an angry growl, he chucked the bag on the floor, and turned to see Elliot standing up, holding his shoulder.

They hurried to the other rooms, finding the doors caved in, and collected what they could into bags that were still in on piece. “Let’s get out of here” Calom urged  his roommate out the door and down the hallway to the lifts. As they were going down, Calom took a look at Elliot’s wounded shoulder and leg, finding they were slowly beginning to heal. “If the bullets had been left in any longer, you’d be struggling to heal now. Good job you’re wearing all black ” he commented, sniffing at the blood that stained Elliot’s clothes. He stiffened when Elliot put a blood-caked hand on his cheek and planted a light kiss on his forehead, “Thanks” he whispered, and then stepped away, looking a little embarrassed. Calom blinked up at him and then cleared his throat, looking anywhere but at Elliot, “No problem” he mumbled, and then silence descended upon them until the lift reached the ground floor, and the doors opened with a ‘ding’.

Elliot dug his hands into his pockets and kept his head down as they walked through the lobby and out of the doors. The receptionist barely glanced in their direction as she chatted to a fellow worker, who was leaning on the desk and trying to take a peek down her blouse.

“They sure am gonna be pissed when they see our rooms” Calom muttered with a little smirk as they hurried down the dark streets to find the others. Elliot chuckled and glanced back down the road, “We need to get out of this town fast. Jeremy won’t be happy, he won’t be able to use the credit card he paid with, otherwise the police will track us”. Calom wasn’t feeling so very sympathetic for his brother at the moment, so it didn’t worry him in the slightest.

They bumped into the pack walking up the street, looking tired. “We got attacked by guys with guns, we need to leave” Elliot informed them in a hushed voice as they huddled together. Jeremy frowned and glanced at his mate’s stomach, which she rubbed absently in agitation. “Who would attack us in a public place like that?” Russell asked, sounding eager for some action, but confused about why it was happening. Elliot shrugged and stayed close to Calom’s side as explained what had happened to them in better detail, while Jeremy listened intently and then growled angrily, “They must be hunters. I haven’t come across any in so long I started to relax…we must not have been cautious enough in the last town”.

They all fell silent, worrying about what to do next. “Maybe we should just leave, get the cars and go before they come back and try again” Miriam suggested, fear making her voice shaky. Jeremy pulled her close and kissed her head, “Don’t worry so much sweetheart, we’ll be fine. Calom, you take Midge and Miriam in the car and go on to the next town, while we deal with them”.

“You can’t do that! Four of you against a bunch of hunters with silver bullets? Are you insane? At least let me stay to help, the more the better!” Calom protested instantly, shrugging off Elliot’s hand on his shoulder when he attempted to pull him away and guide him towards the hotel car park. Jeremy sighed, knowing full well Calom would protest, but he shook his head, “No Calom, we need to deal with them now otherwise they’ll just keep following and try and take us by surprise. You need to go with the girls because you’re not at your full strength, but you can at least provide some protection for Miriam. Go now, no more arguing Cal”.

Calom ground his teeth to keep from protesting, and obeyed by turning and storming off towards the car park, Midge and Miriam following after swift farewells. Jeremy waited until he saw Midge driving the car past them, noticing Calom’s eyes lingering on Elliot as they went by. “I think he’s actually worried about you” he murmured, smiling a little before turning and heading back into the woods.

They quickly shifted into their more beastly forms and began to howl, letting the hunters know they were still around and hoping they’d take the bait.
