Chapter 4
Chief Jason continued, "Before you leave, however, you will light your fire. As soon as you feel it is burning well, you may start down the trail alone. Your mentor will stand by to watch your fire die out. When it is no longer burning, he will take on down the trail after you. However, if he catches you before you get to the campsite, then you will not be permitted to join the tribe tonight. You must wait until the sun sets tomorrow night. Instead of spending tonight in the longhouse with the rest of the tribe, you will have to stay with your mentor in his teepee and do whatever he tells you, to show you are truly worthy."
Chucky frowned. He liked Ollie a lot and wouldn't mind spending a night in his teepee and of course he'd always do what Ollie told him. However, he really wanted to prove himself. He wanted to pass the test tonight and not wait a whole extra day. He hoped he could get to the campsite without Ollie catching up to him. He figured that wouldn't be a problem. He could outrun the teen, especially since he'd have a good head start. And he thought he knew his trail signs very well.
"Let me repeat. If you get to the campsite alone, then you will join the tribe at tonight's campfire. But if your Mentor Brave catches you first, you must wait until tomorrow. Do you understand?" Again, the boys nodded but not so enthusiastically.
"One last warning, Boys. Danger lurks along the trail." The five youngsters looked at each other confused, but no other explanation was given.
"All right, Braves, give these boys their flints and knives." Ollie reached into his pouch and tossed Chucky the two items. He caught the flint and picked up the knife and skidded over to his twig teepee. Along with his four companions, he began striking the flint and steel together. At his practice sessions, he'd become very adept at fire starting, but now he was nervous. He got lots of sparks but couldn't get his tinder to catch. He looked at the other boys who were trying just as furiously and with no more success. He dared not look at Ollie. He wanted to show how well he'd been taught. He hoped the other Braves weren't laughing at him. Suddenly he saw Jackie had a flame. His tinder had caught and was burning away. Jackie jumped up and ran to the trail and disappeared. Chucky was jealous but he wondered why Jackie hadn't taken the time to blow on the fire and make sure the twigs caught. Chucky kept trying to get his own fire lit. Suddenly, a scream was heard coming from the woods. Chucky remembered the Chief's warning, "Danger lurks along the trail."
Just then, Chucky's fire caught. So did Conan's. Chucky glanced over at Jackie's flame. It was petering out. Jackie's mentor, Norman, stood over it. None of the twigs had caught the flame and when the tinder burnt out, the fire died. Quickly, Norman chased after his student. Chucky doubted Jackie could get to the campsite before getting caught. He was determined not to let that happen to him. As anxious as he was to get on his way, he took the time to make sure his fire was burning well. Conan jumped up and started running. The other two boys, Quentin and Ricky, now had glowing tinder. Chucky decided he had a good fire going and he shouldn't wait any longer. He saw Ollie's moccasins. The mentor had come to watch his fire and wait for it to die. Chucky hoped he had a long wait and stood up to leave. Just then another scream came from the woods. It was Conan.
