The K9 stopped a short distance up the mountain; something told him that something bad was going to happen. He had grown to trust his inner alarm since it had saved his life before. He tried to run faster, but the further away he got the stronger the feeling got. He looked down on the cottage from the distance and the rain of lightning a distance further away. It seemed like it was moving closer to the cottage too. Whoever was being attacked or emitting the lightning was getting close to the kind host of the past few days. Part of him wanted to run, but another part told him to stay and fight for her.
She watched them approach from the woods. "I WARN YOU COME NO FURTHER. STEP HERE AND DIE A DEATH UNKNOWN." she looked at the fellow witch. "EVEN YOU."
The old woman stopped when she saw what book she held in her arms. It was ancient and powerful. Few could hold it let alone cast from it.
"You know this book; you know what its pages hold. I say this once turn back now."
He saw the old lady was distracted and he sneaked up from behind, when he was close enough he sprinted at the old lady and jumped through the air, grabbing the totem from her fingers before taking off in to the woods again. The men with weapons opened fire at their target.
She smiled at the actions of the dog. When the men fired she threw up a quick barrier around him to protect him.
"It would seem you are a bit defenseless now." She let go of the book and it floated in front of her, its pages flipped quickly then stopped. She held her hands out towards the candles and flame leapt to her hands. She chanted a new spell, the fire arched high on her hands. "The choice is yours leave or burn"
The leader of the men in black looked at the old lady, hoping she could pull a rabbit out of her hat.
The old woman looked at him, then turned and ran. She relied upon her totem to protect and cast with. This one who stood on these grounds was pure magic of a pure line. She could call demons to her aid if she needed. She smiled when she saw the old woman run. She turned her attention to the men.
The men looked at each other and ran after the old lady. But before the leader ran, he turned to the woman. "We will get what we came for" then he took off too.
She waited until she was sure they were gone then sighed heavily. The flames disappeared, candles went out, and she grabbed the book as it began to fall. She then smeared the circle line to break the barrier she was behind, stepping out of the circle. She looked around as the sky cleared and the wind returned to normal. She felt drained and tired; slowly she made her way to the cabin and sat down in her chair on the porch.
The K9 came back and placed the totem on her feet. It would appear that she had proven herself to be a good protector of this place, so staying here until his wound is healed would be the best to do. So he walked back inside and lay down on his spot in the corner.
She smiled. "Thank you." She picked up the totem and looked at it. With it she could cast a spell on it owner but instead she tucked it into the blanket that she wrapped back around her book. She walked back inside and placed everything back into it chest, then pushing it back under the bed. She leaned against her bed, she hated using so much of the magic it tired her so much. She pulled herself up onto her bed and immediately closed her eyes. "Just a small nap to recharge."
The K9 also went back to sleep, he wasn't really tired but he could still use the sleep to heal faster.
Instead of just a nap she did not awaken until the next morning. She let out a loud groan as she moved, her body was sore and stiff from sleeping in the position she had been in most of the night. Her stomach rumbled loudly. Sitting up she wiped the sleep from her eyes and yawned. "My goodness I slept all night." Stretching again trying to loosen up her muscles, she stood and walked to the cold fireplace. She poked at it finding some embers still hot and used it to start another fire.
Her movement woke up the K9, his blurry eyes opened a few times in an attempt to remove the blurriness. A yawn and stretch followed as he stood up to shake a little. He walked out the door to answer natures call.
Once she had the fire going she went to her pantry pulled out some wild oats she had harvested, put them in small pot added water then put it by the fire to cook. Once done she went outside, to answer her own natures call, then went to the pond to wash her face and hands. The cold water helped remove the last cobwebs that remained. Going back in, she stirred the small pot.
After doing his thing he had come back to the cabin and returned to lie in his corner. His leg itched and it was staring to get quite annoying.
She saw him lick and bite at the bandage. "Will you let me take that off?” she approached him slowly, her hand going to the bandage. "It’s healing so it must itch. I have some salve I can apply to it that will help."
He moved a little as she approached, but he relaxed slightly after a moment but kept a very close eye on her.
"I won’t hurt you just going to take this off." She unwrapped his wound and looked at it. It had a nice scab that was clean and looked to be healing fast. "Good boy. You’re healing very fast." She grabbed a small jar and smeared some ointment over it. "That will help with the itch, just no licking it. Be warned it does not taste good."
The cooling effect of the ointment was so welcomed that the dog sighed and lowered his head over his crossed front paws. Her hands on the wounded leg helped too. He had not been this close to a female for many years. Not ever since he was forced to leave his home.
After taking care of his wound, she washed her hands then went outside to tend her garden.
He kept his eyes on her until she was out of view, then he moved out to the porch, lay down and kept watching her.
She knew he watched her as she weeded and watered her small garden. She then harvested a few herbs and veggies. She kept wondering why that team came here looking for a murderer and why they pointed out him. He was a dog. She looked over her shoulder at him. Or was he? She knew shifters existed. They had a hard life, being called freaks and hunted. She wiped her hands on her apron, pick up her things and went inside with them. She thought as shifter as blessed. Mother earth had blessed them to be part of both worlds. Man and nature. To be able to live in both was amazing. A piece of this dog hair caught her attention; she knelt and picked it up. A simple spell on it would tell her what he truly was. She put it in: her pocket to save for later.
