Chapter 4 - Familiar
Sewenna was anxious. She almost hadn’t been able to sleep, thinking about those disturbed auras she had analysed the night before. The cat had left, she hoped she would do what she had agreed to doing.
She didn’t want to tell the others about what she had found out about the girl. But Ashena, knowing her the way she did, never missed anything, she could always understand when her child was worried. Therefore, Sewenna didn’t really think it strange when her mentor came quietly into her room and sat down on the edge of her bed. The gipsy placed her delicate hand upon Sewenna’s forehead and from there started caressing her hair, softly, almost sensually.
“Will you tell me what’s upsetting your mind, my child? Come now, I know you aren’t sleeping, so you might as well open those beautiful eyes and look at me.”
Sewenna sighed and did as she was told. Ashena was still in her nightgown, a white silken dress with lace on the hem and sleeves.
“I went to town yesterday”, she said.
“I know... What did you find there?”
“Two new people moved, like Melusine told me. And I’ve seen their auras. They were... Scary auras... One was full of rage, meanness... Greed... And lust. Lots of uncontrolled, pure lust...”
“Was that what upset you?”
“No, not exactly. It was the other one, and the fact that these two people live together. The other aura was full of fear, despair, terrible pain and suffering... There was almost no self-trust... This aura is ill, so fragmented... And still there was the smallest bit of hope... A desire for friends, for comprehension and understanding, for... Rescue... But rescue from what, Ash? From who?”
“Well, dear... I do not like taking startled conclusions, but... This is a case where it seems quite obvious to me... Did you find a way to spie on them?”
“Yes. A cat.”
Sewenna told her about Misty Dawn, including the sort of movie she had shown her through their minds.
“It looks even more obvious now you’ve told me that.”
“I’m worried...”
Ashena smiled and lifted the covers, sliding under them and wrapping her arms around her child.
“I know, my love... You’re such a pure soul...”
“I don’t know if I even have one...”
Ashena chuckled.
“Come, dear, don’t you start wondering about that now. You haven’t slept what you should have.”
“I know. I couldn’t...”
“”Your feline friend will show you everything she saw today. Then you may decide what to do, all right? But until then... Let’s rest...”
She kissed her forehead and Sewenna leant her head into her chest.
Ashena started to sing softly. A strange melody, in a strange language, almost a lullaby. Her voice had a lilt to it that made it seem exotic and soothing at the same time. That made Sewenna fall asleep. It always helped her when her mentor started singing her strange gipsy songs. They were always so calming and mysterious, they seemed to sing stories of old, far away places and ages.
The cat came a little after sunset. She got in through the balcony’s door and jumped onto her friend’s bed to rouse her. There were two of them sleeping there, but she knew the light/haired one was the one she needed to wake. Softly nuzzling at her face, the cat waited while the girl softly stirred and then gasped, sitting up and stroking her head.
“You came...”, she whispered. Misty Dawn felt like smiling. She purred softly and decided that, even if this wasn’t a common human, or not a human at all, it was safe to establish a permanent mind/link with her. Of course, that involved a great deal of trust from her part and also from the girl’s, but she was sure the girl wouldn’t do anything to harm her or hurt her. And thus she decided to become Sewenna’s familiar. At first she would have to ask her if she agreed to this. It was a way for her to be sure that no harm would come to her. Because being a familiar implied that the person the animal was linked too would feel anything the animal felt and vice-versa.
All this Misty Dawn showed the girl. The girl smiled and held her close, close to her cold cold body.
“Oh, sweet... Would you really_”, the vampiress questioned, unbelieving. The cat nodded. “I’d be honoured...”
Suddenly Sewenna’s mind was invaded by an array of strange sensations, feelings and thoughts. The cat only needed her acceptance to create the mind-link, which, of course, had to be created by her and her only. Humans or whatever this one was couldn’t force an animal to become a familiar. And, on the contrary of what many human’s tales told, humans gained no power over their familiars. It was more like a sort of fellowship. Both parts would gain something, not power to enslave the other, though. But, most importantly, this mind-link would give them the ability to understand each other through words.
“Wow!”, Sewenna said, still dazzled about the things she was experiencing.
“You may marvel at it later human.”, said the cat. Sewenna got a little shocked as she heard her voice. She had expected something sensual, even drawling, not the cold, sharp, almost snappish tone she heard. “Oh, I don’t feel very sensual right now human. I bring bad news to you. And you may speak through your mind, there’s no need to say things out loud.”
“I’m sorry... This is all new to me...”
The cat sighed and settled into a more comfortable position. When she next spoke, it was in a much softer, friendlier manner.
“I understand. You are a strange human though. I never met one like you.”
“I’m not a human... At least... Not exactly...”
“Well, you certainly look like one. Smell odd, though.”
“I’m a... I’m a vampire.”
“Oh! I should have guessed. Not all human tales are false after all... However, we must save this conversation for another time. As I said, it’s bad news I bring. About the girl who smells of fear.”
