Chapter 4:

As hours turned to days and days turned to weeks, it seemed like Kaylee and Brittany were never going to talk again. Kaylee would try to talk to Brittany by calling her and show up at the door, but Brittany always ignored her. The phone would ring and Brittany would turn the ringer off. Kaylee would show up at the door and Brittany would pretend not to hear it. Brittany wanted to talk to her best friend, but was too afraid and didn’t know what to say.

One day Brittany was lying on her bed, doodling on a notepad, when the phone rang. She leaned over to see who it was. Of course it was Kaylee so she ignored the call as usual and went back to her doodling. Suddenly she heard her mother calling her downstairs to help unpack the groceries. When she got downstairs, her mother instantly hounded her.
“Was that your phone just ringing?” asked Brandi
“Yeah”
“Why didn’t you answer it?”
“Because, it was...umm…,” said Brittany putting the gallon of milk into the refrigerator.
“It was Kaylee, wasn’t it?” asked Brandi pulling the information out of her daughter.
“Mom! Why can’t you mind your own business?” screamed Brittany
“BRITTANY SPENCER! You are my business! Now tell me what happened between you and Kaylee”
“Fine,” said Brittany giving in quick, “Remember that night that you had to come pick me up really late at Kaylee’s, about two weeks ago?”
“Yeah, why? What happened that night?” asked Brandi
“Well, we started off by playing some Twister, and then we went for our mid-night swim that we were talking about. Then she asked me what I thought about Jake’s new girlfriend. I told her that I didn’t know how he could go from a ten to a two.”
“Yeah, Kaylee is very pretty…” said Brandi cutting in
“Mom, let me finish. Then she kissed me”
“That’s the problem! Come on now Brittany, you’ve been in worse situations. All you have to do is talk to her and tell her that you don’t like her like that.”
“I can’t!” said Brittany tears welling up in her eyes.
“Why not?”
“Because it wouldn’t be the truth,” screamed Brittany as the tears began to roll down her face.
She ran out of the room and up the stairs to her bedroom. She slammed the door behind her and laid on her bed. She looked over on her nightstand and saw her favorite picture of her and Kaylee at the beach from a few months before. Just then she heard a knock at her door.
“Honey, can I come in?” said Brandi on the other side of the door.
“Sure. Come in.”
“Are you okay?” asked Brandi sitting down next to her daughter on her bed.
“I don’t know mom. I…I don’t know. I guess I have to tell you something. I think…I think I like girls.” said Brittany sitting up and grabbing a tissue from the box next to the picture.
“Oh, and I’m guessing you like Kaylee, right?” Brandi said rubbing her daughters arm to comfort her.
“Yeah, and I guess when she told me that she liked me too, it just was surprise and it kinda scared me….Wait minute, your not mad. Why aren’t you mad?”
“Mad at what? Mad that you’re gay. Honey, come on. You’re my daughter and as long as you’re happy, I’m happy, okay?”
“Really?”
“Yeah, and I heard that Kaylee is going to the fairgrounds tonight for the BMX racing. You should go and talk to her.”
“Okay, can you drop me off?” asked Brittany standing up and putting on her shoes
“Sure let’s go”

They pulled into the fairground that, by that time was loaded with people and cars, but Brittany immediately spotted Kaylee car.
“Thanks mom. I’ll see you later. I’ll catch a ride with Kaylee.” said Brittany getting out of her mother’s truck
Brittany started looking for Kaylee right away but it seemed to be no use. It was National Triple Point Weekend and there people from out-a-state meaning there were more than double the people. Finally Brittany found someone she and Kaylee knew.
“Hey, have you seen Kaylee?”
“Yeah, I was just talking to her in the woods outback,” said their friend pointing to the woods.
“Okay, thanks” yelled Brittany as she ran towards the woods
About a minute later she arrived in the woods. She saw Kaylee standing against a tree. She walked up to her and gently placed her hand on Kaylee’s shoulder.
“Brittany, what are you doing here?” said Kaylee as she jumped and turned around to see Brittany.
“I came to talk to you,” said Brittany also now leaning against the tree.
“Oh, so now you feel like talking to me!” said Kaylee
“Kaylee, listen, please. I was scared. I never imagined that you would like me the way I liked you. I was afraid of telling you because I didn’t want to lose you as a friend. When you told me that you were falling for me too, it was just such a surprise it shocked me, and I needed time to think clearly about all of it. I’m sorry I’ve been ignoring you, but like I said I needed time to think. Forgive me?”
“I understand and forgive you,” said Kaylee hugging Brittany.
“Thanks,” said Brittany returning the hug
“So… now what?” asked Kaylee raising an eyebrow.
“I don’t know. How about if we take it a little bit at a time, and see where it takes us.”
“So do we just go back to normal and go from there?”
“Yeah. So what do you say? Bowling tomorrow? My treat!” offered Brittany
“Sounds perfect!” said Kaylee smiling ear to ear, “So what do we do now?”
“I don’t know. Do you want something to drink?”
“Yeah, sure.” said Kaylee walking along side Brittany to the snack bar.

“Just the water and the sprite?” asked the cashier
“Yeah,” said Brittany
“Two dollars please,” replied the cashier
As Kaylee reached into her pocket, Brittany handed the cashier two dollars and picked up the drinks. They walked over to Kaylee’s car, got in, and drove off. They reached Brittany’s house a few minutes later. Kaylee pulled in the driveway and parked the car.
“I could have paid for my own drink you know,” said Kaylee
“I know, but you better get used to it,” said Brittany grabbing Kaylee’s hand smiling, “It’s gonna happen more often!”
