Removing the Collar

Thank you to those who rate and review...

Cyn sat with Kudo on Sarah’s couch. It was large and very clean, just like her apartment. The television before her fascinated her; she had heard about televisions but had never seen one in someone’s home. Kudo was sprawled out next to her, his arms along the back of the couch, his legs stretched out as he propped his feet up on Sarah’s nice wood coffee table, Cyn struggled to keep her own space.

“Its half past five, Sarah should be here any minute.”

Cyn looked over to Kudo who stared intently at the television. He had been acting strange since they had reached the apartment. Perhaps it was something he ate, seeing as how he ate almost everything in Sarah’s fridge. The front door opening made Cyn jump as Kudo lazily stretched.

“If I had known you would be coming over today I would have stocked the kitchen a little better. I know how you eat.”

Kudo picked a bit of meat from his teeth as Sarah closed her front door and removed her shoes.

“It’s alright; you had enough to satisfy me.”

Cyn sat quietly, feeling a slight blush come to her cheeks. She was unsure of the situation, and felt almost invisible from the friendliness between the two.

“So to what do I owe the honor Kudo?”

He grinned and lean forward, resting his elbows on his knees as his golden gaze held her. At least Cyn wasn’t the only one affected by his look.

“You put this collar on me. I want you to take it off.”

Sarah’s smile vanished as she crossed her living room and turned off her television.

“The pain of placing a collar on a dog almost drives them into madness. It’s the same, if not worse to take one off.”

Kudo’s face took on a shadow as he remembered the pain of the collar being imbedded in his flesh.

“I was wild when they took me. I was always stronger than the others, which is why they placed me with Roland. I no longer wish to have this collar around my neck; I’ll do whatever it takes to remove it.”

Sarah sighed as she went to her kitchen and began to run some hot water.

“I can do this one of two ways Kudo. I can work delicately and try not to leave a scar. Or I can remove it quickly with no concern for how it looks after.”

Cyn watched Kudo’s hand rise to his collar gingerly, as though it already pained him.

“Cut it out, slice it away, rip it apart I don’t care just get it off.”

Sarah sighed as she carried a large basin of steaming water over to the table. Cyn stood, feeling unsteady at the mental pictures she was seeing of Kudo. It was strange, before she had no problem with grotesque images, but for some reason she hated the thought of seeing him sliced up.

“I’ll go to-“

Kudo’s hand caught her wrist, a grip she couldn’t escape even if she tried.

“I’m sorry Cyn. But after she does this I’ll need you here.”

Sarah looked at her quizzically.

“If she doesn’t want to be here when I do this she doesn’t have to be.”

Kudo didn’t break his gaze with Cyn as he spoke.

“She has to be here, but it’s not my place to say why.”

Cyn relaxed, realizing she couldn’t leave him when he would need her blood very soon to help heal his wounds. Kudo released her as she looked to Sarah.

“I’m a psychic. If you have to do this in order to remove the collar he’ll need me here to use my blood.”

Sarah’s eyes grew wide as she looked to Kudo for the truth; his heavy gaze told her it wasn’t a lie.

“You know I suggested that we do testing with Cerberus. I wanted to see what would happen if we bonded them with psychics. We had one test pair that lasted a week. After seven days he couldn’t resist the urge to devour her. The room was covered with her blood and he had gone mad with pain and rage. Cerberus was designed by Hades Corp to seek out and long for the taste of psychics. I had thought that perhaps the dog could benefit from the blood of the psychic and the psychic could control the blood use by the dog. I was so very wrong Kudo, and I fear for your future with this girl.”

Cyn looked to Kudo who gazed firmly at the wood floor. Anger and frustration and shame were clear on his face. She could feel her own anger rising, and she knew Kudo would say nothing to this woman who he had obvious romantic relations with.

“You know nothing. You don’t know anything about people. All you see are humans and dogs and psychics and you see all of them as little toys you can lock up in a room and record. You think one pair justifies your fears of what you’ve seen? You’re just fine with Kudo choosing another keeper, just not one who’s a psychic? I think you’re a cold jealous bitch who wants to help him but doesn’t want anyone else to be near him. It’s people like you that Hades Corp feeds on. It’s people like you that persecute psychics and Cerberus and anyone who you deem as unfit to live their lives. I hate you and everything you stand for!”

Cyn took a short breath as she realized what she had just said. Sarah looked at her in open shock as Kudo took her hand. She gazed down at him as he sat on the floor next to her, his lips lightly caressing the back of her hand as she blushed.

“Please don’t be angry with her. Sarah only wishes to protect me, just as you do, she’s always been like this towards me. I chose you, and you alone Cyn, no one else in this world has done anything for me as you did. She means no disrespect to the one who has claimed me.”

A blush even rose to Sarah’s cheeks as she fumbled with her bag of surgical tools.

“I’m sorry Cyn, you’re right; I didn’t mean to offend you or to judge Kudo.”

Cyn sat back down on the couch as her fingers went possessively to Kudo’s somewhat long dark hair.

“I’ll forgive you Sarah. So long as you never wound him again with your words. Things spoken hold more power than you know.”

The woman nodded as she prepared her material, positioning the table so that she could easily reach Kudo and her tools as well.

“I won’t lie to either of you. This won’t be painless by any means, it won’t be clean and it won’t be as fast as either of you would hope.”

Kudo bared his throat to her as Cyn braced herself on the couch, a pillow in her lap and ready to hide her face.

“Let’s just get this over with.”

Cyn had no idea how he did it. Not once did he ever make a sound. His fists were clenched hard, as was his jaw as Sarah cut under the imbedded collar and little by little exposed the metal workings. Blood covered his body as it ran down his skin from the fresh wounds. She did her best to keep the mess under control with rags and the water basin as she worked quickly and precisely to expose the collar all the way around.

“Just a little more and I’ll reach the release mechanism in the back. Just a little longer Kudo.”

His breath was short and rapid as he swallowed, the pain written clearly on his face. Tears stained Cyn’s cheeks as she watched. Despite barely knowing him, despite having just met him, she felt so close to him. They were connected by something stronger than both of them now, and the pain he felt was her pain. A soft click reached Cyn’s ears as Kudo sighed with relief. Sarah carefully pulled the now fully free collar from his flesh. He didn’t move his head as Sarah prepared her cleaning supplies.

“Where’s my master?”

Cyn moved close to him since she had been out of his peripheral vision, his hand searching out hers as she granted him that wish. Sarah cleaned away his blood and neatly dressed his wound before injecting him with pain killers.

“That should do you just fine, I’m surprised it only took me an hour to complete that, I had imagined it would be more difficult to remove from the flesh.”

He relaxed a little as the pain killers set in, his fingers never releasing hers.

“You were right, it was just as painful as when they put it on me. Thank you so much Sarah. I know you’re risking your life doing this.”

She waved off his words as she packed up her things.

“There’s a room right there you can use. You need to feed and then rest, by morning you should be as good as new.”

Kudo obeyed without question, moving to the room she had singled out. It was a small and simple guest room, one dresser one closet and one bed. Cyn wasn’t sure about the one bed, a blush rising to her cheeks as Kudo closed and locked the door behind them. She didn’t have time to prepare herself as his arms closed around her tightly, her back to his chest as his warm breath fell against the skin of her throat.

“I’m sorry Cyn.”

She closed her eyes and leaned her head back on his shoulder, her hands going up to the strong arms that trapped her.

“It’s ok; I knew this is what the cost would be. I knew when I first brought you home that the price I would pay would be my blood.”

She could feel him losing hold of himself as he tore her shirt away from her shoulder, baring an expanse of pale skin beneath his lips.

“I’m just so hungry, the pain and the blood loss has made me so hungry. What if I can’t stop?”

His hands began to trace her form, running along her sides and her stomach as she lifted a hand to his cheek.

“I wouldn’t mind you devouring me. It was the intention I had for you to begin with, I wouldn’t mind you bringing all this to an end.”

His fangs sank deep into the skin of her shoulder, his tongue working rapidly to catch all of her precious blood. He clutched at her desperately as her blood began to revive his lost strength. It was so strange, all Cyn could think about were the old stories of vampires she used to hear. Rarely are they ever told now, it’s seen as a silly ghost story for children, but she remembered. How they could turn into bats and the only way to kill them was to stab them in the heart. They lived off the blood of humans and couldn’t walk in the daylight. She began to feel lightheaded as he guided her to the bed, lying her down and positioning himself over her as he opened a fresh wound in her shoulder to drink from. She barely felt it that time. Her fingers tangled in his hair as she felt the darkness closing in on her.

“I can hear your heart slowing. I’m sorry Cyn, I’m so sorry.”

She held him close as he stopped his onslaught, resting his head against her chest.

“It’s alright, you can gobble me up.”

He gazed up at her as she began to lose consciousness. His mouth formed words, he said something to her, but for some reason she couldn’t hear what he said.
