Chapter four

Leilani felt herself pressed back against the hard wood of the table. Robin held her wrists above her head, and shoved his knee in between her legs.

“I may not own you,” he growled, “but I can make you cum.” He punctuated this with a rough grind of his knee against her thinly covered cunt. “And don’t you forget it.” Robin ran one finger down the side of her face, and Leilani wouldn’t admit (even in the future) that she leaned into it. What was wrong with her? Their personalities clashed constantly, and now, she was completely isolated from her family because of his—and her own, if she was being totally honest—stupid mistake. And, if Leilani continued being honest with herself—self-honesty was turning out to be a real bitch—she was already isolated from her family. They didn’t get along well, and other than through her mother, she didn’t really speak to any of them. The sad truth was, she was quite alone; they might not even notice that she was gone for weeks. Months.

“Why are you doing this?” She asked weakly, leaning against the table like a dead fish. “You’ve already proved your point.” Robin seemed to come to himself then, and pulled away from her like a hot poker.

“I’m sorry,” he said gruffly, and Leilani was sure that he at least meant it. “Just… don’t act like you’re leaving me.” He said, slowly, as if trying to work out exactly what he meant in his own words. He turned to the door, and walked out slowly, as though in a daze. Leilani remained on the table. What the hell had that been about?

After about five minutes, when she was sure he wasn’t coming back, Leilani moved from the table, and pulled down her ridiculously short skirt. Tottering on her heels to the door, she peeked out.

The hallway was empty. She sighed in relief, and made her way back to the room without getting lost. Robin wasn’t there either. She took off the shoes and massaged her feet a little, wondering about what would happen after he’d acted so strangely. Roughly couple of hours later, a knock sounded at the door, and she looked up from channel surfing, and saw a woman—probably no younger than her—peering in.

“I brought around your lunch, seeing as how you didn’t eat with the rest of us.” She said quietly. “I’m Freya,” she chattered, introducing herself. “Robin told me to bring this by.” She motioned with one hand to the tray she carried in the other. She sniffed it hungrily. Leilani hadn’t even known she was hungry until she’d smelled the food. Now she was starving. Freya came over, and placed the tray on the large bedside table, and headed back for the door. Leilani sighed. She was alone again. Robin was MIA, and she was too nervous to head out and explore by herself. Besides, she got the distinct impression that Robin would expressly forbid her to leave the room unless he was with her, or waiting at her destination.

The food that Freya had brought was delicious; a thick creamy soup with a large half of a turkey sandwich. It may have just been the fact that she was starving, but still, she finished every last bite. As soon as she had licked the remnants of soup off of the spoon, the door opened—It was Robin. He looked tired, and worn, as though he’d spent the day running around without rest. But when Leilani thought about it, the den did seem rather busy; that’s probably what he had been doing anyway. He looked up at her, but didn’t seem to actually see her, until she fidgeted.

“Hello,” he said distractedly, closing the door behind him.

“Where were you? You look awful.” She commented, shifting a little when he sat down on the bed. He scowled.

“Well thanks very much,” he groused, reclining against the pillows. He pulled her to his chest, suddenly, and sighed. She stiffened, and he growled in annoyance. “I’m not going to do anything, I just… I just want to stay like this.” He said roughly, flicking the light switch by the bed, before falling promptly asleep, holding her.

Leilani sighed. It was going to be a long night.

~

She didn’t even remember falling asleep when Robin roused her. It was near ten in the morning, the clock told her that much. He had a towel wrapped loosely around his waist while he rooted through the closet for a pair of pants. She swallowed dryly when he dropped the towel to change into some sweatpants. Leilani had never noticed before, but it seemed as though Robin preferred to go commando.

“Time to get up,” he said, seeming much more like his old self again. Leilani stretched on the bed, noticing that she was no longer wearing the painfully indecent clothes that he’d laid out for her the day before. Instead, she was wearing one of the overlarge t-shirts from her duffel, which had mysteriously appeared back on the couch. She bolted upright.

“You undressed me?!” she hissed, looking at the mess of her clothes he’d made on the couch. “And you went through my things!” Robin shrugged, which made her all the more upset. “You had no right—” he turned on her, suddenly, appearing beside the bed with inhuman speed, and grasping her forearms in a grip so tight she was sure he’d leave fingerprints.

“I’ve about had it up to here with your whining. I’m sick of it, you hear me? You complain about every little thing that doesn’t go your way; with no thought to how much everyone here is risking for your neck. Quiet down, little girl, or you’re gonna find out that getting out of here isn’t what you really want!” Leilani hadn’t realized that he was holding her to him until he let go of her arms, and she fell tumbling back to the bed. She was still breathing heavily when he sat back down on the bed, and nudged her gently to her feet. “Now go take a shower and get dressed.”

For once, Leilani did as he asked her to, and walked into the bathroom to take a shower. This time, she didn’t even think of taking an obscenely long bath to spite him—his words had gotten her thinking.

She had been quite ungrateful, hadn’t she? Leilani switched on the water, and stripped, stepping under the warm spray. He and everyone else were risking death and discovery at the hands of vicious hunters, and all she could do was complain. His seduction of her was something that was totally separate, something to be considered outside of the huge favor that he was doing her. He was offering her protection against an enemy that she hadn’t known existed, and all she could do was complain. Her life was different now, and that was something that she was going to have to take into account.

When she was done in the shower, Leilani wrapped a towel securely around herself, fearing a repeat of the first night. She was relieved to find that upon exiting the bathroom, Robin was sitting patiently on the bed.

“Come on, we don’t have all day.”

Perhaps not so patiently.

Leilani dressed in a pair of cut off shorts, and a long loose shirt with a semi-deep V, and a pair of flip-flops. She brushed through her hair quickly at his insistence, and was then dragged out of the room, and down the hall. Stumbling after him, she silently cursed his long powerful stride. He took her down the hall in the opposite direction she had taken to get to the meeting the day before, and pushed through a pair of double doors into a room that seemed to be as large as a movie theater, with much the same function. There were at least six couches, and four armchairs, all occupied, and the biggest television screen she’d ever seen mounted on the wall. Was this some kind of entertainment room? Looking below the television, she saw that they had nearly every game system imaginable, with countless controllers. She’d never been one for video games, but with the teenagers she’d seen the day before, it didn’t come as a surprise that there would be that many.

“Haven’t seen you two since yesterday,” Trent commented. Leilani turned her head slightly, and saw him walking in the door after them. “Got an announcement or something Robin? Everyone’s wondering when you're going to introduce your pet.” Trent jerked his thumb in her direction. “No offense,” he added as an afterthought. Leilani sighed.

“None taken.”

Then the whispers began.

“It’s Robin’s pet human!”

“Human? Her? I’ve never seen one up close before—you know how strict Alpha is…”

That in itself was mind boggling to her—though she supposed it was safer to keep the young ones here until they learned self control, as well as how to deal with humans without giving themselves away.

“What’s she doing here?”

“Is it safe?”

“—Could be a hunter—”

“Alright, that’s enough!” Robin’s voice boomed over all the whispers, and they shut up immediately. “I’m sure everybody’s heard from the rumor mill, that there’s a human in our den.” He paused, pulling her forward gently, so that she was standing directly in front of him. “And they’d be right.”

Though there was no more talking, there was still a lot of pointing. Leilani huffed. “Not only is she human, she’s also the Alpha bitch. For the moment, anyway.” This time, there was a barrage of whispers, and muffled cries of outrage—one of which was hers.

“Alpha bitch—” she whispered furiously, but was cut off by a sharp pinch to her backside.

“Later,” he hissed. “You’re to show her respect. Anyone who disobeys this will have certain…privileges removed.” Everyone swallowed nervously, and Leilani had to wonder what sort of things he could possibly take away from them. “Go get yourselves situated for the other packs—they’ll be arriving soon.” Everyone disbanded, though many of them walked by her slowly, trying to get a better look. Some of them even sniffed at her as they passed. Leilani grimaced.

Hadn’t they ever been taught proper manners?

When the room was empty, save for Trent, Robin, and herself, Trent immediately laid into Robin.

“Alpha bitch? I like her too, Robin, but Alpha bitch? Do you even know what that means to them?”

“I like her. I’m not sending her out there to die when we’ve done so much to protect her.”

Great. She was excluded from yet another conversation.

“True as that may be, you could have kept her here without making her your Alpha bitch. There are plenty of fine wolf girls here for that. Do you want your pups to be a laughing stock?”

“My pups will be just as strong as I am, and there’s nothing anyone can do to change that. She’s… she special, Trent. I want to keep her here.” As he spoke, Robin’s hands traced soft circles on the exposed skin of her neck, and Leilani had to fight to keep from leaning back into his chest, and letting him decide everything that was going on with her life. So tempting…wait…

Pups?

“Wait, hold on here!” she gasped, waving her hands to get their attention. “As soon as I got here, I’ve been kept in the dark. What’s an Alpha bitch? What’s going on here?” She broke away from Robin’s grabby hands, and faced the both of them, tapping her foot expectantly.

Trent gestured roughly toward Robin. “He can explain it far better than I can.”

Robin ran a hand through his hair and looked at her. “An Alpha bitch is the one that the Alpha chooses for his mate.”

Leilani stopped breathing.

Mate?

“Mate… like…mate?” she asked stupidly, trembling. “How long does this mate thing last?”

“About forever.” He answered softly. Leilani was confused. Where was the gruff condescending Robin that had tormented her for days? He had been replaced with this less gruff and albeit less condescending one, that was even more difficult to resist. “Don’t you understand?” he asked, stepping forward, only to have her step back. “You’re special. I would have killed you if you were anyone else, but instead… There are legends about girls like you, Leilani.” He spoke softly, and she felt her face flushing. “You’re a rare breed of human, that can deal with us. Be with us.” He took another step closer, and her fight or flight reflex flicked into flight, and she bolted from the room.

“Leave her Robin, she needs time.” She barely heard Trent and robin tussling as he fought to come after her. She was down the hall in a moment, taking random turns, but still feeling like she hadn’t gotten far enough away.

“LEILANI!” he bellowed, and she could tell that he hadn’t broken free of Trent’s monstrous grip.

She kept running. Now she was lost in this huge place, but she didn't care. She had to get away from him, and the feelings he’d inspired in her.

What if he was right? And she was “special”? What if all the years of avoiding clingy men like the plague, and hopping, unsatisfied, from relationship to relationship was a result of her obvious difference from the rest of the human race?

It was all too much to take in, and she pulled open a random door—a closet—and stepped inside, shutting it; and allowed the tears to fall.

A/N: There's no excuse for my lateness in updating...However, I was not inspired until recently to finish the chapter that I began writing. See you all soon! (I hope... XD)
