Never Told

Chapter 4: Never Told

Zack and Shawn pulled into “Jake’s Diner” their favorite place to go after school almost every single day. Jake is Shawn’s uncle and he would always give those two whatever they wanted on the house of course Zack always wanted to pay but Jake considered him family and his family would eat free.

Zack parked his car and they got out of his car and walked into the diner they waved to Jake and sat at their usual booth near the back, once they sat down their waitress already brought them their drinks, Shawn got a chocolate milkshake, and Zack got his root beer.

“You know us so well Lucy,” Shawn said with a smile

“How could I not you both would come in order the same thing and stay til close just talking if I didn’t know any better I would say you two were married,” Lucy told them with a smile and a twinkle in her bright green eyes then she walked away.

“So what’s on the schedule for this weekend?” Shawn asked.

“Let’s see Friday night is my night for movie and dinner at my place, and Saturday is your turn to pick a place to go and then Sunday is us picking a new CD or DVD or DVD collection,” Zack explained as he took a sip of his root beer.

Shawn smiled every weekend they started on Friday nights they would take turns making dinner and picking out a movie then Saturdays one of them would pick a place to go without telling the other then Sundays they would go around music stores and movie stores looking for an old or new CD, DVD, or DVD collections. It’s been that way ever since they could remember. Shawn wasn’t the greatest cook but she manages with a little help from Zack of course. Now he can cook, she’s never met any other guy that could cook like him sometimes she would even ask what he would prepare for them and he always kept it a surprise.

Zack knew what movie he would pick out for Friday and he would make Shawn’s favorite dinner, tacos. He smiled at the thought she loves tacos just as much as he loves burgers. But his mind was wondering back to the try outs today, just seeing Harrison again made his skin crawl and his blood run cold. He never told Shawn about what happened between him and the other boy when they were on the same soccer team in their eighth grade year. He didn’t have the heart and plus he knew about her little crush on him and all he wanted was to see her happy and if being with him makes her happy then she has every right to be with him. He just wishes that she would see Harrison’s true colors and that she would want to be with him instead. He never thought he would be in love with his best friend but here they are sitting at their favorite place just talking like always and he knew that something didn’t feel right but he looked passed it.

“What clubs do you have tomorrow?” Shawn asked him bring him away from his thoughts.

“Before try outs I have let’s see I think I have guitar club,” he told her as a few of their friends from school came into the diner and waved at him and he waved back. Shawn turned around and smiled waving at their friends as well.

“How about you?” he asked her as she turned back around.

“I have photography club and then I’m coming to your try outs,” she said taking a sip of her milkshake.

“Speaking of try outs you didn’t happen to see some one from our past did you?” he asked already knowing the answer.

“If you’re talking about Harrison yes I did see him when did he come back?”

“I have no idea but remember when he would play like a one man team?”

“Yeah and he would sit out for the rest of the games I remember he got so mad one time he broke one of your teammates’ arm”

Zack nodded as he remembered that day as well that was three weeks before Harrison put him in the hospital, “I have a feeling he hasn’t changed.”

“Zack just give him a chance if anything make him be second string I mean do you know who his father is?”

“Yes Shawn I do know who daddy is but you know Boone he won’t put him on the team if he hasn’t changed and this week will prove it.”

“That’s true I mean, Boone does go for team players, the team is like a family you guys work so well together,”

“Plus it’s hard for someone to be a one man team on team sport”

“Especially on a big field”

They both laughed as Lucy brought them their food, Shawn always had a salad with ranch dressing and Zack had the bacon burger with mayo on the side. They thanked Lucy and began to eat making small talk here and there. They were half way done with their meal when Zack just happened to look up and see Harrison walk in and look right at him and smirked and walked up to the counter. Zack made an attempt to not let Shawn know that he was there so he just looked back down at his food and continued eat. When he looked back up Harrison was gone and he thanked the heavens that he was. He smiled at the fact that Shawn didn’t notice anything, she was talking about their Junior Prom and that she doesn’t know who she’ll go with. This year it was the girl’s turn to ask the guys to the dance, Zack secretly hoped that Shawn would ask him.

“I could ask Luke but he’s just interested in his hair,” she said with a small laugh.

“There’s always Jes,” Zack said with a smirk.

“Zack! I can’t believe you would think that!” she said as she threw a piece of food at him.

He laughed, “Maybe he’ll sing to you again in choir practice like last time.”

Shawn glared at him, “If I go to our Junior Prom with Jes then you’re going with Anna,” she said with a smirk.

Zack narrowed his eyes at her, “You wouldn’t,” he said with a hint of warning in his voice.

“Maybe she’ll announce to the whole school just how much she loves you again,” She said with a smirk.

They both sat there eyeing each other for the longest time that they didn’t even notice Lucy come over and take their dishes away. She just smiled and shook her head, she returned a few moments later with another root beer for Zack and an ice cream sundae for both of them. They were still eyeing each other, “That’s a new record,” she said still smiling as she walked away.

“Give it up Smith you’re not going to win this one,” Zack said with a smirk.

“We’ll see about that Jackson,” she said leaning in, smirking at him.

They eyed each other for a few more moments until Shawn started to laugh. Zack threw his arms in the air and said; “Still undefeated champion Zack!” and he cupped his hands around his mouth and mimicked a crowd’s cheer. Shawn just laughed as she watched her best friend celebrate another win of their staring contest.

They ate their sundaes and after they were finished they talked about the upcoming year and how it was that time to start thinking about colleges and their futures. Zack’s future always scared him because he always saw Shawn in it and he was scared that she might not be. It was close to closing time and they both got up and said thank you and bye to Jake and Lucy. They got into his car and he drove back them back home, once they were in his drive way he turned off his car and put it in park. As always he rushed over to her side and opened the door.

“Why thank you kind sir,” she said as she got out and threw her bag over her shoulder.

“You’re welcome milady,” he said as he mockingly bowed then straightened back up and they both laughed. He slung his back pack over his shoulder and they started to over to her house. Zack would always walk her to her door even though they live next door to each other he wanted to make sure she was safe.

Once they reached her door Shawn hugged him and gave him a kiss on his cheek, “I’ll see you in the morning,” she said as they pulled apart.

“Bright and early,” he said with a smile, “Good night,” he added.

“Good night,” she said softly as she opened her door and walked in and watched Zack turn to go. Zack walked over to his house and opened his door his mom was out with her friends since it was bowling night. He closed the door behind him and went up to his room, he dropped his back pack and walked over to his desk and under it was his guitar case. He pulled it out and opened it, there he took out his acoustic guitar and a pick he said down in his chair and strummed it. He tuned it a little bit then began to play a song that he wrote, it needed some work but he knew he would get it soon.

Just then his cell phone was going off; he stopped playing and dug in his pocket until he found it. He looked on the caller ID and it said, “Coach,” wondering what Boone wanted he answered it, “Coach?” he asked.

“Zack, I know you saw him because I saw him too,” he heard Boone’s voice on the other line.

“Yes sir I did, I know he’s back because of his father,” Zack said as he stood up and put his guitar and pick back in the case.

“I don’t think he’s changed much since the last time”

“I know sir, I have a feeling he hasn’t changed at all”

“We’ll keep an eye on him to see if he has or not”

“Yes sir, we will find out in the next few days”

“Okay, get some sleep son; I’ll see you tomorrow,”

“Good night coach,” and with that he hit the end call button on his cell phone when a knock at his door came.

“Come in,” he said as he sat down at his desk just as his mom walked in and walked over to him.

“How was your first day sweetheart?” she asked with a smile.

“It was good Jon and Ashton are still dating to everyone’s surprise,” he told her with a smile.

“How can those two date they talk too much,” she said with a small laugh.

“You got me mama,” he said with a smile, then looked at her and notice that her face turned serious.

“What’s wrong mom?” he asked looking concerned.

“It’s your Cousin Rachel, her mom and dad kicked her out and her and her baby have no where to go so she’s going to be staying with us for a while,” she explained and looked at him.

All Zack could do was smile, “When do they get here?” he asked and his mom smiled and gave him a hug.

“I knew you would say something like that! They’ll be here the Sunday afternoon,” she said and gave him a kiss on his forehead, “Good night honey and thank you,” she said softly as she left his room closing the door. Zack sighed and looked out his window if there’s one secret about his cousin’s baby is that Harrison is the father.
