All For Your Melons
Idzi was first awake in the morning, as he stood, shifting ever so slightly, as to not wake his older brother. The air was moist and gems of dew resided on the leaves and the weeds. The sun shone brightly, warmly down on his face as he smiled up at the morning sky. He used a stick to draw in the dirt, and suddenly, something moving caught his eye. He looked to see a fuzzy little worm residing on the end of a fern, weighing it down.
"Wow! A caterpillar!" he exclaimed, louder than he'd meant.
Iver groaned in his sleep, his eyes opening into thin slits as he looked to his brother, and closed them again, exhausted. Moments passed before his eyes would open again, and they were immediately met with deep, curious forest green eyes, inches away from his own pale green gaze.
"Morning brother!" Idzi gave a dimpled grin, his head cocking to the side in a rather adorable manner.
Iver brought a hand to his forehead, running it back through his hair, letting out a slight grumble, "Ah, morning..." he yawned, letting his hands fall loosely into the fine silt, and brush against the moss. He pulled himself up, and stood, shaking his head.
"I found a caterpillar!" he announced again, opening his cupped hands up to reveal the fuzzy creature.
"That's interesting..." Iver responded, nodding, and looking off into the woods, "Ready to go?"
"Already? You just woke up." Idzi replied, taking a step closer to his brother.
"You're hungry, aren't you?" Iver asked, knowingly.
Idzi's stomach roared at the reminder of food, "Uh... I guess." He grinned up at his brother, innocently. "Then off we go!" and he began marching off in an direction.
Iver stifled a laugh, "Little one, it's this way!"
Idzi twirled around, "Of course! I knew that!" he laughed, and marched in the direction Iver faced.
The woods were thick but the sun was warm and beamed down on them with soft rays, as a soft breeze whistled past. The sun rose high in the sky, as noon approached, and soon they would meet civilization. The forestry began wearing thin, and Iver turned to his brother, "We made it." he remarked.
"Yay!" Idzi grinned, racing across dead tree limbs and through the forest.
"Be care-" Idzi tripped over a limb and went crashing to the ground, "Ful...." Iver sighed, racing over to his fallen brother.
"Iver!" Idzi cried, tears spilling from his eyes, "I got hurt!" His knees and palms were bleeding, and he had scratched on his legs and arms. He rubbed his eyes, looking up wide eyed at his brother.
Iver knelt over, his hands going beneath Idzi's armpits and lifting him off the ground, holding him in his arms. "C'mon kid... It's alright."
Idzi sniffled, and nodded solemnly, as Iver carried him out of the woods. They broke through and stood in a quiet secluded neighborhood, houses lining a paved street, in a quiet homely community.
"Wow..." Idzi remarked, staring in awe, squirming in Iver's arms for him to let go. Iver let him down, and shook his head, as he watched his brother, who seemed to have entirely forgotten that he'd hurt himself.
"They're just houses." Iver commented, walking on.
"But we don't have houses where we live! They are the first houses I've ever seen in my life!" Idzi exclaimed.
"You will see a lot of them..." Iver explained. Idzi just smiled as he looked around him, curiosity within his expression.
"Where are you going to get food? You said you needed money for food and we don't have any money." Idzi told his brother earnestly.
"I'll show you when we get there." Iver explained, as they walked the pavement. They didn't fit in very well; Idzi still was barefoot and no all cut up from the fall, and he wore a dark green tunic, similar to his brother's pale green one. The fashion didn't match the one of the humans, but it was what they had.
Soon the boys entered a city atmosphere, with cars rushing past and stores all around them. Idzi gaped at what he saw around him, staring wide eyed at the unfamiliar things about him. "This is so amazing!" he squealed with delight.
"If you say so... C'mon, this way." Iver told him, slipping into a grocery store. It was small and music played lightly throughout the aisles. Iver stood where no one could see him, hidden in an aisle near the door, where the produce was. He pulled back on an imaginary bow, and white energy created one, an arrow of energy in place, and in a simple motion, the arrow was released and shot forth, causing a bunch of glass bottles to rock and crash to the ground. Everyone turned at the sound of shattering glass, and Iver took the time to grab a near watermelon and bolt out the door, "Hurry up, Idzi!" he told his brother, hurriedly.
Idzi looked between the scene and his brother, and scared, he followed after. The boys ran a few blocks away from the store, and reached a park, where they both sat on a bench, as Idzi panted for air. "Why'd you do that?" he asked, breathing heavily.
"We need to eat." Iver replied.
"But aren't we supposed to keep the peace here instead of cause problems for people?" Idzi questioned.
"Yes and we can't do that on empty stomachs." Iver replied, breaking open the melon.
Idzi watched the rosy fruit with hunger, "Oh..." he replied as his brother handed him a piece of it. He nibbled on the end, and sweet juices filled his mouth with a taste he'd never experienced before. "Ahh! I love... uh.." he stumbled.
"Watermelon." Iver told him, with a slight smile.
"I love watermelon!" Idzi told him taking another bite of it.
Iver smiled, turning to his brother, as he indulged in the fruit. The sun was still high in the sky and they had no place to stay for the night, but they had some food at least, and that was a start. He hadn't been in this position in so long, but at least now he knew what to do and could do it well. He would have to find a job next, which for him, he imagined, would be hard. He knew the interview process wouldn't go over well while he still wore just a tunic, and in the eyes of others, he was strange. But, then again, still he had a plan to get new clothes as well.
