Chapter 4

I’m waiting for what seems like forever until I build up enough

courage to shift a little. I move onto my back...nothing. I roll back

over to face her...nothing.

‘Hmm, maybe she’s asleep.’ I think to myself. But not being

totally convinced, I wait about another ten minutes or so.

The next morning when I wake, I wonder if last night was just a dream.

But then I see a note in place of Mya. It reads:

“Taylor,

I went home. I didn’t want to wake you up but thanks for last night.

You’re the best.

-Mya.”

I breathe in deep were she slept.

“Mmm,” I say with a smile, “still smells like her.”

I lay in bed for a few more minutes remembering every single detail of

last night. Everything from what we studied to what we ate. Then I

remember when she took off her clothes and asked for some pajamas.

“Nice.” I say to myself with a satisfied grin on my face.

When I’m fully awake, I go take a shower and get dressed into some

comfortable clothes. As I’m rolling up my long pant legs, the phone

rings.

“Hello?” I say.

“Dude!”

“Oh, hi Kyle.” I reply knowing it’s my best friend.

“So…what happened?” He says in a questioning tone.

“Umm, I took a shower?” I state in a joking way. I know what he’s

talking about, but I don’t feel like being serious right now. I’m

in too good of a mood.

“Did Mya join you?” He says sarcastically.

This catches my attention. “NO! God, you really are a perv! Gees, she

just came over, studied, ate, and spent the night…with me…in MY

bed.” That last part puts that same smile back on my face.

“No way?! Way to go Taylor! Is she still there?”

“No, she left before I woke up but left me a note. It’s okay

though, I think I needed the alone time to reflect.” We both start

laughing.

“I’m coming over and we’re celebrating.”

“Celebrating? By doing what?” I ask wondering what my friend has

planned.

“Oh I dunno, maybe we could wash your car. Get you all wet in front

of Mya. I bet she’d like that after last night.” Kyle says with

another hint of laugher in his voice.

But that idea wasn't totally useless. I mean sure, its so cliché, but

that's what most of Kyle's ideas were.

“Ok fine. Be over here in ten minutes. I’ll get the soap and towels

ready!” Before Kyle responds, I hang up and run down stairs to fill

up a bucket with water.

Kyle is at my house a few minutes later, dressed like he’s going to

the beach.

“Nice outfit.” I say laughing. He was wearing black board shorts

with little American flags on them and a wife-beater. He wasn't the

most buff guy around, but the shirt was still cute on him.

“Thanks, you too.” He says rolling his eyes at my laughter. “So

let’s get to turning Mya on! Oh, I mean, washing you car.”

“Watch it bud.” I say looking around to make sure no one was

outside.

We start off by rinsing the car down; then lathering it up in soap.

Every couple of minutes I look behind at Mya’s house to see if maybe

she was outside. But there was no one. So me and Kyle just continued

washing and making small talk. After about fifteen minutes I saw

someone pulling up into Mya’s driveway.

“Oh no,” Kyle says looking towards her house, “it’s Brice.”

‘What?!’ I think to myself as I turn to look. It was him. He was

getting out of his car and had a bag with him. But neither Kyle nor I

could tell what was in it.

“I wonder what he’s doing.” Kyle says to me still watching as

Brice knocked on the door.

“What do you think he’s doing?” I say as sadness fills me, “If

Mya was mine, I’d be over there too.”

“Well maybe he’s not staying.” Kyle says trying to cheer me up.

But as Brice enters the house, we both knew that wasn’t happening.

“Yeah,” I say, “well I knew last night was too good to be

true.” And with that, Kyle and I finish up and head back inside.

He heads straight for the fridge and I go into my room to change

because my pants are all wet. Feeling less happy now, I just put on

shorts I usually sleep in and head back down stairs.

As I flop down on the couch, Kyle gives me a weak smile and says,

“Sorry.” I can’t help but smile back and just shrug.

*********

We sit and watch T.V. for a few hours before Kyle says he needs to

head back home. I walk him to his car and we both look over at Mya’s

house. Brice’s car was still there.

“Wow,” Kyle says unlocking his car, “bet he’s getting lucky.”

Right after he says that, he apologizes again and gives me a quick hug.

I just let him hug me and say goodbye.

When I go inside, I see that I had a missed call and a new message. I

press the play button on the machine:

“Hey Taylor its mom. Listen Uncle Rory called me at work and needs me

to come over for the weekend. Apparently he and his wife are having

problems again and she left. He needs help with the kids, so I told

him I’d stay until Monday. Sorry I won’t get to see you but I

promise I’ll make it up. Love you.”

‘Great,’ I think to myself, ‘now I’m really going to be lonely

this weekend.’ My mom worked the night shift all week long and was

hardly ever home. She slept during the day so the weekend was really

the only time I got to see her. But since my uncle was having

problems, I wouldn’t get to see her until pretty much next week; and

since I’m one of those kids who actually likes to spend time with

their parent, this kind of stuff usually upset me.

“The day just keeps getting better and better.” I say sarcastically

to myself.

It was around 5:00pm but it felt like much longer. And for some

reason, I was getting tired so I decided I might as well take a nap.

********

I got up about three hours later and realized I must have been really

tired to have slept that long.

As I woke up, I felt my stomach growl and then I remembered I hadn’t

really eaten anything all day. I go to raid the ridge and find nothing.

‘Ugh, guess I’ll just eat cereal.’ I reach for a bowl when I see

the light on the answering machine flashing. There are two new

messages and three missed calls. When I look to see who called, my

heart drops. Two of the three calls where Mya! The other was my mom. I

quickly listen to the messages. The first one was my mom saying hi and

asking what I was doing. The second one was Mya:

“Hi, this is Mya I’m calling for Taylor. I just wanted to know if I

could come over tonight and study some more. Call me on my cell

whenever you can. The number is 499-2663. Bye.”

I see that the message was made at 7:36pm and it was now 8:15pm. ‘Oh

my God,’ I think to myself, ‘I need to call her right away!’

I take a few deep breathes before I even pick up the phone. I dial the

first three numbers, and then hang up. Then I get further dialing the

whole number, but hang up. I want this to be just right. I don’t even

remember why I’m calling her.

“Oh yeah,” I remind myself, “studying. She wants to study more.”

‘But wait, study? On the weekend? Who studies on the weekend?’ Then

I get this crazy idea. ‘Maybe she just wants to see me! No, she just

saw Brice. I’m the last person on her mind right now…or am I?’

After about 10 minutes of contemplating in my head, I work up the

courage to call her. It rings twice before I hear her beautiful voice.

“Hello?”

“Um, hi. Mya?” I ask, fully knowing that it's her.

“Yes, this is Mya.”

“Uh, it’s Taylor.” I say a little crackly.

“Oh Taylor, hi! Yes, I called you. So can I come over? If not, it’s

totally fine.”

“No! I-I mean yes-yes you can come over. Uh, to study right?” At

this point I’m panicking and stuttering.

“Haha, yes to study. I know it’s weird to study on the weekend, but

I won’t be here on Sunday or Monday, and I know we have that test on

Tuesday.”

“Oh, ok. I’ll just be here. Come over whenever.” I say trying to

play it cool.

“Great, see ya in a few.”

We hang up and my back slides down the wall as a dazed smile comes

across my face. ‘Oh boy,’ I think, ‘the world is so strange

sometimes.'

But I soon remember what just went on and decide to change for the

third time today. I rush up the stairs and look for something to wear.

I pick out an extra tight navy blue sleeveless t-shirt that some

random chick once complimented me on and my jeans I wore earlier.

They’ve dried now and look pretty good with the shirt I was wearing.

I take one look in the mirror before heading downstairs.

“Okay,” I say, “just calm down and lighten up-” but before I

can finish my self motivation speech, the doorbell rings. “Crap!

She’s here!!”
