Sae felt slightly uncomfortable as the waiter pulled out his seat for him, instructing the teen to sit. He did so, carefully, thinking that if he sat down wrong then the seat would break and crumble beneath him. Bam looked right at home, letting the waiter do whatever for him, and then once they were left alone with the menu, Sae let out a breath.
“This is kinda weird, Bam.”
Bam glanced up from his menu, sapphire eyes twinkling with curiosity. “Eh? Why?”
The teen in question raised a hand to fiddle with his bow tie, trying to get some air. “I’ve never worn a tux before…”
His cousin chuckled lightly and nodded. “Ah. Well you’ll get used to it soon enough.”
Sae shuddered. “I don’t think I want to. That old man touched me in places I’d rather not mention, just to get my measurements.”
Bam laughed a bit louder at that, waving a hand. “Well they have your measurements now, I don’t think they’ll be manhandling you again.”
The teen blushed and picked up the menu, scanning it over. There were a few things in another language that he couldn’t read – French, he thought – and he glanced up towards Bam.
“What are you going to order?” Sae asked, taking a sip of the wine that the waiter had left behind.
“Hm…” Bam tapped his chin – he had just shaved, and Sae had to admit that though the man was still as handsome, he preferred the stubble – and shrugged. “I think I’m just going to go with a steak and some crab.”
Sae nodded lightly, scanning over the menu. Alfredo sounded good, he had only had it once before but he remembered he liked it.
The waiter returned and took their orders, and once they were alone again, Bam leaned forward and gestured for Sae to do the same.
“See all of these snooty bastards?” Bam said, gesturing around the room lightly with a nod of his head. Sae glanced around and nodded. “Most of them are in good favor with the Kim regime because they do them favors.”
Sae’s eyes widened, but Bam shook his head.
“We’re not in any danger, don’t worry. But if you hear someone dissing our family, just… do your best to ignore it, okay?”
The younger male licked his lips and nodded; he had just learned about his family yesterday, basically, so it wouldn’t be hard to not pay attention to who was dissing them. Though of course, his natural blood would make him itch a bit to say a word in edgewise, but he could ignore that easily enough.
They returned to their regular positions, the music of the live strings floating over them lightly. Everything was a bit much, Sae thought, but since mostly rich people were aboard he understood why everything was so fancy. A small child ran by the table and Sae smiled lightly, chuckling to himself as the mother whizzed by in hot pursuit, scolding words falling from her lips.
Dinner passed by rather simply; their food was brought to them and the cousins were discussing light topics like the cruise ship and random facts about the surrounding areas. After a bit, when most of their food was gone, Bam rested his chin on his palm and smiled serenely at Sae.
“So… how have you been?” He asked.
Sae weighed the question. It wasn’t a simple ‘how are you doing?’, it was much deeper than that. Probably referring to how Sae had grown up, what it was like, what he did. The teen felt a little bit awkward; this man had known about him for eighteen years and Sae had just met him a few days ago. He blushed a bit, and shrugged as he pushed around a few noodles with his fork.
“All right, I guess. I did average in school, was captain of the soccer team…”
“Do you miss your friends?” Bam asked, tilting his head a bit.
Sae’s blush darkened some, and he shook his head. “I didn’t really have friends. I mean, there were kids that I hung out with occasionally… but I don’t think I would call them my friends.” All they did was use him for homework answers and test prep, and to get close to some of the prettier girls in school. Sae ran a hand through his slightly unruly hair, then took a sip of wine. “I don’t really miss anyone. Except for Milk. But I’ll see her soon enough.”
When cerulean eyes glanced up into sapphire, Sae was a bit surprised to see the slight emotion of… pity, in Bam’s gaze. Sure, it was a bit odd that Sae didn’t have many friends, but it wasn’t a complete surprise. He spent his time studying and playing soccer. Besides, kids his age at school were just… idiots. He couldn’t understand why most of them did the stupid things they did; but then again, Sae had matured faster than most. And it didn’t bother him.
A hand came into contact with the one the teen had been resting on the table, and he brought his gaze back to Bam’s. The man was smiling lightly as he spoke.
“I would pity the fact that you had no one close to you. But at the same time, I’m thankful. I would hate to tear you away from the people you love…” His smile went a bit crooked, the dimple in his cheek denting slightly. “I hope that you come to appreciate your family – because we’re your friends, now.”
Sae nodded, carefully picking apart Bam’s words. Of course he appreciated his family, even if he’d just been informed about them. But… friends? To be friends with someone, time must be taken to learn random facts about each other. Likes, dislikes, personality quirks. What they like to eat, how they sleep… and they would have to spend time together. A lot of time. Daily, probably.
As he reflected, Sae came across a realization:
Bam was his first real friend.
x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x
That night, Sae found himself staring up at the ceiling of their lavish suite. He had retired to bed early, happy to finally have a comfortable place of rest, as well as excited to try out the plush bed. Of course it was heavenly; fit for a king! And huge. He and Bam wouldn’t be on top of each other while they slept; and while in the front of his mind Sae was thankful for that, the part of his body that missed Bam’s warmth by his side was fighting valiantly.
Frowning a bit, he rolled over and stared at the empty space beside him. The moonlight was filtering through their French doors just right, illuminating the comforter and the pillow that lay undisturbed. Bam hadn’t come to bed yet, claiming that he was going to inspect the ship and make sure everything was okay. Okay for what, Sae wasn’t sure, but he wasn’t about to question Bam’s actions. It just confused him further.
Biting his lower lip, Sae let one of his hands reach out to the space that should be occupied by Bam. His palm ran over the softness of the comforter, vaguely reminding him of how warm and soft Bam was in the few times that Sae had been held by him. Was it okay? To think like that? After all, Bam was his sworn protector, his servant basically, right-hand man… there to execute whatever tasks that Sae would bestow upon him, without question.
Having that sort of power over someone was a bit frightening, really. Bam would probably throw himself off of a bridge with little persuasion if Sae asked him to. Cerulean eyes closed, imagining Bam’s bright, smiling face. The slight dimple in the right cheek. The way his eyes lit up when he smiled.
Groaning, Sae pulled a pillow over his face and let out a breath. This was ridiculous. As much as Sae would like to believe he was comfortable in this new situation of living, there were still times when he just knew, just knew that he would pinch himself and wake up. But… even if that were the case, he found himself not wanting to wake up. Bam was right; Sae was now part of something bigger and better than what he had been a part of before. Now he had a reason to exist, to live. He was going to help people.
Still, to wrap his mind around the fact that Bam was so unconditionally loyal to him… it was weird. Not that Sae didn’t appreciate the man’s eagerness to help him in any case, it was just that the teen was used to people not bothering with him.
Bam was his guardian, for sure. The way he had reacted in sticky situations… how he handled that gunman, how he took care of that mysterious car that had been following them. Sae knew that the happy-go-lucky attitude of the man was a front most of the time, but to see it wiped away in a split second and replaced with the cool, calm rage that was storming beneath the surface… Sae shuddered. Bam was scary. And he indeed was glad that he was on the man’s side. The look in those sapphire eyes whenever Sae was in danger – Sae felt his face heat up and he buried his face deeper into the pillow, with another groan.
“Oi, you’re not asleep yet?”
Bam’s voice disrupted Sae’s attempts at trying to put the man far out of his mind, and the teen tossed the pillow aside and sat up just in time to see Bam shrugging off the jacket to his tux and hanging it up.
“No…” Sae shook his head, laying on his side and watching Bam as the man loosened his bow tie and untucked his shirt from his pants.
“Ah. Maybe a bath would help?” The older man asked, sending an inquisitive glance in the teen’s direction. With that sort of look, Bam was more than a cousin – he was a brother. A father, maybe.
Sae chuckled lightly with a small smile, shaking his head and stretching out his limbs. The silken pajamas that had been laid out for him were awfully comfortable to sleep in, and felt wonderful on his skin. It was odd, how he had been fretting over Bam just a few moments ago, and now he was perfectly content to be in the man’s presence. Just what effect did the Joo clan savior have on Sae…?
“Well, whatever will help you get to sleep, let me know. I’ll arrange it for you.” Bam winked and Sae felt his face darken with a blush.
Does the man realize what he says, half of the time? Sae closed his eyes when he saw Bam starting to undo the buttons on his shirt, and then rolled over. He really didn’t need to be watching the man undress, even if they were having a conversation. Well… it wasn’t really a conversation, since Sae hadn’t uttered more than monosyllabic words. Sae’s eyes drifted up to one of the skylights, looking at the starry sky that was twinkling at him playfully. He smiled lightly, then felt the bed dip with Bam’s weight.
As much as he wanted to resist, he found himself rolling over and facing the older man. Where the moon had been kissing the bedspread moments ago, the space was now occupied with an equally beautiful sight. Bam was relaxed against the pillows, hands behind his head and the blankets only up to his waist. He apparently ignored the fact that pajamas were laid out, since Sae could see the material of the man’s boxers slung low on his hips. How like the Japanese man, to not take advantage of the luxuries that were being put out for him.
“Do you need something?”
Sae blinked and locked eyes with Bam, and then blushed lightly. Ah, he was staring. And Bam always seemed to notice…
“No.” Again with the monosyllabic words. Couldn’t he think of anything better? “Why did you shave?” He found himself blurting, and then blushed brightly and averted his gaze.
Bam blinked, then rolled onto his side so he could face his younger cousin. A brow was raised, and the man lifted a hand to rub at his chin idly.
“Well… facial hair doesn’t really sit well with our disguises, does it?” He said, glancing at Sae curiously. “Do you not like it…?”
Sae shook his head quickly. Whether he meant ‘no, I don’t like it’ or ‘no, I don’t mind it’ he wasn’t sure. But he reached out with a hand and let a few digits smooth over the soft skin, his hand shaking slightly.
“I… liked your stubble. It… suited you.” He said, licking his lips as he spoke.
Bam raised both brows, now obviously intrigued by the statement. He looked like he pondered something for a second, and then he smiled as he placed one of his hands over the one that Sae had resting on his features.
“Heh. You’re the first person to say that.” Bam said, chuckling lightly. “Everyone’s always telling me to take better care of my appearance.”
Sae let a sheepish smile cover his features. “Seeing you in a tux and clean-shaven just isn’t right.”
“What’s with the coy attitude?” Bam asked, prodding Sae in the nose. “Your character is changing.”
Another blush dusted the Korean boy’s cheeks, and he huffed lightly. “I’m not even sure what my character is, in the first place.”
“Hm.~” Bam thought for a moment. “A headstrong boy that knows the difference between right and wrong, and knows where he’s going.” The older man’s smile softened. “But… a boy that doesn’t know where his heart is leading him.”
Sae stared. “Now your character is changing from idiotic to sagely?”
Bam shrugged, “It happens.”
Letting out a breath, Sae closed his eyes. “You’re right, though. I thought I knew who I was. Then you came into the picture and turned that all around for me…”
When cool fingers came into contact with his lips, Sae opened his eyes and looked at Bam, a bit confused. The fingertips danced along his lips, each touch sending a slight shock through the teen’s body.
“Smile.” Bam said softly, the command being punctuated by another swipe of his fingers. “It suits you.”
Sae felt like his heart was going to leap out of his chest and beat Bam over the head. He was torn between the feeling of being insulted, or mocked – and the feeling of floating, blissfully. No one had told him that – well, anyone that actually meant it and had sincerity behind their words. Before he could decide on what emotion he wanted to act out, or even feel, the fingers moved along his jawline and brushed through his hair lightly. A soft noise left parted lips as Sae sighed and leaned into the gentle fingers, feeling his body relax completely.
Finally he felt like he was going to have a good sleep; just before he drifted off he felt the light pressure of something being pressed to his forehead, and the comforting warmth of Bam’s body pulling him closer into an embrace.
Some odd hours later, Sae woke up, feeling more rested than he had ever before. His eyes fluttered open, the soft sunlight welcoming his arrival into the conscious world, and he yawned lightly. Feeling Bam’s weight against his back, Sae blinked his eyes a few times so that his vision would clear, and then glanced down to see Bam’s arms wrapped around him protectively from behind. He smiled lightly, his hands resting atop his guardians’, and closed his eyes as he let himself relax into the cuddle. He could feel Bam’s breath on his neck, soft and warm, moving the hairs on his nape idly. A few times he shivered; not because he was cold, but because of the sensation of Bam’s lips being so close to his neck.
This was normal, right? To be so close to someone. Like his cousin, for instance. They were each other’s only family, right? Sae trusted Bam. He had, to, right?
Right!?
“Nh…”
Sae froze as Bam let out a soft, sleepy sigh, and snuggled closer into the nape of Sae’s neck. The teen’s eyes widened, and he briefly wondered if Bam was even awake.
“Smell so nice, koi~” [1]
The teen’s brows furrowed at the foreign word attached to that sentence, and figured that Bam was still asleep. That would be the only explanation as to why the man was rambling about fish that smelled good. The older man’s hold on the teen tightened a bit, and when Sae felt the man’s lips connect with his neck, he gasped and writhed slightly.
“Don’t wiggle too much, you’ll fall out of the net..." Bam mumbled, pressing more feather-light kisses along Sae’s exposed neck.
For some stupid reason his pajama top had come unbuttoned during the night (the heat, maybe?) and left his shoulder and collarbone open for the taking. Bam’s taking. Sae stifled a moan as Bam’s teeth grazed along his skin, his tongue dancing along it idly as one of his hands slid down Sae’s side. Fingers moved beneath the silken top, coming into contact with Sae’s skin, causing goosebumps to sprout and spread over the teen’s body. The feeling was akin to a small fire dancing along his flesh, and Sae swallowed the lump that was forming in his throat.
“B-Bam…” he said, half-wanting Bam to wake up, half-wanting the man to stay asleep and continue the sensual torture.
Bam’s lips encircled Sae’s earlobe, suckling on it gently, causing Sae to let out a ragged whimper as he arched against the man’s back (why was Bam molesting a fish in his sleep!?). His body was being assaulted by sensations that he hadn’t ever experienced, and it was making his mind blur and fizz out of control. As he arched he felt Bam’s hold on him tighten, a soft moan being purred into the teen’s ear. A shudder ran down Sae’s spine, and his lips parted to let out a few pants. As this happened, Bam’s hand slid further up the teen’s torso, his fingers passing over a pert nipple, making Sae whimper once again. Saliva was gathering in his mouth, but Sae couldn’t find the right muscle control to make himself swallow; it dribbled out of the corner of his mouth and he tilted his head, just as Bam’s teeth bit lightly into the juncture of his neck and shoulder.
Sae let out a cry, and as soon as he let the sound pass his lips, the touches and caresses stopped. He lay there for a moment, trying to gather himself, pulling the covers over his body. He curled into himself, trying to make himself believe that what had just happened didn’t happen at all, maybe even feign Bam into thinking that nothing happened; a hand on his shoulder made him jump and squeal lightly, and he rolled over to face Bam, who was looking a bit confused.
“Ne, Kicks. Having a nightmare?” The man asked, and Sae just stared.
And let his jaw drop.
“WHAT THE HELL KIND OF SLEEPER ARE YOU!?” Sae screeched, sitting up and hurling a pillow into Bam’s face, making the man cower near the headboard and cover his head with his arms. So much for pretending like nothing happened...
“What!?” Bam peeked through his arms, only to duck again as a telephone went sailing past his head. “I didn’t do anything!”
“LIAR!”
A ceramic ash tray crashed into the wall above Bam’s head.
Taking the opportunity when he could, Bam leaped forward and tackled Sae, pinning the boy’s hands above his head while he straddled the lithe body to keep it from thrashing.
“What the Hell are you talking about!?” Bam demanded, and when Sae’s furious eyes met his, a few things clicked.
One: Sae was incredibly flustered.
Two: Sae’s pajamas were a bit in disarray.
Three: Bam had a bad case of morning wood.
Once those three things registered, Bam found that he couldn’t do a single thing. He couldn’t move. He couldn’t speak. Sae growled and shifted a bit, trying to throw Bam off of him – which only resulted in Bam’s body reacting in the worst way possible.
Their lips met, a bit awkwardly, and time seemed to stop. Not in the romantic way, where stars explode and flower petals fall from the sky – oh no. With this, the world stopped spinning, old ladies dropped their tea cups, a man dropped the orange he was inspecting, an unlucky child got sacrificed to a taxidermist cat-god, and oh yeah: can’t forget the fact that Bam and Sae were frozen in that position, their lips locked.
Neither of them were moving. Sae wasn’t going to make a move. Bam wasn’t, either. It even felt like the entire cruise ship itself came to a stop –
Time resumed its pace, and Bam was sent flying off of Sae with a solid kick to the stomach, as Sae clutched the blankets to his chest like a damsel in distress. Bam sat up from the rubble of a mess that the divider, some plants and statues, as well as a table had soon become with his abrupt contact with them, and waved his hands in an act of placation.
“K-Kicks! I- I didn’t mean it, I wasn’t fully awake, and you- you-“
“PERVERT!” Sae kept the blankets securely around his body and scuttled over to the bathing area, violently closing the curtains around it. The sound of the bath running met Bam’s ears, and he sighed as he slumped in his position.
“Great, Bam. You’re a genius.”
A crack resounded throughout the suite when a piece of plaster from the ceiling fell atop Bam’s head, effectively knocking the Japanese man out.
x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x
By the time afternoon rolled around, Sae had explored the better part of the ship. The decks, the other rooms, the ball rooms and the eating areas. Some of the game rooms had interested him only for a little bit, but he soon got bored. Bam was gone by the time Sae had finished bathing, and the prince felt a little bad for reacting the way he had. In all honesty the kiss wasn’t that bad… it was just an inopportune time!
Sae rested his hands on the railing of the deck he was on, and grumbled to himself. “What an idiot…”
“Who?”
The teen turned to see a pretty Caucasian girl standing next to him in a cocktail dress, her long blonde locks wavy and half pulled up. She was smiling lightly, and Sae gave her a light smile in return.
“Oh, just my friend.”
“Hm…” the girl turned around and rested her elbows on the railing, her lower back pressing against the wall lightly. “What happened?”
She spoke Korean very well for a white girl, Sae noted. He shrugged and rested his chin on a hand. “Just when I start to think he’s got all of the right intentions, he does something weird to make me second-guess myself.”
The girl turned around and leaned close to Sae’s face, prodding his cheek lightly. “Well obviously you don’t second-guess yourself too much, if you’re out here on this romantic cruise with him.”
Sae snorted, “Che. If I had my choice we’d be traveling by plane-…” he paused, finally catching onto the blonde’s words. Romantic cruise? “EH!!” His face turned cherry red, and the girl merely giggled and twirled, the dress swirling around and revealing her long legs.
“How cute~” She leaned forward and put a hand to her mouth, as if to keep what she was about to say hush-hush. “It’s easy to tell that you’re in love with him!”
“I am not!” Sae fumed at the girl, the girl who didn’t even have a name. She merely laughed and waved a hand.
“Oh, all right, all right. You’re not now~ but give it some time.” She smiled brightly and held up what looked like fortune sticks, and winked. “It’s right here in my hand.”
Sae clenched his jaw, his left eye twitching slightly. “Check your sticks again, lady. I’m not in love with an incompetent guy who can’t even stay on his own side of the bed.”
The blonde girl shrugged and put her sticks in her purse, flipping her long locks over her shoulder. “Okay, okay. I get it.” She smiled a bit crookedly. “Really though. You care about him. He’s a good friend, and you’re a good friend to him. You’ll have your doubts, but just stick with your gut instinct.”
The Korean boy closed his eyes and wiped his hands over his face, glancing out towards the sea. “Maybe you’re right…” he said softly, tapping on the railing with his fingers idly. “I might be a bit too rough on him.” He sighed, then turned and smiled. “Thank yo--…?”
The girl was gone, and he was alone out on the deck. He glanced around, a bit confused, then chuckled to himself. [2]
“What’s so funny?”
Sae turned to see Bam standing nearby, a bouquet of buttercups and lilies in his hand. He was dressed casually in jeans and a black button-down, his hair a bit mussed as usual. The teen smiled lightly and shook his head.
“Nothing.” He stepped forward and accepted the flowers when they were handed to him, then glanced up at Bam with a raised brow.
Bam blushed lightly and shuffled, rubbing the back of his head. “An apology for this morning… I-…”
His sentence was cut short when Sae placed a finger to his lips. “You don’t need to apologize. If anything, I should. I overreacted. I didn’t mean what I said.”
The older man’s eyes widened lightly, and Sae got on his tip-toes to press a kiss to the man’s cheek.
“C’mon. Let’s go get some lunch.” Sae said, starting to walk off towards the mess hall.
It took Bam a few seconds to react, but soon he was smiling and following in the teen’s wake, chuckling to himself and touching the spot where Sae had kissed him. Trust was one thing, friendship was another; but to be able to see what was done wrong and be able to right it? That was something that he was glad he didn’t have to teach Sae.
Mostly because half of the time Bam didn’t even know what was going on.
