“Got plans for the weekend, Poppa?” Weekend was only an hour away, and Delwyn was dying to go out for a beer.

“Work,” rumbled Big Poppa, without looking up from his sanding.

“Work?” He could’ve expected that, of course. “But it’s weekend… Weekend should be fun, Poppa. Relax and sleep, maybe a pub or a movie, go out fishing…”

“I missed a day because of that stupid convention,” said Poppa. “But I like fishing.”

“I would’ve loved to go there,” sighed Delwyn. “You like fishing? Cool! In a boat on the lake or fly fishing?” Wow, did he finally find something to talk about with Poppa?

“It was boring,” shrugged the big man. He sat up and cleaned his work to carefully check it for imperfections. “Do you see me in a boat, pretty boy? It would sink…”

Delwyn couldn’t help but chuckle, as the image sprang to mind. “So, fly fishing, or do you like to sit at the shore?”

“On a pier, usually. I have a house at the lake and a pier in front. I don’t like to move much. Fly fishing is tiresome.”

They were slowly getting somewhere, thought Delwyn pleased. “Nice… So Poppa, are you married?”

Big Poppa looked up, arching and eyebrow. “No.”

“Well, are you divorced then? Because—“

“No. Never got married. Engaged, once or twice, but never said ‘I do’.”

“Then why are you called Poppa, if you’re no father?”

“You jump to conclusions, pretty boy,” rumbled Poppa. Delwyn was certain he heard a smile in his voice. “You can have kids without being married. But no, I have no kids either. I don’t know how I got that name. I just can’t get rid of it either.”

“Like I can’t get rid of that ‘pretty boy’,” mumbled Delwyn, hiding behind the door he was working on. “So what is your name, Poppa?”

Poppa looked up again, easily reaching over the door. “Why? Want to scream it?”

Delwyn was truly shocked. “Poppa! Really!” He felt his face heat up, and leaned deeper down to hide it. “Idiot…”

Poppa sniggered. “Got a girlfriend, pretty boy?”

“No.” Delwyn looked around for the grinder, in the hope he could make a noise and keep Poppa from talking. Now he had the man talking, he wanted him to shut up again.

“Mmh. Boyfriend then?”

“No! Could we please talk about something else? They might hear us…” Delwyn’s face was still a deep red, and he couldn’t hide it.

“Hm… Alright. So what are your plans for the weekend, hm? A pub and a movie, all by yourself?”

“I have friends, thank you very much,” muttered Delwyn. It’s just that they were all too busy to go out with him. “I don’t know yet. I have no plans.”

“Good. Then you’ll come here, and work with me. Okay?” Poppa had the grinder at his side of the door, and started it before Delwyn could answer. He didn’t look up anymore either.

Work, at the weekend? Now that wasn’t really how Delwyn had wanted to spend his time. And being with Poppa, alone here in the garage, all day? With his suggestive questions and remarks? “Okay,” he said, inaudible over the noise. “I’ll be here…”
